00:01Hello friends!
00:02Do you know what is the fastest way to become popular?
00:04To create a mystery around your own self, of course!
00:07Obviously you need talent, we don't argue with that, but there's just a crazy amount
00:11of incredibly talented people in the world.
00:13If you want to stand out among them and be remembered by the audience, you need to hide
00:17your identity, just like the heroes of our today's video.
00:20The audience is terribly intrigued by who is hiding behind the mask.
00:24They're wondering, discussing it with their friends, on the internet, and voila, you're
00:28famous!
00:29Today, we're going to tell you about popular musicians whose identity has long been hidden
00:33under a mask.
00:34Let's get it on!
00:41Marshmello
00:43The rise to fame of this American DJ composing electronic dance music was extremely short.
00:48In 2015, he posted his first track on SoundCloud, and in 2017, he was already among top 10 DJs
00:54of the world, according to DJ Magazine.
00:56There's no doubt Marshmello is incredibly talented, but we're sure that this sweet mask was crucial
01:01in it.
01:02There were a lot of versions of who was hiding behind the mask.
01:04However, after some time, people agreed on the opinion that Marshmello was none other
01:09than American DJ Christopher Comstock, better known as Dotcom.
01:12They both play similar music, they have the same music manager, and internet users that
01:16have seen their pictures say that Dotcom and Marshmello wear very similar tattoos on their
01:21legs.
01:22Another proof is that during one interview, Skrillex got a call.
01:25The display showed, Chris, and Skrillex said, hey Marshmello.
01:30Oh, Marshmello.
01:32Deadmau5
01:33Unlike Marshmello, this musician didn't try too hard to hide his identity, but the story
01:37of why he wears a mask is very interesting.
01:40But let's talk about everything in order.
01:42Deadmau5 is a Canadian DJ.
01:44Over 20 years of his career, people really loved him.
01:46He even received six nominations for a Grammy Award.
01:49His real name is Joel Thomas Zimmerman, and during his concerts and public events, he wears
01:54a funny mask of a mouse with huge ears.
01:56The history of his alias started when Joel, being a teenager, found a dead mouse in his
02:01computer.
02:02Because of this incident, friends have started to call Joel that Deadmau5 guy, but he was
02:06not upset.
02:07Instead, he reduced the nickname to Deadmau5, familiar to us today.
02:11Having fun with this idea, Zimmerman created the original logo with the mouse, just for himself,
02:16and then he came up with the idea of using a mask to create his character.
02:20Daft Punk
02:22If you say you've never heard anything about this French electronic duo, we will never believe
02:26you.
02:27After all, Daft Punk's music career began in 1993.
02:30More than once, their singles became worldwide hits, topped the charts and ratings.
02:34The duo can boast seven Grammys and many nominations.
02:41During performances and various public events, the duo always appears in shiny helmets.
02:48There's so little photos of how the musicians look without helmets, that the identity of
02:52the actors even became a meme.
02:54In fact, the musicians are called Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homen Cristo.
02:59They don't even hide the fact that helmets are an important and intriguing part of their
03:03characters.
03:04During an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Bangalter admitted that they are very interested
03:07in the line between the fictional and the real, so they decided to create fictional characters
03:12who would exist in the real world.
03:14Interestingly, although initially the helmets were intended as a conceptual move, today they
03:18have a practical use for the musicians.
03:20No one knows what they look like, so in daily life they don't have to hide.
03:24Mike Candies Of course, the Swiss DJ Mike Candies can't
03:29boast of the glory of Daft Punk or Marshmello.
03:31However, his integral part is around Yellowhead, so we had to include him into our list.
03:36When you see Mike Candies, in real life known as Michael Cole, you cannot help but feel like
03:40you're seeing an emoji man.
03:42At first, the musician was known mostly in Europe.
03:45But in 2010, his single, Together Again, won him world recognition.
03:49According to Mike, he always sought to create not just music, but a whole show.
03:56So that people remember Mike, he came up with the idea to compliment his character with a
04:01mask.
04:02He tried a variety of options, from dragons to aliens, and eventually settled on a smiley face.
04:07Kazette
04:08Swedish duo called Kazette became famous mostly because of the style of their live performances.
04:13When the DJs go on stage, they put on the head.
04:16What do you think?
04:17The musicians who hide under the pseudonym are Alexander Bjorklund and Sebastian Furrer.
04:28It's interesting that it's mostly DJs playing electronic dance music who perform in masks.
04:33There must be some kind of reason for it.
04:35What do you think it is?
04:36Tell us in the comments.
04:37Well, that's it for today.
04:47Bye.
04:48Bye!
04:49Seriously.
04:52Bye.
