01:16clean energy with subsea cables going in that the chance to transform a region
01:24like that with that with a kind of investment it really meant a lot to be
01:28able to call the Prime Minister who really cares about developing the
01:30country and this has been his vision I know you know him well too and so anyway
01:35it's extraordinary to see the impact of all this sounded like there's a lot of
01:38folks here from India or no if I said stand up if you're from India actually
01:42would you well be welcomed Wow look at that
01:50thank you everybody
01:51but I you know I had to wait for every piece of technology for a long time in my
02:05life waited five years to get a rotary phone and when the phone came five years
02:09for a rotary phone there's a government made it at that time there's a long
02:13waiting letter but the minute the phone came to the house we were one of the
02:17first in the neighborhood people would come to the house call their families it
02:23kind of like created a community around it so for me it was you know incredible
02:28to see how getting access to technology can have this profound shift in your life
02:33I had to wait for a long time to get access to a computer so that's what led me to
02:38this journey how old were you when you first had access to a computer you know
02:41I'd seen and had like you know you could get an hour of use maybe like once every
02:46two to three months but when I came to Stanford is when you could walk down to
02:50a lab and there were workstations and like I could open Emacs and I was uh you
02:56know it was a whole world that's where access was opportunity yeah that's right
03:01and that's what always reinforced to me that you know all of us are in this world of
03:06we are trying to give people access to technology and and you see that step
03:11change that comes with it
03:12look I mean I I was uh uh very interested in physics I was fascinated with
03:25semiconductors and computers and so to me it was literal I you know I literally wanted to be
03:31this place was called Silicon Valley so it's the best advertising ever right you know as a kid
03:36growing up you know you're interested in semiconductors is wonder that you could turn sand into into this
03:41thing uh which is the uh you know substrate of uh uh the digital age and so for me I literally
03:49wanted to be in Silicon Valley because that's what I was interested in
03:53the thing that attracted me to Google was literally in the mission statement and I am very serious about it
04:12the phrase to make information universally accessible and useful that phrase is why I joined Google because
04:20it resonated so much with me right this is about giving access to information knowledge to everyone in
04:28the world and and the journey continues across all of us I think AI is the ultimate expression of that
04:35right it's really giving a true knowledge collaborator companion how you want to think about it the access to
04:43everyone in the world regardless of where you're from uh and and and so it's a great equalizer I think
04:49when I came here it was probably two dollars and thirty cents per minute to call back home right and and so you know if you ever think that the curve of how technology makes things more accessible yeah it was you know used to write letters back then because it was so expensive to call
04:56now you know I'm you know I'm fortunate enough you know I see my parents regularly and I'm uh you know stay in close touch with them but you know when I came here it was probably two dollars and thirty cents per minute to call back home
05:03to call back home right and and uh so you know if you ever think that the curve of how technology makes things more accessible yeah it was you know used to write letters back then because it was so expensive to call
05:17now you know I'm fortunate enough you know I see my parents regularly and I'm uh you know stay in close touch with them but you know they talk about you know just just like you kind of disappear from their uh life but so I'm glad we're we're working all you know I look at there's a product we're working on called uh Google Beam and which really when you when two people talk you feel like physically they are in the same place
05:44America is truly a land of opportunity in a way the phrase I think very few people really understand uh you know deeply and uh it's extraordinary uh you can come here and you know if you're willing to work hard pursue your dreams uh anything is possible
