GROWING up Destinee, 20, never realised being born with a limb difference would make her stand out from other people. It was in her first year of kindergarten that the bullying started, which continued throughout school, having a huge impact on her confidence and self image. In January 2020, Destinee began making videos online, which started gaining people’s attention. To her surprise she received lots of positive messages, particularly from people with the same disability. The response completely changed her outlook and helped her to begin embracing her difference. She uses humour in her videos to challenge stereotypes and assumptions surrounding disabilities, which has brought her 800+ followers on TikTok. Destinee told Truly: “I like to make content that shows people with disabilities can lead regular lives!" There was a point in her life where she was self conscious of her arm and dating, but not anymore. Destinee identifies as pansexual and is open to all genders and sexualities - will her blind date be as open minded?

00:00I was born with a birth defect basically where the limb stops growing while
00:05you're developing. There was a phase where I would like only wear long sleeves
00:10like no matter the weather but now it doesn't play a role at all. I wouldn't
00:16be the person I am today if it wasn't because of my disability. So today I'm
00:20going on a blind date. That should be interesting.
00:23How is it like living with part of an arm?
00:30So today I'm going on a blind date. I'm kind of looking for something long term
00:35just because it's about to be cuddle season so you know something long term
00:41would be nice. I was born with a birth defect basically where the limb stops
00:48growing while you're developing. I never really let it stop me though within my
00:53life. I know I wouldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't because of my
00:57disability. There was a phase where I would like only wear long sleeves like
01:03no matter the weather but now it doesn't play a role at all. I was kind of raised
01:09to like not think of my disability as something that holds me back. I just kind
01:13of wear whatever I want. I actually don't even know the gender of the person who's
01:18turning up so that should be interesting. I identify as pansexual. I love the person
01:24for who they are. I don't really look for gender. My name's Nate. I'm pretty new to
01:28the area. I've been here for about nine months. I really don't know anything about
01:32my date. It's just completely blind so I'm just excited to meet someone new.
01:36Hi. How you doing? That's me. Awesome. I'm Nate. I feel like someone I would date would
01:42have to have a good sense of style because I mean I like to take pictures so like we
01:47have to look decent. Tell me about yourself. I am a tiktoker. Okay. I spend a lot of time
01:53creating content for tiktok. Basically just showing how people with disabilities can live
01:59regular lives. How do you explain your content? So it's like disability humor. I guess you
02:07would say light of the situation. I have like one of me trying to open a door with my little
02:11hand and it was, you know, people loved it. It honestly like warms my heart. I see some
02:15messages from like little kids that say like, I have an arm just like yours and I look up
02:21to you. I never really had that as a kid so just knowing that I'm that for like a lot
02:26of people is so heartwarming to me. Excuse me for a moment. I feel like the conversation
02:32flows nicely, you know. The humor's coming. I thought he's cute. I think he's tall. Yeah,
02:38he's taller than me. Kind of had to like look up to him when he hugged me so that was a plus.
02:44In a dating partner, I'm looking for someone who can make me laugh. My humor can be a little
02:49dark. Like I make a lot of jokes about my disability so if someone is not like uncomfortable by that
02:56and kind of can laugh with me would be great. How is it like living with part of an arm?
03:02So, yeah, living with part of an arm is, it's fun. It's different. It kind of makes me adapt a lot,
03:12kind of see things differently. You talk about it as if it's been recent that this is a thing, right?
03:20No? Recent as of like 20 years ago. 20 years ago, really? Okay, so I noticed like some stitches
03:28or whatever on there. No, those are little fingers. Oh, yeah. So no, like 20 years ago,
03:34like I was born this way. Yeah. Yeah, no. Those are where like fingers were trying to grow. Okay.
03:39And they said, never mind. Well, this was fun. Yeah, this was fun. Um, are you ready to get going?
03:47Yeah, I guess so. Yeah.
03:48Would you want to see each other again, do you think?
03:51Um, it's possible. Yeah, it's always definitely going to be possible.
03:56First blind date, success, right? It was. Yeah. I think it's successful. Yeah.
04:00We'll do it again.
04:02Another blind one? I know. As soon as I said it, I was like, wait, she'll think of somebody else.
04:08Like, that's not what I meant. That's funny. Yeah.
04:12It was really enjoyable to meet someone. I personally want to get her contact information,
04:16definitely talk again. I think that would be really cool. You know, a possible second date.
04:21Who knows? He also was like really cool about my arm, which I liked. So that was a plus.
04:26Um, I think it went really good. Hopefully, we're going to like, um, share contact. So we'll see
04:31where it goes. It was a pleasure meeting you. All right. Um, I'll catch you later.
04:37That was so much fun.
