Transcript
00:01Mushroom? No. What is that? No. Oh, come on, Zangief. Gross.
00:09Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 best animated movie cameos.
00:16Aw, poor fella. Uh-huh.
00:17Yeah, ain't I a stinker?
00:21Number 20. Totoro, Toy Story 3.
00:24As we follow the adventures of Woody and Buzz Lightyear across the Toy Story franchise,
00:28we get to see a wide variety of classic toys on screen.
00:31Hey, Etch. Draw.
00:35Oh! Got me again, Etch. You've been working on that draw.
00:39From Barbie to Etch-A-Sketch, there's bound to be a toy you're familiar with somewhere.
00:44One of the more unusual cameos is the appearance of a Totoro plushie in the third installment.
00:49This magical forest spirit is from the Studio Ghibli film My Neighbor Totoro.
00:53Totoro!
00:54Totoro, Mei's lost somewhere. I looked and looked, but I can't find her anywhere.
01:01Oh, please. You have to help me find her.
01:03It's a hugely popular character in Japan, and its cameo in a Pixar flick might be because of a fun family connection.
01:10Turns out the art director of Toy Story 3 is married to the niece of Hayao Miyazaki,
01:15the writer and director of the iconic Japanese animated film.
01:19It's right around the corner! Yay!
01:22I'm going to go!
01:23Let's look at it!
01:24Number 19. Randy Marsh. Chippendale Rescue Rangers.
01:28Since this film is based on a well-loved animated TV series, it's full of nostalgic cartoon cameos.
01:34While racing through a convention, Chippendale hide at the feet of the still-feuding He-Man and Skeletor.
01:40Hey, there's something down there.
01:42There's nothing down there, you boob.
01:44You walk around with no pants long enough and you start to notice every breeze.
01:48If you stick through the film's credits, Darkwing Duck shows up to make a pitch for his own live-action film.
01:53We want Darkwing! We want Darkwing! Say it with me! We want Darkwing! What a lot of malarkey!
02:01But perhaps the most surprising cameo is the inclusion of Randy Marsh from South Park.
02:06While investigating a bathhouse, the chipmunks catch a glimpse of Stan's dad.
02:10I got the kids on the weekends, but it's not the same.
02:13Considering Randy's hot tub experience on his own show, we're glad he's stuck to the sauna for this surprise appearance.
02:20Number 18. Sebastian. Aladdin.
02:23Part of the fun of watching Disney is finding the cameos made by characters from their other films.
02:28Genie of the lamp!
02:32Right here, direct from the lamp.
02:33Right here for your very much wish fulfillment.
02:37Whoa, whoa, whoa.
02:38Since The Little Mermaid rejuvenated the Disney animation studio, it's no wonder that a character from that movie would pop up in its next big hit, Aladdin.
02:46The genie's fondness for magical impressions and pop culture references makes it easy to bring an ocean character to a desert story.
02:53Are you looking at me? Did you rub my lamp? Did you wake me up? Did you bring me here?
02:58And all of a sudden you're walking out on me? I don't think so.
03:02When Aladdin asks his magical servant to make him a king, Genie jokingly produces a recipe book.
03:08The page for Alaskan King Crab opens the door for a brief visit from Ariel's friend Sebastian, accompanied by a few notes of his signature song.
03:16Can you make me a prince?
03:18Oh, let's see.
03:19Chicken a la king?
03:21No. Alaskan King Crab.
03:23I hate it when I do that.
03:25Number 17. Daxter. Ratchet and Clank.
03:28Based on the video game series, this sci-fi comedy follows a misfit duo as they help save planets from destruction.
03:35When Clank tries to scan Ratchet to figure out what species he is, a number of possibilities pop up on his screen.
03:41Apologies. I have not been able to locate your species in my database.
03:46I get that a lot. There aren't many of us left. Not in this galaxy anyway.
03:50One of those is the Otzel Daxter from the Jak and Daxter video game series.
03:55Both of these franchises are from Sony Entertainment, and the duo has made a number of small cameos in various Ratchet and Clank video games.
04:03It was a fun nod to fans to bring Daxter into the film as well.
04:07Fascinating.
04:08Yeah. I crashed on Veldin when I was just a baby.
04:11No notes, no message, no name.
04:15Huh. Kind of like you.
04:16Number 16. Veteran NASCAR Racers. Cars 3.
04:21In this third installment of the Cars franchise, Lightning McQueen finds himself becoming obsolete as he faces a new generation of racers.
04:28This film was a treat for NASCAR fans because so many of their racing favorites cruised in for a cameo.
04:34Oh, I think we're in for a treat today.
04:36These racers are...
04:37Oh, hey McQueen!
04:38Win one for us old guys.
04:40Huh.
04:40Will do, Jeff.
04:42Daryl Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, and Richard Petty, who made appearances in the previous Cars films, reappear for this final installment.
04:49Petty's son Kyle also joined in on the fun.
04:52Great win today, Kyle.
04:53Thank you, Shannon.
04:54It was a great win.
04:55I was...
04:56Hey!
04:56Hey!
04:57Tito!
04:58It's not.
04:59Ah-ha.
05:00Laugh it up.
05:01Real fun.
05:02But why stop there?
05:03The movie also included cameos from Chase Elliott, Bubba Wallace, Daniel Suarez, and Ryan Blaney, who all took on automotive avatars and had their motorized moment.
05:14Maybe it's best he doesn't even show up, you know, after how last season ended.
05:18McQueen's still not here?
05:20Didn't he pull this in his rookie year?
05:22At least that's what my grandfather told me.
05:23Number 15.
05:25Steven Spielberg.
05:26We're back.
05:27A Dinosaur Story.
05:28Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park ramped up pop culture's obsession with dinosaurs back in the early 90s.
05:34Spielberg's own Amblimation studio hoped to catch a ride on the film's T-Rex tails with this family-friendly time-traveling adventure.
05:41Everybody, I'd like you to meet my new friend, Cecilia Nuthatch.
05:45The name's Rex.
05:46Nice to meet you.
05:47A pleasure, Rex.
05:49Very nice to meet you.
05:49And I'm Dweeb.
05:51Unfortunately, the savage live-action dinos were much more popular than their singing animated counterparts,
05:57and the movie flopped at the box office.
05:59Although its reception was lackluster, the film did provide a fun cameo.
06:03When the dinosaurs make a musical appearance at a parade, the spectators eventually panic.
06:08In the crowd, there is a dead ringer for Spielberg himself.
06:13We'll meet you at the circus in Central Park.
06:15Now run!
06:16As he runs for his life, you can see him wearing a hat for Amblimation studio.
06:22Number 14.
06:23Sid Phillips, Coco.
06:25In Toy Story, Sid Phillips was the toy-torturing next-door neighbor of Woody's owner, Andy.
06:30Yes!
06:32I've always wanted to put a spaceman into orbit.
06:36In the third film, a long-haired older Sid is seen working as a garbage collector.
06:40We know it's him because of the distinctive skull t-shirt he still wears.
06:44That's also how you can recognize him during his supposedly brief appearance in Coco.
06:49After traveling to the land of the dead, Miguel enters a talent competition to get the attention of the famous Ernesto.
06:58One of his fellow competitors is a skeletal musician wearing that black shirt with the white skull that we know so well.
07:14Number 13.
07:15Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, The Incredibles.
07:19Right from the earliest days of Disney Studios, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston were part of the animating team.
07:25We were all trying to do something that expressed the inner feelings of the character for that particular thing and how it related to other characters.
07:35From Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 through The Fox and the Hound in 1981, they both contributed to the creation of some of animation's most beloved characters.
07:45The two were part of Disney's nine old men, and so their cameo in The Incredibles is an absolute blast.
07:52When the Parr family and Frozone defeat Syndrome's omnidroid, the crowd hails them as heroes.
07:57To one side, two older gentlemen, who are the spitting image of the animators, make some on-point comments about the superiority of going old school.
08:06See that?
08:07Yeah, that's the way to do it.
08:10That's old school.
08:11Yeah?
08:12Number 12.
08:13Scar, Hercules.
08:16During his rise to fame, Hercules faced many destructive beasts.
08:25One of these beasts was the Nemean lion.
08:27To celebrate his victory, he poses for a painting, wearing the skin of said lion.
08:31But if you look closer, that pelt seems awfully familiar, doesn't it?
08:35That's right.
08:36It's none other than our favorite two-faced feline, Scar from The Lion King.
08:40I told you, don't move!
08:43Remember Zazu's snarky comment about what Mufasa should do with Scar?
08:47It looks like after Scar's death, someone at Disney decided to make good use out of his remains.
08:51It's a hilarious Easter egg.
08:53Plus, it's nice to see that Scar has found a new calling.
08:55This stuff doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere.
08:58You can't give up now. I'm counting on you.
09:02Number 11.
09:03Old-Aged Harley Quinn.
09:04Batman Beyond.
09:06Return of the Joker.
09:07Based on the animated series Batman Beyond, this film set a new Joker's gang against Bruce Wayne's protege, Terry McGinnis.
09:14However, old rivalries return, as Bruce suspects that Joker isn't as dead as he'd been led to believe.
09:20Can't be.
09:22Oh no, your old eyes do not deceive you, Brucey.
09:26After all, who'd know me better than you?
09:29Another presumed deceased villain also shows up in a great cameo at the end of the film.
09:34The Dee Dee twins, members of the Joker's gang who were apprehended, are bailed out of jail by their grandma.
09:39Delia and Deidre Dennis, your grandmother has paid your bail and you're being released into her custody pending your trial.
09:46Oh joy.
09:47Fans were delighted to see an elderly but still spry Harley Quinn enter their jail cell.
09:53Despite what was considered a fatal fall, the still sassy Quinn survived to raise a couple of grandkids.
09:59You rotten little scamps.
10:01I struggle to make a good home for you and this is the thanks I get.
10:05Ow!
10:06Break a grandmother's heart.
10:08I hope they throw the book at you.
10:09For the first time in forever, the doors to the castle are opening for Elsa's coronation and everyone is going to be there, including two unexpected guests.
10:29Please don't freak out.
10:34If you look closely when Anna's singing her tune, you'll notice the backs of what looked like Rapunzel and Flynn Rider from Tangled.
10:41It'd seem that after their wedding, the pair traveled all the way from Corona to celebrate Elsa becoming a queen.
10:46Nathan Greno, the co-director of Tangled, was caught off guard by their cameo as well,
10:51later receiving confirmation from someone behind the scenes that it really was them.
10:54Unexpected, sure, but this is hardly the strangest cameo Disney's pulled off involving these films.
11:00Woohoo!
11:01Best day ever!
11:05Number 9. Captain Jack Skellington, James and the Giant Peach.
11:09Can you please make way for a very special guy?
11:12One man Jack is king of a pumpkin patch.
11:15Everyone fails to be a pumpkin king.
11:18Jack Skellington has quite the impressive resume.
11:21First the pumpkin king and later a pirate captain.
11:23When Mr. Centipede dives down into a sunken shipwreck to find a compass,
11:27he comes face to face with the swashbuckling pumpkin king.
11:31Unfortunately for Centipede, Jack isn't giving up his compass without a fight.
11:35So he and his undead crew prepare to exterminate the thieving invertebrate.
11:42A skellington?
11:44Miss Spider and James come to rescue Centipede.
11:47And while Jack puts up a good fight, he is no match for a bug with eight legs.
11:51While the scene may have been short, it was still a real treat to see the pumpkin king in pirate garb.
11:56Enough of a treat to inspire pirate Jack merchandise.
12:04Number 8. Sigourney Weaver, Finding Dory.
12:07Any fish that swims into Morro Bay, California is greeted with the comforting voice of Sigourney Weaver,
12:21welcoming them to the Marine Life Institute.
12:23To the fish and various aquatic creatures, she's a friendly presence.
12:27But to everyone else, she's simply a recording booming throughout the Institute,
12:31sometimes at the most unexpected moments.
12:33What lies before you represents the third and final part of the Marine Life Mission.
12:39In a way, it all fits.
12:41Weaver's had experience narrating nature documentaries,
12:44and has worked with Pixar before in WALL-E.
12:46The best friend.
12:49But the idea remains an admittedly random one.
12:52It originated as a joke idea that the director thought would never make it into the final product,
12:57until it did.
12:59Dory, there you are!
13:00Guys, I found help. Sigourney Weaver's going to tell us where we are.
13:03Look out!
13:04Number 7. Tom Hanks, The Simpsons Movie.
13:07Tell some I here, Mr. Hanks.
13:09Sure thing, son.
13:12No, we're not talking about Odomshank this time.
13:15We're talking about the genuine article, Tom Hanks.
13:18A corrupt environmental agent has plans for Springfield.
13:21More specifically, a plan to wipe it off the map.
13:23He produces a commercial revealing his plan to blow it up and turn it into a second Grand Canyon.
13:28And Tom Hanks himself is the whimsical narrator for the ad.
13:32That's where Springfield is!
13:34It's nowhere near where anything is or ever wants.
13:37What makes this particular cameo so hilarious,
13:39is that given Tom Hanks' reputation as the nicest guy in Hollywood,
13:43no one would expect him to go along with something this crooked.
13:46Then again, maybe that's what makes him the perfect fit.
13:49You can get away with almost anything, if you have the right endorsement.
13:52This is Tom Hanks saying, if you're going to pick a government to trust, why not this one?
14:09Sausage Party has some pretty colorful musical moments,
14:12but this one really takes the cake.
14:14After the dispute over the Great Beyond forces Frank and Brenda to break up,
14:18we cut to a sad, suggestive montage set to the tune of Meatloaf's I'd Do Anything For Love.
14:23The kicker is that it actually features Meatloaf as a singing Meatloaf.
14:28Facial structure and all.
14:30I would do anything for love.
14:34I'll never lie to you and that's a fact.
14:40They don't even try to hide that it's him,
14:42as they later have him spoofing his Bat Out of Hell album cover.
14:45It's a seriously bizarre tribute to a great musician,
14:48but hey, Meatloaf is willing to do just about anything for love.
14:52So why not do this?
14:59After the less than stellar live-action film from the 90s,
15:07Nintendo waited 30 years to give the silver screen another shot at the Super Mario Brothers.
15:11The creators of the new film made fans happy by sticking to the original feel of the games.
15:16They also included as many Nintendo cameos as possible.
15:23If you're checking out the guests at Bowser's wedding,
15:28you'll see King Boo and King Bob-omb.
15:30A pack of Yoshis can also be seen running through the Mushroom Kingdom,
15:33and an egg makes an unexpected return in the credits.
15:36Truly devoted fans may have also pinpointed the voice of Charles Martinet.
15:40He voiced the original Mario and Luigi in the games,
15:44and played their father and a man named Giuseppe in the film.
15:47What about the accents?
15:48Is it too much?
15:49Too much?
15:51It's perfect!
15:52Woohoo!
15:53Number 4.
15:54Stan Lee.
15:55Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse.
15:58I'm going to miss him.
16:01Yeah.
16:02We were friends, you know.
16:04Can I return it if it doesn't fit?
16:06It always fits.
16:08Eventually.
16:09A Marvel movie, even an animated one,
16:12is incomplete without a Stan Lee appearance.
16:15Just look at his reveal as Fred's superhero father in Big Hero 6.
16:19Son.
16:21Dad.
16:24Stan Lee once again lent his voice to a cartoon depiction in 2018's Into the Spider-Verse,
16:29and pops up several times.
16:31It's hard to miss Miles getting a pep talk from Stan the Salesman,
16:34but he can also be seen walking over him when Miles is having a decidedly grounded moment,
16:39and again on a train as Miles thwips by.
16:42Lee additionally voices J. Jonah Jameson in that hysterical post-credits scene.
16:46Considering Stan Lee passed away just a month before this film's release,
16:49getting to see the Spider-Man co-creator for even just a fleeting few moments was a welcome sight.
16:53Mickey Mouse has a history of finding his way into Disney movies,
17:11be it in the form of his silhouette in the background,
17:13or sneaking his way into a song.
17:15But appearing alongside Looney Tunes legend Bugs Bunny,
17:18that's an iconic moment.
17:20The Toons are parachuting together in Toontown,
17:22when private detective Eddie Valiant drops in,
17:24hoping they have a spare.
17:26Here's the spare.
17:31Ah, no!
17:34Mickey is more friendly, while Bugs is a bit of a stinker.
17:38Not the most expected meetup to be sure,
17:40but having these two animated idols together on screen
17:42is representative of the major components of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
17:46Toons from different animation studios coming together to entertain and make us smile.
17:50Aw, poor fella.
17:52Yeah, ain't I a stinker.
17:54Number 2.
17:55Various historical and pop culture figures.
17:58The Lego Movie Franchise.
17:59Good morning, Steve!
18:01The whole Lego universe was handmade by elite builders dubbed Master Builders.
18:06The Master Builders consist of some of the greatest artists,
18:09heroes, pop cultural and historical icons of all time in minifigure form.
18:14These include, but are not limited to,
18:16Batman, The Justice League, William Shakespeare,
18:18Abe Lincoln, The Statue of Liberty, Shaquille O'Neal, voiced by himself.
18:21It's game time.
18:26Y'all ready for this?
18:29Oh, no!
18:30They were ready for that.
18:31Even the Star Wars clan gets into the act.
18:33Though they're some of the greatest figures in history,
18:35they all sadly struggle to recognize the true hero of the story,
18:39the admittedly ordinary Emmett.
18:41And that's just the first film.
18:43Batman's Lego Movie stepped things up a notch.
18:45And the Lego Movie sequel took things further with the likes of Scooby-Doo's Velma,
18:49Bruce Willis,
18:50a couple of professional basketball players,
18:52and even some friendly faces from the first movie.
18:55Yo, what's up, GL?
18:56I see you, boy.
18:57Hey, oh, here comes Lex with the smoothies.
18:59Who wants a mango berry blast?

19:152012's Wreck-It Ralph knocked it out of the park
19:35with exciting, entertaining storytelling
19:37and enough video game references to make a superfan's head spin.
19:40We were treated to the crossover to end all crossovers,
19:43at least we thought,
19:44in the Bad Anon support group sequence.
19:47You want Clyde the Pac-Man ghost,
19:49Sonic the Hedgehog's Dr. Robotnik,
19:51Super Mario Bros. Bowser,
19:53Street Fighter's Zangief and M. Bison?
19:55Yep, all there.
19:57Now let's close out with the bad guy affirmation.
20:02But then the 2018 sequel happened
20:05and reminded everyone that Disney owns everything we love.
20:08At the Oh My Disney Pavilion on the internet,
20:10you can spot Iron Man, Buzz Lightyear,
20:13Kermit, R2-D2
20:14and even super niche characters
20:16like Humphrey the Bear and the Ranger.
20:18That's not even counting those epic Disney princess scenes.
20:21Oh, right.
20:21And a Stan Lee cameo.
20:23Seriously, watch this movie at half speed.
20:27Sorry, mister!
