China will charge U.S. ships extra port fees per voyage from October 14, targeting vessels owned and operated by the U.S. or flying the American flag.
Transcript
00:00China will charge new fees on U.S. ships docking at its ports in a tit-for-tat move in response to a similar American policy.
00:09Starting 14 October, U.S. vessels will pay 400 yuan, or about $56, per net ton per voyage.
00:17Their fees will also apply to vessels built in the United States or flying the American flag.
00:23China's Transport Ministry called the move a countermeasure to similar American charges with the fees set to rise gradually over the coming years.
00:33Starting 14 October, vessels built in China or operated by Chinese companies will also face a flat fee of $80 per net ton per voyage when calling at American ports.
00:45The U.S. fees on China-linked vessels are part of a broader push to revive American shipbuilding and curb China's commercial and naval strength.
00:55China has become the world's top shipbuilder over the past two decades, with its largest shipyards handling both commercial and military projects.
