Liverpool can't cope_ Carra, Keane _ Redknapp debate why Liverpool are struggling right now
Transcript
00:00To sum up on a slot saying that he would have been happy if he knew how many chances Liverpool
00:04would create in the match and actually Cody Gakpo had a higher XG than Manchester United as a team
00:08in that game hit the post three times but that they have to finish them better but also that
00:14defensively of the chances they did give up they conceded a couple of goals including one
00:17from a set piece or that from a corner that led to the led to the goal and then he said we just
00:23can't afford to be to be doing that. Yeah I think it was a really good interview that because
00:28when you lose a game of this magnitude people get emotional you know even pundits say you know
00:33supporters and it probably is a good time for the manager to be measured 40 feet in a row. He's
00:39explaining the game really well if Liverpool put the majority of the chances of it he'd probably
00:42win the game but the way the Premier League is style-wise this season for everybody set pieces
00:50is a big part of the game. Everybody's taken long throws this season you know set pieces
00:54glory look at Arsenal the success they've had as well and Liverpool just can't seem to cope at
00:59their own so we keep talking about new signs and integrating them in terms of actually the football
01:03Liverpool are playing but the new signs that Liverpool have brought in has it affected them
01:08set piece-wise as well you know the full-backs are quite small you know there's no sort of great
01:13you know physical presence in there even if you play Avert in midfield and McAllister as well
01:19as well you've got to think set piece-wise as well is the team big enough and maybe this is
01:23here in Liverpool now not just in terms of actually you know playing the football and getting players
01:27on the ball but it looks like they're not coping at all well with set pieces they can see last minute
01:32at Crystal Palace from a long throw as well another corner at Crystal Palace as well so
01:38so yeah they're struggling I think with the style of the whole Premier League right now.
01:44You mentioned the fact that it's a time for on a slot to be to be measured after four defeats in a row
01:49but if you look at performances across the the whole season you were saying in the in the first game
01:55of the season against Bournemouth that there were worrying signs defensively for Liverpool from from
02:00open play have they gone any way to fixing those do they still look as vulnerable in open players as
02:05you thought they were on that that first day? Oh yeah yeah it hasn't changed and I think a few weeks
02:11so I looked about Liverpool maybe going back to having Sir Bosley in the midfield and maybe
02:15Vert coming out the team because he's more of an offensive number 10 than Sir Bosley but Sir Bosley's
02:20played in that position in the last two games you know away at Chelsea here against Manchester United
02:25today and Liverpool are still conceding goals and conceding big chances you know you think of the
02:29chance Fernandes had in that first half as well Manchester United should be 2-0 up in that situation so
02:35there's as we said before the game I don't think it's one glare and problem there's lots of things
02:40new signings not up to speed but some of Liverpool's great players last season are nowhere playing
02:46nowhere near the level that they are and you know just making sort of errors and you talk about
02:50Canarte he was brilliant today I thought Canarte had a really great game but then Van Dijk's nowhere
02:55near himself I mean he has a really poor game as well so it's just it it's not quite happening for
03:02Liverpool right now and I think I've just mentioned on the podcast actually I think it might be
03:07available to download all your usual podcast places exactly but I think when the champions or a team
03:14if you think of last season on such a long run undefeated from the Nottingham Forest game I think
03:19maybe to the Fulham game later in the season almost feel invincible and then this season as soon as
03:24someone beats them this run goes on in four games I remember Manchester City last season had that run
03:31where you couldn't believe this was Manchester City you feel a little bit like that with Liverpool and I
03:34go back to a game I played in here 25 years ago or something where the invincible team with Arsenal
03:41the following season once they'd lost one game everyone thought oh maybe you can beat them and
03:46they actually went on a run of sort of losing four or five games so it's just one of those things that
03:51they've looked at it in right now and you just as the manager said you know they've got to get out
03:55a bit quick but it's probably we're not going to see the best of Liverpool I would say till the second
03:59half of the season that's why I think a draw today I know we praise enough for gambling and winning
04:04getting late goals but on the back of three defeats you're home to United and it's 1-1 don't shy away
04:10from taking a point as well I think just to stop the rot and not three games for Liverpool is a lot
04:14but there's a bit of arrogance of that which is nothing wrong with that when you're a champion you think
04:18there's a bit of a swagger but also smell the game and go this there's danger here that's what isn't
04:23there's not no taking a point either it's not the end of the world Jamie just picking up on on what
04:28Roy was saying about Liverpool coming back this season was saying earlier about you know coming
04:32back as champions and finding it harder they've always been title challengers they've always had
04:37teams coming in here maybe sitting back against them but to Jamie's point do you think that they
04:41they can scent blood a bit more this season they feel that it's possible to get something yeah I think a
04:46lot of clubs a lot of teams will look at what magic night did today they never once played out from
04:50the back from a goal kick you see lesser much lesser teams that aren't comfortable on the ball trying to
04:54do that inviting pressure losing the goal I think they had a really good game plan I think and they
04:59showed that against Liverpool today in terms of you know trying to maybe you know a point isn't the
05:03worst result in the world it wouldn't have been if you look at what Arsenal did when they got that
05:07point against Manchester City we're all talking about it after they were celebrating how happy they were
05:11but then they go on a great run after that they got a Newcastle win and we all go yeah actually at the time
05:15it didn't feel like a good point but how good does it feel now so Liverpool have just got to find some
05:20rhythm again and everyone's going to be asking questions about his decisions the players that
05:23are coming that's inevitable the next week or so people are talking about you know how's he going
05:27to fit Verts in the team how's he going to fit Isak Eketike into the team what does he do about the
05:31right back situation how's the left back looking there's going to be lots of question marks but you've
05:36just got to be a little bit patient he's very measured the manager he doesn't get too involved doesn't get
05:40too high when they do well doesn't get too low when they don't and I think it might need a bit of that
05:44for now because it's going to be a little bit of a struggle it's going to be a difficult time
05:47because they've got it they've got some tough games we're not we're writing it down earlier on
05:50I've got Brentford away Villa at home and then the Manchester City away so they're not they're
05:54games that you're looking at thinking they're not going to be easy they're going to be challenged
05:57next week Champions League games Carabao Cup game against Crystal Palace in amongst all of that
06:02we talk about set pieces Jamie's mentioned how difficult they are now and how big they've got the
06:05ultimate test next week at Brentford away so they're the challenges that they've got to have so
06:10they've got to make sure they deal with them with all the players they're brought in I'm just trying to
06:13imagine or the manager and the staff at the training ground they're looking at you can give a lot of
06:17options really and sometimes that can be a problem also when you've got brilliant options on the bench
06:21you see him chopping and changing and he's offensive and I give it a thumbs up for gambling but again
06:26there's certain games and you have it the old saying in football if you can't win it don't lose it
06:30they've got to get back to that mindset of not giving up daft goals like they have done that's the point
06:34he made at the end when you want anyone when you sort of won the title you obviously lucky when it loads of
06:39times you then the second you would you have to do it again is it like you've got is it hard to get
06:44yourself going this is obviously different challenge and obviously people look at you but then you've
06:48obviously got a bit of a confidence about you that we've done it and we can hopefully do it again and
06:52you've got that kind of that winning culture and that vibe going on and again people would have
06:55there people all thought about the team I was involved in going you always felt you'd go to the
06:59very end and you always felt if anyone was going to win it was United and they'd be gambling but it was
07:03plenty of games or we'd be trying to win again but also we'd be looking going everyone thinks we're going to go for it here
07:07but we will take a draw there's certain games like I think you always have to smell it in the air I
07:12think Liverpool should have smelled that today and I know it's hard when you're at home and the fans
07:16are pushing it's on the television everyone's building the game up but when it's 1-1 and you've
07:20lost three in a row there's nothing wrong with just bringing it back to base is going listen what
07:24lads we'd love to win we've got enough attacking players on the pitch but defensively you've got
07:28experienced two centre-halves going yeah listen we've got one or two players who can try and win it
07:32but make sure we don't lose it take over though from those seasons where City were pushing for a
07:39hundred points where Liverpool ran them close on 90 odd points here in more than one yeah they're
07:43obviously had good with him last year particularly and but when when it felt that a draw was drop
07:47points when it was it when you almost had to have a perfect yeah obviously to it to entitled it is
07:52about winning football matches but I'm just on about if there's five or ten minutes ago and you're up
07:55against teams like United today especially their attacking players you just Kelly you smell it just feel in the
08:00air going I know everyone wants to I was a midfielder we'd have lads going forward but I'd still be going
08:04yeah let's Giggs you go for it but don't worry I'm sitting back in I'm going to sit in front of my two
08:09centre-halves and we're still going to make sure we defend crosses or whatever because unless you do
08:13that unless you do them basics right you're not going to win football matches so I just felt today
08:18Liverpool it was a time for them to go with five or ten minutes to go we talked about that throwing
08:23and even that was a symbol of like what are you doing just throw it down the line and we get up the pitch
08:27maybe a bit of arrogance and a bit of you can be too confident and United are looking going I tell you
08:32what happens when you're thinking that United will be sniffing it and going I think there's a chance here
08:37that we can win this game and United haven't won here for ten years so you're giving them belief
08:41you have to take that belief away from them and again go in that dressing room afterwards and be annoyed
08:45with the draw go in and go lads we need to do better but it's a draw it's something instead of going
08:49and going hey we can't be giving up goals like that we said about their body language when it comes back in
08:54from Bruno players four or five more kind of looking to run up the pitch if they're playing
08:58a home to a a championship team Southampton came out two or three weeks on they've got a few few
09:03chances they had a little bit of joy I know they won't again but it's still Man United there and
09:06they still have very good attacking players and all of a sudden you go it's going out to Bruno and
09:10you're running open but Bruno puts it in Maguire's on the back post just like some of the Palace
09:14players were on the back post just like Chelsea were on the back post when they're breaking going
09:17we'll sniff a chance here that's what you just said there you should probably looked at it a few
09:23times you know the goal and the you know the the team defending the corner but I go back to my worry
09:28about Liverpool at the start of the season it's not so much all the attacking players but if the
09:32mindset of everyone is always we're going to be attacking we've got this attack and play we're
09:35going to be on the ball people are always thinking about what happens when they're on the ball and
09:39almost the defending bit becomes a bit like do I have to do I have to do that do I have to track him back
09:44do I have to go and win a big header I want to get on the ball I want to play I want to get we've got
09:47midfield players who all want to get on the ball so I actually think sometimes Liverpool now there's
09:51almost that a mindset of not actually doing the dirty work and you're talking about today you know
09:56getting that point that was definitely more the case in the two away games at Chelsea Crystal Palace
10:01Crystal Palace batted Liverpool they got a goal late on Liverpool that's like get out of there
10:05with your point is a tough place to go could have been three nil down a half time greater point a great
10:10point away Chelsea got beat there last season you got back to 1-1
10:14you don't get beat that that's the thing that that frustrates me in terms of the experience on
10:19the pitch and the players they have on the pitch you've won not just last season but one numerous
10:23trophies over the last fight and defend and we talk about teams that win titles it's gone the
10:28foundations obviously need a top goalkeeper be rock solid at the back we look what Arsenal do now
10:32but Liverpool looking as a gone do we need to do that bit because we've got so many options we've got
10:36brilliant attack players they're always a goal tread again it's good it could score four or five today but
10:41they're getting cut out a little bit almost become a bit more humble and don't forget what you got that a
10:45success that was been maybe rock solid at the back you're going to give up one or two chances but I
10:50think teams know we're playing Liverpool and now it's four games and going that's right I think that
10:55the word the problem is though Kelly when you actually look at the team they ended up with they end up with
10:59three defensive minded players Kerkhez Kanate and Virgil van Dijk everyone else on that pitch is always
11:06thinking a little bit like what Gakpo's thinking when that corner comes in if we get the ball we might
11:11score when Roy mentions about like you know when he was there and he'd be an offensive midfield player
11:16okay you go I'll sit here that's not in Jonesy he's not inclined to do that Verts is not inclined to do
11:21that you end up with everybody else all the four plays Eketike obviously Isak was off the pitch at the time
11:27Freem Pong's not that player everyone's trying to win the game there was not one player that's really
11:31going okay if we lose it in that midfield what happens next and that's where they got great
11:34example if you look at Arsenal last night Arsenal for all how brilliant they are and when you when
11:39you get to the top of the top of the league and you're thinking your confidence guy you look at
11:43Arsenal when they lose the ball forget about what they're doing the position they've got really
11:47good players they're brilliant at set pieces it's what they're doing without the ball they're hunting
11:51in packs and they're like tactics right to win they're just going to close people down they're not
11:55they're not getting bogged down by anything else so look at Arsenal's success at the moment
11:58there's still a lot to do for a minute there's a long way to go the bit of joy is coming from
12:02actually hunting the ball down chasing it pride hunger have Liverpool lost that a little bit I think
12:08they have
