00:00Hello my friends, welcome to The Electric Viking.
00:03Fantastic to have you here.
00:04Now there is a very interesting car coming to Europe and to Australia and to the UK.
00:11But I'm not sure about the United States.
00:15Unfortunately, you guys may miss out for a little while.
00:20And this car is most definitely coming.
00:22This is not a false alarm.
00:24It's already being sold in China by Aura.
00:27Aura, parent company of Aura, is Great Wall Motors.
00:30Now GWM, as they've rebranded themselves, currently sell cars outside of China.
00:38So this is not new to them.
00:39They've been selling cars in Australia now for quite some time, in Europe as well, and
00:43in the UK.
00:45Now they are actually China's biggest supplier of SUVs and utility vehicles, or pickup trucks,
00:55Utes, as we call them here in Australia.
00:58Now Aura is their sub-brand, their EV brand, which was launched in 2018 in China.
01:05And within the last 48 hours, Aura and Great Wall Motors have officially announced that their
01:11vehicles are coming to Australia and to Europe and to the UK in 2022.
01:17Possibly even some of them in 2021.
01:23Now I've got full details on the vehicles that are coming.
01:28But this video, I'm going to focus on the car that was shown recently called the Aura Good
01:36Cat, which is kind of a mid-small-sized SUV.
01:42At least it has the dimensions of one anyway, even though it doesn't really look like an SUV.
01:45Now in China, it's called the Aura Haomao, which means good cat.
01:51And it's the fourth mass-produced model under Great Wall Motors, dedicated electric vehicle
01:56brand Aura.
01:57Now the Haomao was actually released to the Chinese market on the 24th of November, and
02:03it's available in five different trim levels.
02:06But there's really three significant trim levels, and I'll get to those in a minute.
02:10Now prices range from around about $15,700 US dollars, all the way up to a massive $21,800
02:21US dollars.
02:22I know, expensive isn't it?
02:24Well, really, let's be honest, it's an absolute bargain.
02:27Now the most expensive model is the Good Cat GT, which comes with a more powerful electric
02:33motor, and I'll talk about that in a minute.
02:34Now, this vehicle is obviously super retro looking, and looks a little bit like a Porsche
02:42911.
02:43Well, maybe not, but the headlights look like those on a Porsche 911, and for good reason.
02:49The vehicle was actually designed by ex-Porsche designer, Emanuel Derta.
02:54Now it just made its official premiere for Europe at the 2021 IAA Motor Show in Munich,
03:04and that's where we learned more of the details for the European and Australian markets.
03:09Sorry, I've left out New Zealand.
03:11I believe it is going to New Zealand as well.
03:13Good news for you New Zealand buyers.
03:14Now, apparently, the Good Cat has now been renamed to just the Cat, and will come standard
03:22with a 360 degree camera and other tech goodies, but we don't know exactly what's going to be
03:31standard equipment.
03:32We don't know the exact specifications yet, but we do know a bit about the battery technology,
03:38which has taken me a freaking eternity to figure out, and the specifications of the motors,
03:44etc.
03:45So, the standard model comes with a single front electric powertrain that makes 143 horsepower,
03:53107 kilowatt, and it has 210 newton meters of torque, which is about 155 pound feet.
04:00Power is sent to the front wheels only, so it's not an all-wheel drive SUV, unfortunately.
04:06Now, claimed curb weight for the base model is 1,500 kilograms.
04:10The higher spec model, which comes with a longer range battery, is around about 1,600 kilograms.
04:18So, it's not a very heavy car.
04:19It's actually quite light.
04:21Top speed is 93 miles an hour, and 150 kilometers per hour, and there's two battery capacities
04:27you can choose from.
04:27The base model comes with a 48 kilowatt-hour battery, and the higher range model comes
04:33with a 59 kilowatt-hour battery.
04:36This allows a claimed range of 249 miles, or 400 kilometers, for the base model, and 311
04:43miles, or 500 kilometers, for the high-spec model.
04:46Now, those ranges, obviously, are not realistic.
04:48Their real-world range for these vehicles would probably be about 100 kilometers less.
04:52So, you're looking at 300 kilometers and 400 kilometers of range, respectively.
04:56Still really, really good, though, for that price, isn't it?
04:59Now, the base model accelerates from 0 to 50 kilometers an hour in 3.8 seconds, but I haven't
05:06talked about the GT yet.
05:07I'll get to that in a second.
05:08Fast charging time is 30 to 80 percent battery capacity in 30 minutes, so it's not a particularly
05:14fast-charging EV.
05:16It doesn't have super-fast-charging tech.
05:18I would guess that that's probably maybe 80 kilowatt-hour fast-charging.
05:22Brakes, front ventilator discs, and rear are disc brakes, so no drum brakes on this one.
05:28Now, one thing we know is that all good cats, or all of the cat or a cats, will come with
05:35a mild autonomous driving aid called Aura Pilot Driving, which includes adaptive cruise control,
05:41automated throttle control, and intelligent curve assist.
05:43So, the three main models that we know about are the base model, which costs 104,000 RMB in
05:51China, 104,000 yen, which is about 21,900 Australian dollars, or 16,000 US dollars, around about the
06:00same amount in euros, about 16,000 euros, right?
06:03I'm going to guess that's going to come out in Europe for maybe 20,000 euro, and probably
06:09around about, from reports that we've heard here in Australian media, about 34,000 Australian
06:15dollars.
06:16The longer-range battery model costs a bit more at 20,000 US dollars, or about 27,000 Australian
06:24dollars.
06:25This is in China.
06:25China prices, by the way, are about 19,000 euros.
06:30And the GT model, which I haven't talked about yet, is the highest spec model, it costs the
06:35most, costs 144,000 yen in China, which is $30,000 in Australia, or 22,000 US dollars.
06:42That's the GT model.
06:43The GT model comes with a 126 kilowatt electric motor, so it has about 20 kilowatts more power.
06:50It's boosting the horsepower from 143 to 171, and torque increases from 210 newton meters
06:59to 250 newton meters.
07:01Now, the GT model can accelerate to 100 kilometers an hour in 6.9 seconds, which is pretty good.
07:07And maximum speed is 160 kilometers an hour, whereas for the base model and the long-range
07:12model, maximum speed is 150 kilometers an hour.
07:16Now, what about the dimensions?
07:17How big is it?
07:18It's 4.23 meters long, or 166.7 inches.
07:23Width is 1.8 meters, or 71.8 inches.
07:27Height is 1.6 meters, 62.8 inches, and the wheelbase is 2.65 meters, and 104 inches.
07:36Now, obviously, electric vehicles, one of the big advantages is interior packaging is always
07:41better than their ICE counterparts, so expect the interior to be bigger than it sounds like.
07:46Now, one thing I just did pick up from the European Munich Motor Show is that Aura are expecting
07:52to deliver this vehicle in Europe and Australia before the end of this year, where originally
07:57they were saying they'll be delivered in 2022.
07:59Now, they're trying to aim for the end of 2021, which is great news.
08:03But, but, but, but, but, but, there is a big but here.
08:05There's some changes to the battery chemistry going on, which are a little bit confusing.
08:12I've done a lot of research to try to find out what those are.
08:16Now, and this is the conclusion.
08:19Now, previously, the Aura GoodCat had an LFP battery in the standard range version, the
08:26401 kilometer version, but the long range 501 kilometer version was only available with
08:31an NCM battery.
08:33Now, recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in China released documents
08:39showing us that an LFP battery, or lithium ion phosphate battery, will also be available
08:44in the long range version.
08:45Now, I personally think this is a good thing.
08:47I'd prefer an LFP battery if it can give you the same range.
08:52Now, the new LFP battery is made with cells from S-Vault.
08:56So, S-Vault is the battery supplier for Aura.
08:59This was hard to actually find out because no one was talking about this.
09:03It took me a while to find out who the battery supplier was.
09:05So, they are called S-Vault, the Chinese battery company.
09:09The long range battery version isn't available to order right now in China using lithium.
09:14lithium ion phosphate batteries, but apparently it will be soon.
09:17Now, the version, the long range version currently with the NCM batteries in China has a starting
09:22price after subsidies of 134,000 yen, 17,500 euros.
09:29Now, there's no word yet on whether the NCM battery will remain as an option in the long
09:34range version or if it will be completely replaced by LFP to cut costs.
09:38I suspect it will be replaced by the LFP version.
09:41So, what is the energy density of the lithium ion phosphate batteries in this car?
09:47Apparently, it is 143.4 watts per kilo, which people say online means it's more energy dense
09:55than some NCM chemistry cells that are currently powering electric cars.
10:00Now, that's probably using older technology, definitely using older technology.
10:05Here's an example, though.
10:06The battery pack of the Peugeot E208 is made with NCM battery cells from CATL.
10:12They have an energy density of 140 watts per kilo.
10:15Now, the standard range battery is actually made, not made by S-Volt, it's made by Guaxan,
10:21which are a Chinese electric battery company.
10:25And the longer range version is made by S-Volt, also a Chinese battery company.
10:31I don't know why they're using two different battery supplies for the different models.
10:35Seems quite confusing to me.
10:37But anyway, now, more importantly, right?
10:40More importantly, if you don't like this car, well, that's fine.
10:44Now, Aura are actually bringing out, well, Great Wall Motors are bringing out three different
10:49Aura EVs to Europe and Australia and the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and who knows where
10:55else?
10:55I imagine as many countries as they can possibly get to because, honestly, these cars actually
11:00are not selling that well in China.
11:02So why not hit other markets, right?
11:04The company are bringing three EVs.
11:06Obviously, we've gone over the first one, which is the Aura GoodCat.
11:08The second one of those EVs they're bringing in is called the Aura Lightning Cat, which is
11:14kind of a sedan-looking version of the GoodCat.
11:18I think it looks way better, actually, than the GoodCat.
11:22I much prefer the Lightning Cat over the GoodCat.
11:26Tell me what you think in the comments section below.
11:28Which of these would you choose?
11:29Now, the third EV that we're selling is called the Aura Punk Cat, which bears a very strong
11:34resemblance to the classic Volkswagen Beetle, but I think it looks much better than the
11:38original.
11:39Now, there's also word that there's a potential fourth model coming called the Aura Sherry
11:44Cat, which is more of a traditional-looking mid-sized SUV, which comes with either a 61-kilowatt-hour
11:51battery pack or an 80-kilowatt-hour battery pack.
11:54Now, the 80-kilowatt-hour battery pack is a very interesting pack.
11:58It comes with a new lithium-ion-type battery, which removes cobalt.
12:03So it's kind of an NCA chemistry battery without the cobalt.
12:07And apparently, it only reduces battery efficiency or energy density by around about 5%.
12:12Now, the Sherry Cat uses a 150-kilowatt and 340-newton-meter electric motor with the option
12:20of either front or all-wheel drive.
12:23So I think this car could be a bigger hit.
12:25Also has much more traditional styling for Western buyers who are probably used to styling
12:30that doesn't stand out so much as the other EVs.
12:33And as for the Sherry Cat, well, the Chinese media has actually reported that the Sherry Cat
12:38is definitely headed for Australian shorts.
12:40So therefore, if it's headed here, good chance it's headed to Europe and New Zealand and
12:45the UK as well.
12:46Now, I've spoken about four different EVs coming to the rest of the world.
12:52Well, not the rest of the world.
12:52Sorry, guys, in the United States and Canada.
12:55Not to you guys, unfortunately.
12:56But to much of the world.
12:58This is exciting news, right?
13:00We're going to have so many more choices within the next one to two years.
13:04And so many more affordable choices.
13:06And that's what matters the most.
13:07If Hyundai bring out an IONIQ EV and they sell it here in Australia for $80,000, unfortunately,
13:13most people can't afford it.
13:14I absolutely love the IONIQ 5, but it's just not in my budget, really.
13:18$80,000 is plus luxury tax costs, plus on-road costs.
13:23You're looking at something that's going to cost you about $95,000.
13:25So, that's the great news here.
13:30Company like Aura coming to the market, to Australia, to Europe, to the UK, to New Zealand,
13:36selling four different models at prices where you can actually afford them.
13:41If you've got any questions, stick them in the comment section below, and I'll try to
13:44get to them if I can.
13:45Other than that, though, guys and girls, I hope you've enjoyed the video.
13:48I hope you'll learn something about what's happening in the market about some Chinese
13:52EVs that are coming to you very soon.
13:55Thanks for watching the video.
13:56I look forward to seeing you on the next one.
13:59Bye-bye.
