It’s time for a China vs USA showdown!

We’ve got our hands on a Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, and it’s going up against a Tesla Model S Plaid! It’s the first time we’ve featured a Xiaomi on this channel, but does it have what it takes to bring down the mighty Tesla? Let’s check out the stats…

First up, we have the Xiaomi. It’s powered by three electric motors, and these combine to produce an incredible 1,548hp and 1,770Nm of torque. It comes with all-wheel drive, and it weighs in at a pretty heavy 2,360kg. In terms of price, it costs ¥529,900, which is the equivalent of just £55,000!

Next up, it’s the Tesla. It’s equipped with three electric motors - one on the front axle, and two on the rear. Combined, they produce an almighty 1,020hp and 1,420Nm of torque. Naturally, the motors and batteries weigh it down a bit, so it tips the scales at 2,190kg. In terms of price, you can pick one up new for £113,000.

So the Xiaomi is up on power, but it’s also up on weight! So does it have what it takes to topple the mighty Tesla? There’s only one way to find out for sure… LET’S RACE!

00:00What will happen in a drag race between a Xiaomi Su7 Ultra and a Tesla Model S Plaid?
00:05Well, we're going to find out because I'm going to race them over the standing quarter mile.
00:08I'm Matt Watson and you're watching CarWow.
00:14The Xiaomi Su7 Ultra has three electric motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear,
00:19giving it all-wheel drive and launch control.
00:22It puts out 1,548 horsepower and 1,770 newton-metres of torque.
00:28It weighs 2,360 kilograms and costs 529,900 yuan in China.
00:35That's about 55,000 pounds.
00:37The Tesla Model S Plaid is also powered by three electric motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear.
00:42So it also has four-wheel drive and launch control.
00:45Combined, the Tesla has 1,020 horsepower and 1,420 newton-metres of torque.
00:50It weighs 2,190 kilograms and costs 115,000 pounds.
00:55Kynan, your car, it looks familiar.
00:58I've seen it on the internet somewhere.
01:00Tell me about it.
01:01Yeah, exactly.
01:01This is a car that we shipped from Beijing to Nürburgring.
01:05And later, Goodwood this year saw that we were at Nürburgring.
01:08They also invited us to Goodwood Fastest of Speed this year.
01:11You kind of like glossed over the Nürburgring there a little bit, matey boy,
01:15because there's some numbers on the back of your car there.
01:18It says 7 minutes, 9.8 seconds.
01:20Well, actually, that's my record.
01:22That's the unofficial record with the BTG lap record, basically, without the street.
01:27So that's 7 minutes, 09.8.
01:29The official record with the full lap Nürburgring, that's from Xiaomi official driver, Vincent.
01:35I think he did it in 7 minutes, 04.9.
01:38Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:39But that was in your car?
01:40This BTG lap time was my car.
01:42The official lap record was the Xiaomi car.
01:45Anyway, the fastest this car has been around the Nürburgring, with anyone driving, was like 7 minutes, 25.
01:50So you drove your Xiaomi around the Nürburgring faster than the record set in the Tesla by Tesla factory.
01:56Yeah, I think that's the case.
02:00Okay.
02:01Am I just about to be humiliated?
02:04Well, actually, I wouldn't say so, because that's a different car from several years ago.
02:09This is a new generation.
02:10During the age of electrification, I would say the different generations, there are a lot of changes.
02:14Listen, listen.
02:15You have like 1,550 horsepower.
02:19I've only got like 1,020.
02:20You've got way more horsepower.
02:22You've almost got 1,800 newton meters of torque.
02:24I've got like 1,400.
02:25And it's less expensive.
02:26How much is one of those in China?
02:28Well, actually, you can make a guess.
02:29I don't need to guess.
02:30Someone's told me, actually.
02:31It's like only 50,000 pounds, isn't it?
02:33Yeah, I think in pounds, it's this specific one.
02:36The basic one with air suspension is 53,000 pounds.
02:38Oh, we're f***ing.
02:44Anyway, shall we get on with racing?
02:48We've got cold tires, right?
02:50Is your battery all warmed up and ready to go, or do you not need to warm it up like I do my Tesla?
02:54You also need to.
02:55So just 30 seconds, it will be ready.
02:57Is there like a launch procedure like in mine?
03:00Mine has to go into like cheetah stance.
03:02It's now ready.
03:03What about yours?
03:04Is yours just straight get and go?
03:05Yeah, I think so.
03:07It also prepared itself with the gesture, a little bit lean forward.
03:10Yeah.
03:10Did Jeremy just copy Tesla or something?
03:13Hmm.
03:14Yeah, that's an interesting question.
03:15We have to see the result.
03:17Let's move on from that, I think is what he's saying.
03:20Matt, are you sure that you don't need to warm up your tire?
03:22Because this one got semi-sleaks.
03:24Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
03:25You're on semi-sleaks?
03:27Let's...
03:27Let's...
03:27Yes.
03:29These are the Chinese semi-sleaks.
03:32This is...
03:33So it's basically the Chinese Pirelli.
03:36Chinese Trophy RS.
03:38No, this is not fair.
03:40But when it's cold, it doesn't work.
03:41Good, let's race.
03:42We're just going to do two races, then it's a game over.
03:44That's it.
03:46Nice try.
03:47This is not fair.
03:49Anyway, we'll be able to see how much power this puts down through its data.
03:52So thanks to Loutloss for lending us this car.
03:54So they do lots of bits and extras for Teslas.
03:56Check them out.
03:57Links in the description.
03:59Three, two, one.
04:05Look, I'm so fast off the line.
04:07I knew I'd have him.
04:08Come on.
04:13No, he ain't going to catch me.
04:15Hmm.
04:22Oh, it's coming back, though.
04:37Hey, that was quick.
04:38You're going to have to get up earlier in the morning to catch me out, matey boy.
04:42Did you have some wheel spin?
04:43Yeah, I had a lot of wheel spin, I think.
04:45Because the tyre is cold.
04:47I'm glad.
04:48I'm glad your tyres are cold.
04:49I need them to be cold.
04:50Now, if you want to go down there and then come back and warm up your tyres on the way,
04:54feel free.
04:55I don't need to warm up mine.
04:56It's just putting the time that I expect it to.
04:58Okay, no problem.
04:59Tesla quality, mate.
05:08Okay, do you feel like you have warmed up your tyres sufficiently?
05:11Yeah, I think it's much better.
05:12Okay.
05:13I hope for your sake it is much better,
05:15because you got absolutely hammered on the last run.
05:18Three, two, one.
05:20One.
05:25Just had him on the line again.
05:34Where is he, though?
05:36Is he coming back?
05:37Can't see him.
05:38He's coming.
05:49Come on, come on, come on.
05:59Whoa.
06:00Whoa, whoa, whoa.
06:02I just won that.
06:04That was the best launch I have ever, ever, ever had,
06:07and the best time I have ever had in a Tesla Model S Plaid.
06:12And you were coming back at me.
06:13Now, normally, I would say best two out of three.
06:15I've won.
06:16Game over.
06:16Let's move on to the rolling race.
06:17Thank you very much.
06:18But I'm going to play fair here.
06:20Let's do best three out of five.
06:22Let's do another one.
06:23And I'm nervous about what's going to happen now.
06:26Three, two, one.
06:28So I've got him off the line again.
06:35Okay, that's close.
06:41Can he pull it back?
06:42Come on, Tesla!
06:58No!
06:59Oh, I'm coming back.
07:06That's pretty close.
07:07But I think at the initial stage, you are faster, actually.
07:10I'm faster at the initial stage just because my reaction is slightly better
07:14after having done about a million drag race launches
07:17and this only being, like, your third one.
07:19You won.
07:20So it's now two, one.
07:22If you hone your launch, you will start beating me by an increasing amount.
07:27So that's what your challenge is now, my friend.
07:29How much can you beat me by?
07:31Yeah, I will try my best.
07:33Three, two, one.
07:40Could I win this one?
07:40I could win this one.
07:54What?
07:54That was a perfect launch for me.
08:10Crap launch for him.
08:11And I think he just nipped it.
08:13You need to be more on it on the launch because it's the decider.
08:16If you were a fraction of a second later on that launch,
08:20I would have won and it would have been game over
08:22and you wouldn't have done Jeremy proud.
08:26Three, two, one.
08:33Closer on the launch that time.
08:35This is definitely quick off the line.
08:37I think there's a power limit.
08:54It's quite a severe limit.
09:02What happened?
09:03I think there's a slight power limit when it launches itself.
09:07So there's quite an evident drop in power for one second, I think.
09:12It hasn't done that before, though, has it?
09:14It never happened before.
09:15So it's quite stable because we still have 73% of SOC.
09:20Okay, including the tires, like traction,
09:21it just lost traction and just cut it.
09:23Maybe warm your tires up a bit more on the way.
09:25Okay, okay.
09:27Canaan, the brakes on that car, are they standard?
09:29Is that what you get?
09:30Are they carbon ceramics?
09:31Yeah, they're carbon ceramics and standard.
09:34What, for £50,000?
09:36And do you know how much does it cost
09:38to repair one of the front discs?
09:40What, in China or in the United Kingdom?
09:42In the United Kingdom, it probably costs £50,000.
09:45Yeah, at the moment, if you do it in a Xiaomi shop,
09:48it's 1.5K.
09:52In Euro.
09:57Let's race.
09:59Three, two, one.
10:01Yeah, I'm not on the line there, but look, this comes good, like that.
10:16And what's happened to him?
10:17Okay, so what happened there?
10:35You got the better launch, and then it slowed up.
10:39Yeah, I think they have a limitation on power.
10:41It's really strange, but the acceleration at over 150 is slow.
10:46It turns out that the battery on the Xiaomi still had enough charge
10:48to deliver maximum power, but it simply got too hot.
10:51So we left it to cool down before doing one final decider drag race,
10:55where winner takes all.
10:573, 2, 1.
11:05Nick-a-neck launch.
11:10It's coming now.
11:17Yeah, his battery's better.
11:18Look at that.
11:19Oh, my God.
11:20Whoa!
11:32Come on!
11:33Woo!
11:34I think that's it, isn't it, really, Canaan?
11:36That's it.
11:37Your battery got too hot.
11:39Yeah, I think.
11:40I've never experienced before,
11:41because I've never done this consecutive launch.
11:44Yeah.
11:44Good launch by you.
11:45Your timing was spot on.
11:46This still gets ahead a bit, doesn't it?
11:48Like, the first, like, 100 metres, this is the Tesla, I think.
11:51And then that thing just pulls.
11:54Anyway, let's do the thing.
11:55So then, what exactly happened?
11:57Well, the Xiaomi won.
11:59It completed the standing quarter mile in 9.3 seconds.
12:02The Tesla took 9.5 seconds,
12:05which is actually the quickest time I've ever had
12:07from a Tesla Model S Plaid.
12:08Just goes to show how quick that much cheaper Xiaomi actually is.
12:13Before our next race, a quick message that could save you big time.
12:16If you're looking to buy a used car, bike, or van anytime soon,
12:20then this is for you.

12:27stolen, or had its mileage changed.
12:29Look at this Opel Crossland X on CarVertical.
12:32It's only done 2,487 miles.
12:34It looks unused, but it's flagged for damage
12:36and shouldn't be trusted without a deeper check.
12:38You'd never have known that without a car history check.
12:41So when buying a used car, bike, or van,
12:44run a CarVertical report using code CARWOW for 20% off
12:47or follow the link in the description.
12:49Now, back to the race.
12:51Right, now we're going to have a rolling race
12:53and we're going to do it from 50 kilometers an hour,
12:54which is around 30 miles an hour.
12:56So we're going to race over the half mile
12:58and I'm going to call it in.
13:00We're going to see what happens.
13:01Now, if you want to see some amazing deals

13:13and the pinned comment.
13:15Go check out the latest electric car deals through CarWOW.
13:17You'll be amazed at some of the discounts.
13:20Anyway, let's get on with this race now.
13:22You ready then?
13:22You good?
13:23Good to go.
13:24Three, two, one, go.
13:33Right, now it's pulling.
13:34Look at that.
13:35What's the gap going to be like at the half?
13:47Am I going to hit a limiter?
13:48This is still flying.
13:49Okay, so we are really seeing that there is a thing
14:10where the Tesla's very good at that initial go, isn't it?
14:13It's got the edge and the jammy for that initial bit,
14:15but then that thing.
14:16That's more like an internal combustion engine car
14:19and the way that it goes.
14:20Yeah, especially over 200.
14:21It's really persistent.
14:22200 to 300.
14:23I think I hit the 300.
14:25Really?
14:26It's persistent like a wasp and it looks like a wasp.
14:30Yeah, it's really keep you the constant push.
14:33Right, let's do it one more time.
14:34We'll try it from like 100 kilometers an hour,
14:37so 60 miles an hour.
14:38Three, two, one, go.
14:42Yes, now that's interesting.
14:43At that higher speed, that just took off then.
15:04This is still pulling.
15:05I'm going to do 290 over the line.
15:07All these brakes aren't happy.
15:17They're doing better than normal ones.
15:19These are upgraded brakes and they're doing way better.
15:21By now, the old brakes on the Model S Plaid
15:23would just be warning signs and stuff like that.
15:25They're just a bit smelly.
15:27That was very, very interesting.
15:28When we were going quicker, that got the lead immediately.
15:32I think actually I've done this right this time
15:35because I've pushed the boost button.
15:37This time it gives real full 1,500 and 14 horsepower.
15:42What?
15:43What are you saying?
15:44In the rolling, last time I think it's 1,300 something horsepower
15:48because I have to press the boost when it's rolling
15:51to get 1,500.
15:54Oh, okay.
15:55I just need to check something.
15:56Do you need to press the boost button in the drag race?
15:59That's the interesting part, no.
16:01Okay, so you didn't cock the drag race up.
16:03That's fine.
16:03It was just that first race, but you still won.
16:06Yeah, with boost, it's just faster.
16:08Now we're going to have a brake test from 160 kilometres an hour.
16:11Also known as 100 miles an hour.
16:12When we're ready to the cones, full emergency stop.
16:25Oh.
16:29Wow.
16:29I'm amazed at that.
16:31I saw your car skipping a little bit with the ABS.
16:34So I think your ABS kind of like did you in then.
16:37I was impressed by this car.
16:39Yeah, I think the tyre is cold again.
16:42So it is skidding forward.
16:44Ah.
16:45Yeah.
16:45Okay.
16:47Well, I've won something.
16:48I'm not going to let you win everything.
16:51I'm happy with that.
16:53You happy?
16:53Yeah, actually, because the tyre, I think it needs some time to get into the condition.
16:59And also, it's very easy to get cold because of the high speed thing.
17:02Actually, I'm impressed by the acceleration at really above 200.
17:07Yeah, really persistent.
17:08Yeah, it's really, really strong, isn't it?
17:10And I'm quite impressed with this.
17:11And I'm impressed with the brakes on it.
17:12Anyway, thank you very much to Loutlos for lending us this.
17:15If you want to watch some of the videos, just click on the video windows.

17:25How do you do it on the Tesla?
17:28I don't know.
17:30Thanks for watching.
17:31I'll see you next time.
