00:00Old phrases we still use today and where they originated from.
00:03In the early 1800s, rich people would often host dinner parties.
00:07If anybody at the party upset the host for any given reason,
00:10then the host would serve the unwanted guest a cold piece of meat,
00:14which was a polite way of telling them they are no longer welcome.
00:17This piece of meat was usually a shoulder,
00:20hence why we give the cold shoulder to somebody we would like to dismiss.
00:24In the 16th century, the popular nursery rhyme called
00:27Hey Diddle Diddle originated in England.
00:29In the rhyme it features a cow jumping over the moon as an expression of achievement,
00:33so in times of joy people would refer back to this rhyme by saying they were
00:37over the moon.
