00:02Today, I will show you an action, adventure, fantasy film from 2009 titled Daybreakers.
00:09Spoilers ahead, watch out and take care!
00:13In the year 2019, a little girl writes a letter where she describes how she will never change
00:17or grow up, which she can't take anymore.
00:19She leaves the house to watch the sun rise, and when she looks up, we see her yellow eyes.
00:24She's a vampire.
00:25As soon as the sun comes up, her entire body burns.
00:28Then we're shown the world is empty during the day.
00:30Because of a plague caused by an infected bat in 2009, most of mankind has become vampires.
00:36The human population is plummeting, and researchers are starting to look for blood substitutes
00:40to keep the vampire population fed, while a small group of them fight for human rights
00:44since they are being hunted and farmed.
00:46When night falls, the world comes alive again.
00:48We see vampires go on their normal lives as humans used to do, hanging out or going to
00:53work.
00:54There's even a hobo vampire begging for blood that threatens a random citizen.
00:57The police electrocute him for it.
00:59Meanwhile, taking his car and then the subway for work is our protagonist, Edward Dalton.
01:04He works as a hematologist for Bromsley Marks, a pharmaceutical company and important blood
01:08supplier.
01:09After going through security at the building's entrance, Edward passes by the rooms with the
01:13machines that farm humans, which he hates, before going to his lab.
01:17He's working on trying to find a blood substitute, but his latest try is also a failure.
01:21Afterward, he has a meeting with his boss, Charles Bromley, his lab partner, Christopher Caruso,
01:26a commissioner, and an army officer.
01:29The commissioner informs them of the results of the experiment they've conducted on a
01:32death row inmate.
01:33He was selected for a study on the effects of blood deprivation.
01:37The lack of blood caused a complete degeneration of the brain's frontal lobe.
01:40The first signs of it were his ears getting longer.
01:42He quickly deteriorated into a Nosferatu-like creature with no rationality or emotions.
01:47They call these creatures subsiders, and they're becoming a problem on the streets.
01:51Only 5% of the human population is left, and if they don't find a substitute soon,
01:56they will all become subsiders.
01:58Bromley cuts in and takes Edward to his office for a private meeting, where Edward ignores
02:01the coffee with blood he's served while Bromley tells him his story.
02:05He used to have cancer, but vampirism cured him.
02:08His daughter refused to turn though, and she ran away.
02:10He knows Edward pities humans and so does he, that's why they need to begin the testing
02:14as soon as possible to save the human race.
02:17Edward goes to his lab and discusses this with Christopher, who after some hesitation
02:21points out that the substitute is working on a monkey, so it's time to move on beyond
02:25animal testing.
02:26Moments later, the researchers begin the test while Bromley and some officers watch through
02:31a window.
02:32Edward slowly injects a substitute into a private's body, who at first feels fine, but once the
02:36whole dose is in, he pukes and starts convulsing as nasty blisters appear all over his body.
02:42The researchers immediately move to hold him down, and inject him with epimony, which
02:46does stop his shaking and makes the blisters disappear.
02:49But a second later, his whole body explodes.
02:52Later that night, Edward leaves the office and drives home.
02:55He's watching the news on his car, which talks about riots related to blood rationing schemes,
03:00when he notices something wrong while scratching his ear.
03:02He opens his camera mirror and checks, his ears are starting to grow long.
03:06This distraction causes him not to see the car coming from the opposite direction.
03:10He manages to dodge at the last second and stops his vehicle, but the other car crashes
03:14against a fence.
03:16Edward comes out to help and takes an arrow to the arm.
03:18The people getting out of the other car are humans, and their leader, Audrey Bennett, has
03:23a crossbow to defend themselves from vampires.
03:25Suddenly, police cars can be heard approaching them, so Edward swears he just wants to help
03:30and ask the humans to get in his car, which they accept after some hesitation.
03:34Edward activates the car's daytime protection driving mode, which turns all the windows black,
03:39then takes out the arrow from his arm as the police arrive.
03:42While he lies to them and tells them which direction the humans ran to, Audrey finds Edward's
03:46ID badge and learns his occupation.
03:49After the police are gone, the humans get out of the car, and Audrey wishes Edward a happy
03:53birthday as they all leave.
03:55Moments later, Edward is arriving at home, where a community announcement is warning everyone
03:59of the oncoming sunrise.
04:01Once he makes it to his house, he has dinner and starts taking care of his plants, when
04:05he suddenly receives a visit from his brother, Frankie Dalton, who he hasn't seen in months
04:09because he joined the army.
04:11Frankie comments on the lack of birthday party, to which Edward replies that he's turned 35
04:1510 times already, but Frankie doesn't care.
04:17He thinks that they must celebrate, and for that, he brought an expensive bottle of 100% pure
04:22human blood.
04:24He pours two glasses as he teases his brother for drinking pig blood, but Edward turns it down.
04:29This enrages Frankie, who starts an old argument of theirs.
04:32Edward doesn't touch human blood, but still works for a company that farms people, which
04:36he sees as a necessary evil to be able to find a substitute, yet he also looks down on
04:40Frankie for hunting humans for the army.
04:43Edward suddenly grabs the blood bottle and starts pouring it down the drain, but Frankie
04:47takes it from him and smashes it against the wall before trying to leave.
04:50He can't however, because a subsider gets in his way.
04:54The creature enters the kitchen and starts licking the blood off the walls, then moves onto the
04:57glass on the table.
04:59Frankie grabs a knife from the holder, which startles the subsider and makes it push him
05:03against the wall.
05:04He falls on a glass table and loses consciousness for a few seconds.
05:07The subsider moves towards Edward next, and he keeps it at bay with a stool while calling
05:12out his brother's name.
05:13Frankie wakes up and retrieves the knife.
05:15Together, the brothers try to attack the subsider, but it jumps away to hang from the ceiling.
05:20This allows Frankie to slash at it a few times before decapitating it.
05:24Two minutes later, the police arrive to take the case, commenting on the fact that the subsiders
05:28are in the suburbs now.
05:29One of the officers finds a ring on the creature, which makes Edward realize it was a local gardener.
05:34She also finds self-inflicted wounds.
05:37Feeding on themselves speeds up the mutation.
05:39The next morning, Edward is woken up by a security alert.
05:43He goes to check and when turning on the lights, he finds Audrey pointing a crossbow at him.
05:47She tells him that they've been looking for vampires they can trust and that they need his help
05:51to find another way besides the substitute.
05:53She also gives him a sheet of paper with a map on it.
05:56Edward is suddenly distracted by a noise and turns around, allowing Audrey to silently leave.
06:01When he checks on the noise, it turns out to be Frankie who asks Edward about the woman.
06:06Edward replies it's nothing.
06:07Later at night, the news shows investors are pulling their human supplies from Bromley's.
06:12Edward goes to work and meets with his boss to ask for a guarantee that the substitute
06:16would replace the need for human supply.
06:18Audrey replies that the majority of the population will be happy with it, but a small sector will
06:23always demand the real thing.
06:25Edward reminds him that that would include Bromley's daughter before going back to his
06:28lab to stare at the map.
06:30When morning comes, Edward doesn't return home.
06:32He puts up the light protection on his car and follows the map into the countryside, where
06:37Audrey is already waiting for him and tells him to approach a big tree.
06:40He parks under the shadow of that tree and after putting on his hat and sunglasses, he leaves
06:45the car.
06:46Always being careful not to step into the light, he approaches an old man, Lionel Elvis Cormac.
06:51This man used to be a vampire, yet he's human now.
06:54Edward wants to know how, but they're interrupted by Audrey coming closer, held at gunpoint by
06:59Frankie.
07:00Edward wants to stop him but Frankie won't listen, an army backup is already arriving.
07:04Audrey pushes Frankie into the sunlight and joins the men.
07:07They take Edward's car because the soldiers have already opened fire and destroyed Lionel's
07:11vehicle.
07:12They are chased and shot at as they drive away, which creates holes in the car's dark protection.
07:17At first, Audrey manages to cover them with her hands, but they become too many and the
07:21camera is shot as well, so Edward can't see ahead.
07:24Lionel takes over the wheel so he can see the road through a hole and Edward can hide from
07:28the light.
07:29When they reach a dingy bridge, Lionel drives as fast as possible to cross it safely, but
07:33the military truck is too heavy and the bridge breaks under it, causing the truck to explode.
07:38The rest of the backup is left behind without a way to follow.
07:41After night falls, they park next to a river and Lionel tells Edward his story.
07:46He used to work on daylight modifications for cars and had one of the first shops in town
07:50that made them.
07:51Daylight driving is amazing because there are no other people around, but it can also be
07:55dangerous for the driver.
07:57That's what happened to Lionel.
07:58He wasn't feeling well because he hadn't fed, so he accidentally crashed the car against
08:02the river fence.
08:03The crash ejected him from the car and he caught on fire before falling into the river.
08:07When he came out of the river, he was human again.
08:10Lionel and Audrey want Edward to recreate these conditions safely.
08:14Back at the company, Bromley's staring at some pictures of his daughter when Frankie
08:17arrives to see him.
08:19Bromley congratulates him on having reported what happened and tells him that if Edward
08:22returns immediately, no formal charges will be laid.
08:26Frankie accepts to do anything Bromley asks of him.
08:28Meanwhile, Edward and the humans are back in his car, driving to their safe house.
08:33Edward can't stop staring at Audrey's neck.
08:35When she notices this and his pointy ears, she cuts her hand and pours some blood into
08:39a cup for him to drink.
08:40He refuses at first, but Audrey needs to know that the other humans will be safe around him,
08:45so he accepts the cup and drinks it.
08:47A few hours later, they make it to a very old vineyard, where Edward meets other humans
08:51including Jarvis, who is leading a group of rescuers to find more humans.
08:56After entering the house, he also meets Senator Wes Turner, a vampire politician in favor of protecting
09:01human rights and finding a cure.
09:04After briefly cutting to Bromley, watching how one of his machines has lost all its humans,
09:08and his researchers taking out a body, we are shown a coffee stand at the subway station,
09:13where a man complains about his coffee not having enough blood.
09:16The employee tells him that 5% is as much as she's allowed to serve, but the man won't
09:20take no for an answer.
09:21He steals the blood bag, and when breaking it, he splashes everyone around him, sending
09:25them into a frenzy.
09:26The people riot and attack the coffee stand to steal more blood, causing the police to
09:31arrive to electrocute them into submission.
09:34The next morning at the vineyard, Edward takes some blood from Lionel to run some tests
09:37while he asks some questions about how he felt the day became human.
09:41Edward thinks maybe the only way to treat the blood is inside the body, controlling the
09:45daylight burn.
09:46Some hours later, when he leaves the lab to take a break, most humans move away from him.
09:51Audrey comes to tell him that they may fear him, but still think he can help.
09:55Edward confesses that he didn't want to turn, but Frankie betrayed him and turned him anyway.
10:00It's then that Edward notices the fermentation tanks, and after Audrey confirms that they're
10:04airtight, they go to look at them from the inside.
10:07The tanks have air extractors that would allow them to put out a fire, and Edward decides
10:11to use them for the experiment, so they start working on the necessary modifications.
10:15Later, in the middle of the night, we see Jarvis' group on the road taking a convoy of rescued
10:20humans to the vineyard, including Bromley's daughter, Allison.
10:24When a shot gives them a flat tire, they're forced to stop their cars.
10:27They get out with their weapons ready, but the army is surrounding them, and after a short
10:31shooting exchange, all humans are knocked out.
10:33Allison manages to contact the vineyard before she falls unconscious too, so when Frankie
10:38takes the walkie-talkie from her hands, they use it to track the call and find the location
10:42of the vineyard.
10:43At the vineyard, all the humans are grabbing their things and getting into their cars, ready
10:47to follow Tuner to his safe house.
10:49But Edward wants to stay behind because there won't be another chance to recreate the experiment,
10:54so Lionel and Audrey decide to stay behind as well and help.
10:57Back at Bromley's, Allison wakes up in her father's office and grabs a knife as he arrives
11:01to see her.
11:02Allison begs for her friends' lives, but Bromley says he is happy to see her, but as he hugs
11:07her, admits he can't do anything for her friends.
11:10Allison pushes him away and runs to the door but she's knocked out by a soldier as Bromley
11:14realizes his daughter has stabbed him.
11:16When morning comes to the vineyard, the experiment is ready to start.
11:20Audrey will watch the monitors while Lionel will stay in the tank with Edward, who has
11:23the heart monitor connected to his chest and is covered by a wet blanket.
11:27The process is simple, they open a hole in the tank to let the sunlight burn Edward.
11:32Then they use the air extractor to turn off the fire.
11:34The first two tries are a failure, but they let Edward burn long enough for the third,
11:39and this time it works.
11:40Edward manages to become human again.
11:42Their happiness is interrupted by the army arriving to raid the place, but they avoid getting
11:46caught by hiding in a wine barrel.
11:49We cut to the company again, when Frankie is visiting Bromley, who is being treated for
11:53his wound.
11:54Bromley asks Frankie to do something for him, and Frankie leaves the room to see Allison
11:58in her cell.
11:59She still doesn't want to be turned, but Frankie goes ahead and bites her anyway.
12:03Back in the vineyard, the trio leaves the hiding spot after making sure it's safe.
12:07Edward goes outside and is amazed by the sunlight touching his skin without burning, while Lionel
12:11retrieves an old car of his.
12:13Meanwhile, in the company, Bromley sees how all of his machines are empty now before checking
12:18on his daughter, who is not drinking her blood rations.
12:21Bromley enters the cell and discovers she's biting herself, which will mutate her.
12:25She attacks her dad and blames him for everything before she's taken away.
12:29After the military imposes martial law so that they can freely fight the subsiders on the
12:33streets, we cut to Edward, Audrey, and Lionel, who are arriving at Tuner's cabin, only to
12:38find all the humans dead.
12:39Audrey is starting to lose hope, but Edward says he knows someone that can help.
12:43After briefly cutting to Christopher achieving a breakout at the lab, we're shown how the
12:47military is dragging the subsiders out in the sunlight for execution.
12:51Allison is among them, and watching her die makes Frankie reconsider his position.
12:55Later at night, Christopher returns to his house, where he finds the trio waiting for
12:59him.
13:00Edward tells him that he has a cure, which is better than the substitute, and asks for his
13:04help to recreate the experiment.
13:06Their talk is interrupted by the phone ringing, so Christopher leaves the room to take the
13:09call.
13:10When he takes too long to come back, they get suspicious, so Audrey goes and finds him while
13:14Edward and Lionel check his code.
13:16Turns out Christopher has left his cell phone open on a call all this time, and now everyone
13:20at the company knows where they are.
13:22The army suddenly arrives, and Audrey is knocked out and captured, but Lionel and Edward manage
13:26to escape using the subwalk tunnels.
13:29They decide to hide in an old abandoned garage, where they are attacked by a subsider.
13:32Frankie arrives then and shoots the creature before noticing his brother has become human,
13:37making him confess he only turned him because he didn't want to see him die.
13:41He admits he made a mistake and now he wants to help, but when Lionel comes closer, his
13:45thirst gets the better of him, and he jumps on the human to bite him.
13:48Edward grabs him and pushes him off Lionel.
13:51He's ready to shoot his brother but stops himself when he notices something.
13:54Moments later, we see Edward willingly enter the company building, setting off the alarms with
13:59his human condition.
14:00Security catches him and takes him to Bromley's office, who currently has Audrey bleeding on
14:04a chair and is drinking her blood.
14:06Edward tells him he regrets everything and wants to be a vampire again, upsetting Audrey
14:10with his betrayal.
14:12Bromley shows him that they finally found a substitute so he doesn't need Edward anymore
14:15and he calls him a coward.
14:17Edward says Bromley is a coward too because he couldn't turn his own daughter.
14:20Furious, Bromley bites Edward, but Edward doesn't mind.
14:24In fact, this has been his plan all along.
14:27Bromley starts transforming into a human and as Edward remembers how Frankie turned as well,
14:31he explains drinking treated vampire blood is the cure.
14:35Bromley presses an alarm to call for security, and we cut to see a bunch of army trucks arriving
14:39at the parking lot.
14:40When the soldiers leave their vehicles and approach the elevator, the doors open to reveal
14:44Bromley tied to a chair, causing the vampires to go into a frenzy and feed on him.
14:48Meanwhile, Aubrey and Edward, now armed with weapons he's found around, go downstairs and
14:53are about to leave the building when more soldiers arrive to block their way.
14:57The glass doors suddenly shatter when Frankie drives Lionel's car inside, hitting all the
15:00soldiers to save his brother.
15:02But backup immediately arrives and now they're surrounded.
15:06Frankie tells Edward to go before sacrificing himself, allowing all the soldiers to jump
15:10on him and eat him.
15:11Edward doesn't have time to grieve his death because a security guard has taken Audrey
15:15and he must rescue her.
15:16He follows them to a security room when after some struggling, Edward manages to kill two vampire
15:21guards and help Audrey kill the third.
15:23Then they watch on the security cameras how the soldiers that fed on Frankie became human,
15:28and the other vampire soldiers are now attacking them as well.
15:31A feeding massacre occurs, and by the time Edward and Audrey come back to the lobby, only a handful
15:36of human soldiers are left standing.
15:38Christopher shows up and then shoots a couple of soldiers, claiming there can't be a cure.
15:42He's about to shoot them too, when an arrow hits his chest and kills him.
15:46It came from Lionel who's arrived to help.
15:48Audrey gives him a hug while Edward watches his brother's body and the light of the rising
15:52sun slowly make its way inside.
15:54The movie ends with the trio leaving in Lionel's car, while Edward tells us that they now have
15:58the cure, and they can change everyone back.
