00:01¡Dad!
00:02¡Let's get it done!
00:10People don't realize the role that a stunt team plays on a movie.
00:16On the Avatar sequels,
00:18we rely on them to not do stunts that stand out as spectacular.
00:22We ask them to do stunts that play as part of our story's narrative.
00:26For the James Cameron film,
00:28the action fuels the story,
00:30while the story also fuels the action,
00:32and it makes it so dynamic and it makes it so engaging
00:34that it makes you want to know what happens next.
00:36Jim, of course, doesn't like things to just be animated.
00:39You're going to do them for real.
00:40The only thing we're not real is us being blue.
00:45I've got a dry team and I've got a wet team.
00:47Some of the things that we're doing are going to be 30 feet in the air,
00:50and we'll let the actors do it full on,
00:52and we'll catch their movement, their acting and everything,
00:54and then we'll build it up,
00:55and we'll let those seasoned professionals,
00:57those parkour professionals,
00:58do that same motion.
00:59Who do all the slinging, climbing, falling, grappling,
01:03the action through the air.
01:06Those guys never slip.
01:08So from fighting, falling, parkouring,
01:10we have the best in the world for each individual piece.
01:15Flying a cron is much more difficult than it ever was before.
01:18Jim wanted people jumping on, jumping off, flying around.
01:21He even wanted that bird to fly on the stage and be able to come to a landing.
01:25We have multiple riggers and stunt performers operating the bird,
01:28helping it turn left, right, circling, flying, diving.
01:32So we had to have our performers in sync with the creature.
01:37The wet team, you know, their breath holds are amazing.
01:39One of my top guys, his breath hold is like 11 minutes down there,
01:42which is ridiculous.
01:43A lot of the people that came from Cirque du Soleil synchronized swimmers,
01:46Olympic hopefuls,
01:47so they can move like you've never seen before in that water.
01:50Dude's been falling off horses the same way since Truman was president.
01:53You know, when I first was approached by Garrett,
01:55and he's like, you've got to invent some stuff,
01:57and it's probably not possible,
01:58but if anybody can figure it out,
01:59James Cameron thinks I can, so let's do it.
02:01For the water sequences in this movie,
02:02we had to figure out how to make some of these creatures fly underwater,
02:05and how are we going to do it?
02:07Are we going to use this thing called a jetivator
02:09and use underwater jets to help make it work?
02:11It was like a high horsepower squirt gun.
02:13We've got to be the first people to actually ever take it underwater.
02:16I kept getting ripped off, and Garrett's like,
02:18dude, can you stay on that thing?
02:19I'm like, yeah, I'm trying.
02:20And you're, and there goes your hand, you know, like it's so fast.
02:26Fighting underwater, what it reminds me of is
02:28if we were in the gym and we were hitting a heavy bag,
02:31and you're hitting that heavy bag as fast as you can,
02:33as many times as you can, and as hard as you can,
02:36while holding your breath, see how long you last.
02:38That's probably what your limit's going to be underwater.
02:41The final battle is amazing. It's epic.
02:43At one point, Korich and Jake have this huge knife fight
02:46while this ship is capsizing, turning, listing,
02:50and falling over on itself.
02:52We had to build this huge, trust-enabled skeleton of the ship,
02:56and we had to drive it with these computerized winches
02:58so that it was able to turn at the right time at the right speed.
03:01And this is one of the processes that makes this film feel so real,
03:04is that it was real. Now we're underwater.
03:06We're really fighting underwater.
03:08And so that's part of the process of making it real.
03:10One of the things I love about working with Jim
03:12is that he will create that environment for you.
03:14If we need real fire, there's gonna be real fire in that stage.
03:16If we need those physical things in our hands to interact with,
03:19to make it real, it will be there.
03:21This movie is not just some amazing trip into another world.
03:24It's also still a reality-based movie that's right here in your face,
03:27and that's why I love it.
03:28That's why I love it.
