00:00Can you hear that? It's the sound of dogs that have been abandoned, abused and neglected,
00:11all looking for one thing, a brand new start in a loving home.
00:16This month is Adoptober, a time to raise awareness as the RSPCA faces a significant challenge.
00:22The Laybourne Animal Centre near Westmoreland is currently overwhelmed,
00:26the charity caring for a record number of dogs.
00:29So the aim of it really is to try and raise awareness of adoption as a concept
00:34and to try and get some of our animals that need adoption, that need homes,
00:41in front of the public that might be available to take them home and provide them homes.
00:47Adoption is really at the centre of what we do, it's really why we do what we do.
00:53So all the animals that come into the centres have come from cases of cruelty
00:58or neglect and the ultimate aim for us is to find them a forever home that they can then
01:06live a happy and normal life.
01:08We've got 40 dogs at the moment at this centre, ranging from large to small
01:14and some of them are available for rehoming and some of them aren't.
01:18Recent data from the RSPCA shows that larger breeds can wait up to seven times longer
01:22than smaller dogs to be adopted.
01:25Elsa arrived at RSPCA care back in February,
01:28but came to Laybourne in July and has been looking for a home since August.
01:33Despite Elsa's age, she's very energetic, but be aware, she is very affectionate.
01:40Huskies feature in the top 20 breeds of dogs which wait longest to find a home.
01:44A pet behaviour expert at the RSPCA said,
01:48we desperately need adopters now more than ever,
01:51so we can continue to rescue and care for the animals who need us.
