06:25When Officer Mitchell arrived, he moved in to help what he thought were wounded victims

07:31Get the vest out
07:32He's a shot
07:33Despite everyone's efforts to keep Officer Mitchell alive
07:35He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital
07:37To understand the events and the suspects' background
07:40Investigators interviewed the man who was renting the apartment on Blaisdell Avenue
07:45where the initial shooting occurred.
07:47So like I said, I just wanted to ask you a couple of questions, all right?
07:50You're not under arrest or anything like that,
07:52and like you said, you're going to leave today, okay?
07:54So you're not in any trouble.
07:55I want to take you back to the shooting that happened in Minneapolis,
07:59where the officer died.
08:00You remember that one?
08:01Yes.
08:02So that was on May 30th.
08:04Yeah, and a friend of mine died, yeah.
08:06Okay, so you were friends with who?
08:09I was friends with the shooter.
08:15The shooter, Mustafa?
08:16Mustafa, yeah.
08:17Okay.
08:18So you were in the apartment at the time?
08:21Yes.
08:22Okay, can you tell me about what happened in there?
08:24And I want you to be honest, because listen, I got to talk to everybody,
08:28and I'm getting a lot of people that are just like don't want to tell me the truth,
08:32and so I feel like I got bits and pieces.
08:34I told them you would be honest, especially because your friend is dead now.
08:38Yeah.
08:39You know, it's not like your talent on anyone.
08:40I had to bury him by myself, so.
08:41Oh, wow, I'm sorry.
08:42I mean, it hurt me that the way the city made it look like.
08:51Well, he did kill a cop, let's not.
08:52He did kill a cop, but he wasn't mentally there, in my opinion.
08:56Okay.
08:57You know what I mean?
08:58He was a good guy.
08:59Okay.
09:00He stayed out of trouble for so long.
09:01Yeah.
09:02Even though he was running away from the police.
09:05Everyone makes mistakes.
09:07I wasn't aware of that until I seen it on the news.
09:11Yeah.
09:12So what happened in the apartment?
09:14That afternoon, I slept in that apartment.
09:17I think that morning, early in that morning, I came in, and he was using drugs and drinking.
09:23What kind of drugs?
09:25Cocaine, mostly.
09:27Sniffing it or smoking it?
09:28Sniffing it.
09:29Okay.
09:30Um, so I haven't seen him.
09:31Usually he drinks, like me.
09:32Yep.
09:33We drink together.
09:34But I have never seen him using drugs before that.
09:37Mm-hmm.
09:38Usually was he used to hide it from me?
09:39I don't know.
09:40You know what I mean?
09:41But that morning when I came in, he was high off drugs, drunk.
09:48And then I just slept in the living room.
09:51Got knocked out.
09:52And he woke me up around, right before the shooting.
09:58Him and one of the victims, the disabled guy.
10:05Jerry?
10:06Muhammad.
10:07Muhammad?
10:08Yeah.
10:09They were good friends as well.
10:10He was a good friend of mine.
10:12Wow.
10:13That's why I'm saying he was not mentally there.
10:15Uh-huh.
10:16Because there's no way in hell you're going to shoot your girlfriend.
10:19Your good friend, yeah.
10:21If you're mentally capable of being there.
10:24They woke me up.
10:26They asked me to buy my ex-wife's car.
10:31So we called him Jerry, the disabled guy.
10:34Jerry can go get his car out in the airport.
10:38In the airport.
10:39So as I'm trying to...
10:41My phone comes late so I was sleeping.
10:44So as I'm trying to get my phone,
10:47there was an argument about a gun.
10:52Uh-huh.
10:53Uh-huh.
10:54That was mine.
10:55No.
10:56This person gave it to me.
10:57This and that.
10:59So, um...
11:01I don't know, but I think Jerry was licensed.
11:04Jerry was what?
11:05I think he was licensed to carry.
11:07License?
11:08Oh, like he's allowed to carry a gun?
11:09Okay.
11:10It was a gun you said that was given to you?
11:12No.
11:13It was not about me.
11:14It was about this guy named I met.
11:16Uh-huh.
11:17And, uh, uh, uh, uh, Buffalo, who's a Mustafa.
11:20Uh-huh.
11:21Okay.
11:22And they're trying to, like, go back and forth.
11:25I got a gun.
11:26The gun is mine.
11:27The gun is not mine.
11:28And Jerry came in and said,
11:29Hey, this gun guy stole it from me.
11:31While I'm back, it's under my name.
11:33I'm gonna take it.
11:34And, um, that was it.
11:38Next thing I know is I hear pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.
11:43Uh, I believe you guys have seen me in the video.
11:46I was the first one out that door.
11:48Uh, I got, you know what I mean,
11:50I got shot a month before that.
11:52You know what I mean?
11:53I leave.
11:54And then I see, uh, somebody, a black guy,
12:00that was walking out the alley.
12:02I had to use his phone.
12:05And then, uh, Mustafa comes after me,
12:09looks at me and says,
12:11I love you, brother.
12:13That's it.
12:14Dead eyes.
12:16And I'm saying, like,
12:18the reason why I'm saying that I'm not incapable,
12:21is not, it was, like,
12:23who's a good guy?
12:24He played on fairness.
12:27He would fight me if I'm wrong.
12:30We've known each other for 27,000 years.
12:33You could see it turned out, like,
12:34Yeah.
12:35He was a good guy.
12:38He's just the time.
12:40Uh-huh.
12:41And the drugs that he was using,
12:43and the alcohol,
12:45and guns being around.
12:47Uh-huh.
12:48Alcohol and guns are not good.
12:50Right.
12:51Where did he get his gun from?
12:54I have no idea.
12:55Did you know him to carry your gun?
12:56No, because...
12:57Oh, yeah.
12:58Here's a...
12:59I carry a gun.
13:00I have a license.
13:01Okay.
13:02Okay.
13:03You ain't licensed.
13:04Let's clear that up.
13:05Not really good.
13:06Sorry.
13:07Let's see.
13:08When did you get this?
13:11Uh, a couple years back.
13:13You did?
13:14Yeah.
13:15And, uh, my gun license.
13:17Oh, there you are.
13:19Uh, I'm licensed.
13:20Okay.
13:21Okay.
13:22Okay.
13:23My gun got stolen.
13:24A couple more questions,
13:25just about the inside the apartment, okay?
13:28Okay.
13:29First question is,
13:30who brought that gun to the apartment?
13:31Um, this guy named Ahmed.
13:33Ahmed?
13:34Yeah.
13:35He's black.
13:36Yeah, you call him black.
13:37Yeah.
13:38What else do you know about him?
13:39He's from the old, old black.
13:41Like, we grew up together.
13:42Me and Ahmed, um, uh, uh, the victim, uh, one of the victims, uh, what's his name?
13:52Is that Osman?
13:54Osman.
13:55Um, and, uh, and, uh, Mustafa.
13:58We all grew up together.
14:00Can you, can you tell me who, I want you just to name off who was all in the apartment when
14:04this happened?
14:05When I woke up, um, the victim, um, was named Omar.
14:11What was it?
14:12Osman?
14:13Osman.
14:14Yeah, Osman.
14:15Okay.
14:16Um.
14:17What'd you say?
14:18A buffalo.
14:19Yup.
14:20Okay.
14:21It was Mustafa.
14:22Yup.
14:23Um, um, uh, Jerry, who's, uh, Muhammad.
14:27Muhammad.
14:28Uh-huh.
14:29And, um, a bunch of girls.
14:34All in the living room?
14:36No, all in the, uh, they were in the room.
14:38They were in the room.
14:39And, uh, I was still in the living room.
14:42So, the guys was in the living room.
14:45Okay.
14:46Yeah.
14:47Alright.
14:48Do you remember being in there?
14:49It was just you, Jerry, Buffalo, and husband?
14:51Yeah.
14:52Cause, Jerry and Buffalo woke me up, telling me, hey, it's getting late.
14:56Uh, you know, it was supposed to be your sister.
14:58And I was like, come on, let me sleep.
15:01He's like, no, it's a lot of luck.
15:03And then, the black guy came in, and I...
15:05And then black came.
15:06So, black's another one that was there, obviously, cause he brought the gun, right?
15:10Yeah.
15:11And that's...
15:14Everything else.
15:15What happened to the gun after all this went down?
15:17I have no idea.
15:18You don't know who left with it or anything like that?
15:20As soon as I could, yeah.
15:21But you haven't heard on the streets, like, hey, I need to get rid of this or anything like that?
15:26No, I believe that black still has it.
15:28I think he does.
15:29Uh, because, um, I didn't see him come out before me or after me.
15:36And, um, I don't know.
15:38Gotcha.
15:39When this argument started over the gun, was there a lot of conversation or was it...
15:42Yeah, it was loud.
15:43I tried to intervene, but it was like...
15:46Were they all speaking English?
15:48Yeah, Somali English and everything that they did.
15:50What was, what was being said?
15:52Uh, Jerry was fighting over the gun that was stolen from him.
15:56Buffalo was saying that the gun was bought from, um, some guy that, if I remember right,
16:07that he wasn't there.
16:09And, um, black was saying, I got it from him.
16:13That the victim owned Osmond.
16:15And I was almost trying to be like, I've never seen him before.
16:18Like, I've never entered that type of thing.
16:21So it was just like an argument between these...
16:23Between these guys and I, and I'm in the middle trying to figure out who's what they just woke up.
16:29You know what I mean?
16:30Mm-hmm.
16:31And...
16:32I don't know.
16:33It just got out of hand in seconds.
16:36One minute they always see me, I've had to laugh at each other.
16:39The next minute it's just...
16:41Boom.
16:42Yeah.
16:43As I remember, I was on the phone, I tried to get in the room.
16:48I didn't know all those girls were there.
16:50And then they came in the room, I came back.
16:53I'm looking at the, uh, there's a little couch thingy, I think.
16:56I don't know if you guys saw that.
16:58Mm-hmm.
16:59The little seat thingy.
17:00Uh...
17:01In the apartment?
17:02In the apartment, at the back wall.
17:04Yeah.
17:05Okay.
17:06It's like a thin thing.
17:09Okay.
17:10Um, looking behind there, and like, I see the argument, they're in the kitchen.
17:14Uh, they're in the front door.
17:16And all of a sudden, pop, pop.
17:19Like, pop, pop.
17:21And I'm just posing there, like, what the hell's going on.
17:25Mm-hmm.
17:26Do you know a guy named Gajo?
17:28Yeah.
17:29Was Gajo there?
17:30No, but he was supposed to be there.
17:32Okay.
17:33Are you sure?
17:34I don't know if he was there, but I know he was supposed to be there,
17:37because I know he was supposed to come up that day.
17:39Okay.
17:40Does Gajo normally have, like, crazy hair kind of?
17:43Yeah, like, more like Mike.
17:44Yeah, more like, like, if you took that out, it'd be kind of all over?
17:47Yeah.
17:48Yeah.
17:49All right.
17:50Okay.
17:51Yeah, he was there.
17:52Uh, he wasn't there, to my knowledge, but he was supposed to be there.
17:56He was supposed to be there?
17:57Yeah.
17:58Okay.
17:59Why was he supposed to be there?
18:00Because he's coming home from jail, and he was supposed to be there.
18:03Gotcha.
18:04So when you crashed, he didn't see him there, is what you're saying?
18:06No, because, you know, when I crashed, it was 5 in the morning.
18:09When the things happened, it was around 5, 4 o'clock, 5 a.m.
18:14So you almost slept for 12 hours?
18:16I was slept for 12 hours, and I wanted to see him for more, because I used to be for days.
18:20Gotcha.
18:21Yeah.
18:22Okay.
18:23Do you know Gajo to carry a gun?
18:25Yes and no.
18:26Okay.
18:27Is he in a gang?
18:28Uh, I can't say for sure.
18:31Okay.
18:32Because he's a young kid.
18:33Uh, I don't know.
18:34Yeah, he is.
18:35He's 19 years old.
18:36Oh.
18:37So I don't know if I'm going to let him in the gang yet, but, uh, I don't know.
18:42All right.
18:43Well, if you see him and you're hanging out there, can you hit one?
18:46Can you give us a shout and just text him or something?
18:48You got my number.
18:49You had it from me.
18:50Yeah, just let us know, like, hey, uh, Lala or Habik's here.
18:52And again, I, you know, you can tell him whatever you want, but I'm being truthful with you.
18:56We just want to know the story and, and no one's under arrest.
19:00No one else.
19:01We've got to talk to every single person that was there.
19:03Right.
19:04You saw all the pictures there.
19:05Every person in the pictures.
19:06We've got to just talk to them.
