Auteur du livre culte THE CELLULOID CLOSET et co-fondateur d'ACT UP, Vito Russo est une figure incontournable du militantisme LGBT. Au tout début des années 1970, le jeune Vito Russo devient l'un des membres les plus en vue du mouvement gay encore balbutiant aux Etats-Unis. Il est ainsi le premier à s'intéresser aux représentations des gays et des lesbiennes dans le cinéma hollywoodien, et le succès de son livre THE CELLULOID CLOSET en 1981 fait de lui l'un des porte-paroles de la communauté. Un rôle qu'il endosse aussi dans la lutte contre l'homophobie et en particulier dans la lutte contre le sida puisqu'il participe à la création de deux associations aussi essentielles que GLAAD et ACT UP. Produit pour la chaine HBO, ce documentaire exceptionnel signé Jeffrey Schwarz revient sur la vie et le parcours de cet homme hors du commun.
