"Transformers One" has a stellar cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Keegan-Michael Key. Watch them join director Josh Cooley and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to talk about the film’s revolutionary 3D, the “nerve-racking” pressure of portraying iconic characters, “traumatizing” childhood movies that inspired their performances, and much more.

00:00these are the interviews for thor 5 right well i should go i guess now you're you're in it
00:06congrats oh thanks man thor was holding that's what i said yeah that's who thor was holding
00:11you're muted jeff i'm crushing it already dude
00:23did you see in 3d i did not see it in 3d i did did you see it in 3d
00:29it's bonkers dude it must be i mean the world building in this movie is redonculated it's
00:36crazy how beautiful cyber cybertron looks and the grading and everything it's it's amazing
00:43they're also going to do it in 40x though which i want to see where the chairs are shaking and like
00:49all the that's how i want to see it i want to see i want to get a concussion which i think you
00:53so definitely do it in 40x we use the depth to our advantage to make sure that what you're paying
00:59attention to is really what you should be looking at and i thought they did a phenomenal job it's
01:03one of the and i it's sounds obvious for me saying this because i directed it but also it's it's the
01:08best 3d i've seen it really is it's pretty stunning and you know we've shot and we've shot at native
01:14we've done a conversions before and one of the things we learned along the way is that that too
01:21often the filmmakers are trying to use the depth just because it's depth as opposed to worrying about
01:30the audience's eyes and how your eye focuses and refocuses so the one of the things that we also made
01:36a decision is we kept a pretty constant depth all the way through so your eyes are not adjusting
01:41all the time you know like a lot of people when they first saw avatar complained about headaches
01:45we haven't heard anybody complain so far um and and it really is come it really comes from the
01:51experience of going through the process a few times before we were enemies
01:56we were like brothers you're ready always ready let's punch in
02:05there's always that like pivotal moment when you're a kid where you see like a beloved character
02:14become a villain you did that and so i guess my question is why did you want to make children cry
02:19it's my only goal these kids don't cry enough these days if you ask me they're sort of sensitized
02:25let's see if people rip their hearts out uh like i don't know i think about the movies i watched that
02:32really like evoked so many feelings in me when i was like only on this earth for like eight years
02:37like there's some things that just like i think about the transformers movie right like i think
02:43about fox and the hound and i also think about the care bears movie like there's a moment in the
02:48care bears movie that gets really dark at camp care a lot i don't want to rehash that and then i
02:53think about like the never-ending story when he's trying to pull you know his horse out like oh my god
02:58man stupid like it's like so i think about those moments and i was like we don't really have that
03:04anymore yeah and a lot of animation so i was like i really wanted to have that moment um to traumatize
03:10people like i was traumatized i don't think i should be the only one trauma should be shared
03:14i was wondering if if aatron was the only uh uh reference to your past career aaron actually i think
03:23it is i'm trying to think i don't think i and that's not improvised that was written in the script
03:27they wrote that in there as an easter egg before i was uh signed on but i think they i think they
03:32knew i was going to do it and then they wrote it into the script the last time that happened i think
03:36was no it wasn't in this project it was a different project that is the last time i can think of
03:41there being a key and peel reference what about what about buzz lightyear stuff i am buzz lightyear
03:46space ranger we were throwing around some terrible other options like like megan tron and just like
03:53really bad stuff i didn't know that's not bad that's not bad i get it i get it at pixar
04:00everything's in-house you can pretty much make the entire film there um working at paramount and
04:04working with lorenzo and working with ilm it's you know a vendor thing but really that's the only
04:10difference i mean everybody is just as talented and just as as driven and it i had a blast working
04:16with with all a whole new crew it's really great my finger can transform guess which one
04:21allow me
04:24you're the comedy of the film but you're also like a badass action star in the film you get to play
04:32both knife hands i have knife hands i can see that uh which kind of reminded me of like kumail and
04:37eternal so did you also get jacked yeah i got completely jacked yeah yeah no carbs for like six
04:42months just you know just just boiled chickens and spinach every day three meals a day and then
04:49of course your supplements you know oh yeah so if you could see me i mean it's the depth of the
04:53camera you'd say i look exactly like chris hemsworth i'm just a biracial version of chris hemsworth
04:58fantastic and they also have you in all that armor so you know you couldn't yeah i mean it's a whole
05:03thing yeah i don't even know why i did it because i'm hidden what's the equivalent of a line that you
05:08had to say in this movie where you were like even though this is just a couple words it's so iconic
05:13i have to get this right i mean i did i am optimus prime was uh or even the rollout we are more
05:20than meets the eye i was thankful that what the uh wasn't required of me was to come in and mimic
05:27rip off what peter cullen had done this was the youthful version um playful before he had become
05:33the all-knowing wise optimus prime toward the end of the film there's kind of one speech or two
05:39where we really lean into the cadence the vocal quality of what peter was doing and um and that
05:45was the most nerve-wracking part for me and that was kind of uh you know and there were times in the
05:51film where i was leaning toward it a little too heavily a little too early you know and josh was
05:57like oh it sounds great but we're not there yet the character hasn't evolved to to be optimus prime so um
06:03i think that it was something that was really excited me about the film the character for an
06:07audience was it was a fresh take and something unique you know i didn't know where we what we
06:12could do with this world that hadn't been done before and and then josh has brought us such a
06:16brilliant script and we had that opportunity so speaking of chris you know uh he's he's rumored
06:21to be in this transformers gi joe crossover yes i have heard that rumor i've heard that rumor and
06:27and i wish i i had more information that i wouldn't be able to share with you
06:32i wish i had more information that i wouldn't be able to that i wouldn't be allowed to share
06:38with you um i have somebody mentioned it like during i heard someone mention it once so there
06:45is the i think there is a rumor yes well what about you and then you know uh brian and who knows who
06:51else you know what i mean did you say ryan no brian oh me and brian oh brian i was like i was like i was
06:57like do you know another rumor that i'm like it's the gi joe transformers deadpool crossover
07:03but you'd be down though i mean i would 100 be down 100 i'm i'm gonna ask them why uh why they
07:12haven't given you anything to not tell me because that's a little bit now is the time for us to stand
07:18up together as one
07:21you
