00:00The date is commemorated each year by the club at the site of the crash, the hill of Superga.
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at the 15 saddest and most impactful days in the history of sports.
00:11Good evening, if you've tuned in tonight expecting the outstanding race that the San Marino Grand Prix here at Imola promised to be,
00:17then I'm sorry that's not the program we have for you.
00:21The death of Owen Hart.
00:22Part of the allure of pro wrestling comes from the times when the line between fiction and reality is blurred.
00:26Last night in Kansas City, Missouri, with more than 18,000 people in the arena and a large worldwide pay-per-view audience,
00:34Hart was getting ready to make a spectacular entrance, similar to one he'd made before.
00:39But in 1999, when Owen Hart fell 78 feet after a harness malfunction at a Kansas City pay-per-view,
00:44things became far too real, far too quickly.
00:47All of a sudden, all gimmicks and acting went out the window as the WWE staff and some of the wrestlers themselves scrambled to try to save Hart's life.
00:53Unfortunately, the damage he sustained in the fall was too great and he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
01:10The show did continue on that night, but the effect of losing a superstar like him in the prime of his life never truly faded.
01:16The 1955 Le Mans disaster.
01:18Though it happened decades ago, the 1955 Le Mans disaster remains the most catastrophic accident in motor racing history.
01:25Driver Pierre Levegue's car was involved in a crash that sent it flying into the air.
01:29Levegue was killed instantly after being thrown from the vehicle,
01:32the debris from the car went flying towards the crowd of spectators.
01:3582 people were killed in the chaos and between 120 and 180 were injured.
01:39This horrific accident caused many countries, including France, Switzerland and Spain,
01:43to ban motorsports until greater levels of safety precautions had been implemented.
01:47A shocking day for the sport.
01:49Chapikentz plane crash.
01:50In 2016, the Brazilian football team Chapikentz was left utterly devastated when a plane carrying the entire team crashed in Colombia.
01:57On the way to the biggest game in the club's history, the team is in good spirits.
02:03An oversight and pre-flight preparation had led the aircraft to run out of fuel in the air.
02:06Of the 77 people on board, only 6 survived, including just 3 of the club's players.
02:12Poor decision-making by the pilot in the middle of the ongoing crisis was cited as a major reason for the outcome.
02:1771 people died when the aircraft plunged into the Colombian mountainside.
02:22Brazil's O Globo newspaper reports the pilot declined two chances to refuel.
02:27When reports of the crash reached other football clubs internationally,
02:31there was a huge outpouring of grief and many attempts from other clubs to help Chapikentz rebuild.
02:35A tragedy that will haunt this club for decades to come.
02:381985 Hazel Stadium disaster.
02:41This infamous night put a stain on English football that did not fully fade away for years.
02:45Liverpool met Juventus in the 1985 European Cup final in Hazel Stadium in Brussels, Belgium.
02:50The match was marred by some disgusting fan violence in the stands.
02:53The first real troubles began by the fence between the Liverpool fans and Block Z.
02:59It was half past six.
03:00A combination of factors turned a potentially minor incident into a disaster.
03:06Tension had been brewing prior to the start of the match and eventually a group of Liverpool fans stormed an area full of Juve supporters.
03:12In their desperate attempts to flee, they forced the side perimeter wall to collapse, killing 39 people and injuring around 600.
03:18In total, 39 people died at the Hazel.
03:22It was such an ugly moment for the sport that all English clubs were banned from competing in UEFA events for five years.
03:28Liverpool were banned for one further year.
03:30Zambian National Football Team Air Disaster.
03:33When the Zambian National Football Team were traveling by plane to a 1994 World Cup qualifying game with Senegal and Dakar, human error ended up costing them everything.
03:42On the 27th of April 1993, the plane carrying the Zambian National Football Team crashed off the coast of Gabon.
03:49All 30 passengers and crew perished.
03:5218 of them were international footballers.
03:55And with them went the hopes of a nation.
03:57The pilot noticed an engine fire while flying off the coast of Gabon.
04:00Official reports would later conclude that he was fatigued and in his attempt to turn off the faulty engine, he chose the wrong one.
04:07This led the plane to crash 500 meters from land.
04:10All 30 people aboard, including 18 players, were killed on impact, ripping apart the Zambian football team in the process.
04:16If somebody had told me in 1993 if that would have happened, I would not believe them.
04:21But we had that faith that we'll come back one day and we'll be even much stronger.
04:27A week-long period of mourning was announced by the government shortly after.
04:31Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s crash.
04:33It's not often you see a legitimate superstar end up losing their life in the middle of competition.
04:37I think he worked hard on portraying himself as the tough guy.
04:41But if you looked in his eyes, the guy was a very kind man.
04:44But for the 49-year-old Dale Earnhardt Sr., that's exactly what happened.
04:48While competing in the final lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001, Earnhardt was involved in a three-car collision.
04:54After crashing into rival Ken Schrader, both cars slid off the track's asphalt into the infield grass.
05:00It would become very clear that something was wrong.
05:02Earnhardt had been killed instantly by the impact, sustaining a fatal basilar skull fracture.
05:07This is undoubtedly one of the toughest announcements that I've ever personally had to make.
05:12But after the accident and turned forward to the end of the Daytona 500, we've lost Dale Earnhardt.
05:19With 17 million people tuning in live for this race, it represented a huge blow to the sport
05:24and a catalyst for much greater safety regulations moving forward.
05:28The Hillsborough Disaster.
05:29The sad fact about sporting events is that it sometimes takes a truly horrific incident
05:33to force teams and franchises to make much-needed changes.
05:36Liverpool supporters have been allocated the west end of the Hillsborough Stadium,
05:40so their route will keep them away from Nottingham Forest fans arriving from the south.
05:44This also means the Liverpool supporters will all have to pass through one entrance,
05:50Leppings Lane.
05:51And for Liverpool Football Club, there were some real oversights in areas of crowd control and safety precautions.
05:56When overcrowding in the stands during Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final clash with Nottingham Forest
06:01led to a deadly crush, the result was brutal.
06:0497 fans were killed and hundreds more were injured.
06:06Though some blamed unruly fan behaviour at first,
06:09it became clear the regulations needed to change for all football teams, and thankfully they did.
06:13The victims' families continued to fight for justice,
06:16with them voicing their disgust at how little priority was placed on general fan safety prior to the disaster.
06:21And at the heart of it, of course, are the 96 people who went to a football match
06:25thinking they were just going for a great family day out, and they never came home.
06:31The Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Air Disaster.
06:34September 7, 2011 marked one of the darkest days in the history of international hockey,
06:38when a plane carrying the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team crashed
06:41while taking off for a flight to Minsk, Belarus.
06:44Moments after takeoff, the Yak-42 slammed into this Russian riverbank, killing 43 people.
06:51The team were being transported to their first game of the KHL season,
06:54when the pilot lost control of his vehicle and crashed after failing to take off.
06:57Of the 45 people on board, only the flight mechanic survived.
07:00As it turned out, the pilot was woefully underqualified to fly the plane,
07:04and had falsified documents in order to get permission.
07:06Of course, by the time the crash happened, there was no one left to prosecute.
07:10The Lima Football Riot.
07:11The infamous Lima Football Riot is not the only horrific sports disaster
07:15to befall the people of the Peruvian capital.
07:17More than 45,000 soccer-crazed fans are jammed into Peru's national stadium.
07:23The event this day?
07:24An Olympic-qualifying soccer match between Peru and their arch-rival, Argentina.
07:30Both world-class teams.
07:31The stage is set for a monumental clash of the titans.
07:37But the day will be remembered for a much more somber reason.
07:41We'd be remiss if we didn't also mention the 1987 plane crash that killed 42 people,
07:46including 37 players and staff members of the Alianza Lima Football Club.
07:50But in 1964, a tragedy of monstrous proportions befell the Estadio Nacional
07:55during a game between Peru and Argentina.
07:57After a referee decision infuriated the Peruvian sport, they stormed the pitch.
08:01Leading to a crush that had hundreds of people trapped.
08:04Panic spectators stampede to the exit, trampling over the fallen.
08:08Riot police were called in, and by the time the dust settled,
08:10328 people had lost their lives and over 500 were injured.
08:14One of the darkest days in football history.
08:16Iraq's extermination of athletes.
08:18Stadium disasters and accidental crashes are one thing,
08:21but the international slaying of athletes by a brutal dictator
08:23as punishment for poor performances?
08:25That's a different level of depravity.
08:27During Saddam Hussein's regime, the country's athletes and coaches
08:30faced harsh consequences such as being imprisoned, caned, or worse for losing.
08:34In 2007, the remains of 13 members of the country's Taekwondo team
08:37were found in the desert after they had been kidnapped
08:39while en route to a training camp in Jordan.
08:41It was a barbaric display of violence
08:43and one that was widely condemned by the entire sporting world.
08:47Happy Valley Racecourse Fire
08:48Over 100 years ago, the Chinese racecourse Happy Valley
08:52witnessed one of the most destructive fires in sports arena history.
08:55Due to the fact that the stands were largely made of bamboo and wood,
08:58they were rapidly set ablaze after coming into contact with a fire
09:01caused by a nearby food stall.
09:03With improper precautions taken and inadequate tools to fight the fire,
09:07it eventually claimed the lives of 614 people.
09:09This was not just one of the most impactful disasters in sporting history,
09:13it remains one of the deadliest fires in modern Chinese history.
09:17Ayrton Senna's Death
09:18The legendary Ayrton Senna had already voiced his concerns
09:21over the state of Formula 1 safety in 1994
09:23and had his doubts about taking to the Imola circuit in Italy on May 1st of that year.
09:28Today, we've lost arguably the greatest talent of his generation.
09:32After a high-speed crash at Tamburello, Ayrton Senna is dead.
09:37Just one day before, his fellow driver Roland Ratzenberger
09:39had become the first F1 fatality in 12 years,
09:42but Senna decided to race anyway.
09:44Unfortunately, his car collided with a concrete wall
09:46at a speed of over 200 kilometers per hour,
09:48causing him to sustain severe injuries that could have all led to his death on their own.
09:52Though attempts were made to resuscitate him, they were futile.
09:55It's been a dreadful day,
09:56and the loss of Ayrton Senna is really tough to comprehend.
10:00This marked a major turning point for Formula 1,
10:02with increased emphasis placed on advanced crash barriers,
10:05cockpit protection, and medical protocols.
10:08Israeli team attack at the Munich Olympics
10:10At the 1972 Olympics in Munich,
10:12eight members of the Palestinian militant organization Black September
10:15attacked the Athletes Village,
10:16killing two members of the Israeli Olympic team.
10:19The 1972 Munich Games became one of the darkest moments in Olympic history.
10:24They also took nine hostages.
10:25This understandably kicked off a major panic
10:27and a total overshadowing of the Munich Games.
10:30While several rescue attempts were attempted,
10:32they failed, and in the process,
10:33all nine hostages were executed.
10:35Five of the eight perpetrators were also killed in the chaos,
10:38but the damage was already done.
10:39The disorganization of the police and government response
10:42was widely criticized,
10:43but after a 34-hour suspension,
10:45the games continued as scheduled.
10:46The German authorities were criticized
10:48for a botched rescue operation.
10:50The Superga Disaster
10:52In 1949, a disaster that shook Italian football
10:55to its very core took place.
10:56On May 4, 1949,
10:58a tragic air disaster robbed Italy of its greatest team.
11:02An Italian Airlines flight
11:03carrying the entire Torino football team
11:05crashed into the retaining wall
11:07at the rear side
11:08of the famous Basilica of Superga in Torre.
11:10A navigational error made by the pilot
11:12was brought about by terrible flying conditions
11:14as they made their descent.
11:15Instead of reaching the runway as planned,
11:17the aircraft crashed into the Basilica,
11:19killing everyone on board.
11:21Until that day,
11:22a catastrophe of that proportion had never happened.
11:25There was an outpour of support
11:26from every club in Italy,
11:27with some offering players
11:28to the struggling side free of charge.
11:30They even awarded an honorary
11:32Setia A title to Torino,
11:34but nothing could erase the foundational damage
11:36and trauma this accident caused.

11:53Munich Air Disaster
11:55It was the most infamous disaster
11:56in football history.
11:58The world-famous Manchester United
12:00and their iconic manager, Matt Busby,
12:02were returning from a European Cup matchup
12:04against Red Star Belgrade.
12:05Of the 44 who boarded the charter plane home,
12:0923 died in the Munich disaster.
12:11Together with officials and journalists,
12:14eight players lost their lives.
12:16During their third attempt to take off
12:17from Munich-Rheim Airport in Munich,
12:19West Germany,
12:20the unthinkable happened.
12:21The plane skidded on the runway,
12:22crashing into the fence
12:23that surrounded the airport,
12:24leading to a fire
12:25that threatened to engulf everyone inside.
12:27Out of the 44 on board,
12:2921 survived,
12:30but it was a moment that left
12:31the world's most famous football club
12:32completely ripped apart.
12:34Other clubs stepped up
12:35and offered players and money,
12:36but there was only so much
12:37that could be done.
12:37Decades later,
12:38Manchester United have still not forgotten
12:40this dark night in their history.
12:42The foyers of English football,
12:43the foyers of Manchester.
12:45What infamously dark day
12:46in sports history stands out
