00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the times that Marvel actors
00:11parody their own characters. Mild spoilers ahead, consider this your warning.
00:16Ah, where to? New York? London? Paris? Springfield? No!
00:23Number 10, Chris Evans, Free Guy. Sorry Cap, this won't kill you, but it ain't gonna tickle either.
00:33Chris Evans makes a perfectly brilliant cameo in Free Guy, and it's all thanks to a text message
00:38that Ryan Reynolds had sent to him. When Guy, Reynolds' character, is about to get hit with
00:42an all-powerful death blow from Dude, he suddenly brings out Captain America's iconic shield and
00:48blocks the punch to the tune of the Avengers theme.
00:57The movie, in all of its fourth-wall-breaking glory, cuts to the Captain America actor himself
01:02watching the whole thing live on his phone. The whole movie's got some pretty good Marvel
01:07meta jokes, and while Chris Evans appears as himself rather than Cap, it's a hilarious
01:12way to subvert his otherwise clean and honest Captain America persona.
01:15What the shit?
01:18Number 9, Jeremy Renner, Saturday Night Live.
01:20Wait, no, Hawkeye, Hawkeye, wait, you're leaving?
01:23Well, yeah, I mean, I need my arrows, it's kinda my thing, right? You guys got this.
01:27Saturday Night Live has produced multiple Marvel parody sketches, and one of the best ones is
01:32from Jeremy Renner's appearance on the show. In an Avengers sketch, Renner's Hawkeye, much
01:37like in the movies, is portrayed as just a regular guy in a super team, where he's constantly
01:42overshadowed by the powers of the likes of Thor and the Hulk.
01:47In an attempt to desperately help his teammates, he shortly realizes he's completely out of
01:55arrows. The whole thing seems a bit self-deprecating, but Jeremy's being a great sport about it
02:00and seems to lean into the Hawkeye memes.
02:03How many arrows did you bring?
02:05All of them, like eleven.
02:07Eleven?
02:08Eleven, there are a hundred thousand aliens out there.
02:11And I killed eleven of them, you're welcome.
02:15Number 8, Tobey Maguire, Spider- No Way Home.
02:18Typically, the Spider-Man movies are pretty on the nose when it comes to humor, but there's
02:23one really deep cut joke in Spider- No Way Home once we finally get the other two Spider-Men
02:28suited up on screen.
02:29Yeah, that's good.
02:31That was it.
02:32Wow.
02:33That's good.
02:34Right?
02:35That's better.
02:36Yeah.
02:37Wow.
02:38This seemingly innocuous interaction between Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Men
02:43is, first of all, definitely a reference to an old Spider-Man 2 meme that has been YouTube
02:47pooped to hell and back, in which Tobey slash Peter crash lands on a car and exclaims the
02:52famous words.
02:53My back.
02:55My back.
02:57But it doesn't end there.
02:59Tobey Maguire claimed to have back problems and used it to push for a higher salary while
03:03filming 2004's Spider-Man 2, which seemingly spawned this incredible rabbit hole.
03:08There it goes.
03:10You okay?
03:12Oh, my back.
03:147.
03:15Chris Evans, Deadpool and Wolverine.
03:17I got this.
03:20Fans were already speculating wildly thanks to rumors that Chris Evans would make a cameo
03:25in Deadpool and Wolverine, which paid off as the movie delivered the most masterful bit
03:30of self-parody with him.
03:31When he's on screen, it's easy to see him and think, oh, he's doing a Captain America
03:36cameo, which the movie leans heavily into.
03:39Only for it to be his older Marvel role as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch.
03:43You're not gonna love what happens next.
03:45Oh, my God.
03:46Oh, my God.
03:47Oh, my God.
03:48Oh, my God.
03:49Oh, my God.
03:50He's gonna say it.
03:51Oh, my God.
03:52He's gonna say it.
03:53Say what?
03:54Avengers.
03:55What now?
03:56It's the funniest way a movie ever could use an actor's previous role and a clever way
04:02to utilize Deadpool's integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
04:05You're in the void.
04:06Think of it as purgatory.
04:09Reed called it a metaphysical junkyard, where anything useless goes before it gets annihilated
04:14forever.
04:15And where the TVA sends people that don't play nice with the rest of the multiverse.
04:20Like you.
04:21And you.
04:22Number six.
04:23Scarlett Johansson.
04:24Saturday Night Live.
04:25When it came to life in the big city, Black Widow had it all figured out.
04:30Remind me to call whoever invented heels and leave them a nasty message.
04:33Scarlett Johansson has made one of the better parodies of her Marvel counterpart, Black Widow,
04:38on Saturday Night Live.
04:39During her 2015 hosting of the show, SNL aired a mock trailer for a Black Widow solo movie titled
04:44Black Widow Age of Me, which for its time was brilliant.
04:48Instead of an action-heavy spy thriller, it depicted Natasha Romanoff as the protagonist
04:52in a cheesy romantic comedy where she falls for Ultron.
04:55I don't know Black Widow.
04:56I think you're moving way too fast with this guy.
04:59Does he even know anything about you?
05:00Like that your favorite food is ice cream?
05:02Hey BW, your boyfriend is on the news.
05:07As a robot named Ultron threw a bus at the Fashion Weekly building.
05:11And I'd hate to be that guy's girlfriend.
05:14It was a healthy jab at Marvel Studios, who at the time seemed reluctant to give Black Widow
05:19her own solo movie, which she'd get six years after this sketch.
05:23It wouldn't have worked so well if Scarlett wasn't fully committed to the bit.
05:26For Black Widow, falling in love can be hard, but it can also be incredible.
05:33Where you go?
05:34Paris.
05:35France.
05:36But if you go Paris, then who help Hulk eat ice cream?
05:45Black Widow Age of Me.
05:48Number 5.
05:49Tom Hiddleston.
05:50The good, the Bart, and the Loki.
05:52We love you so much, boy.
05:55Yes, father.
05:56Oh, and tomorrow could you turn Flanders into a pork chop?
06:01I'll do the rest.
06:02In the 2021 Disney Plus short film The Good, The Bart, and The Loki, Tom Hiddleston reprises
06:07his role as the god of mischief for an awesome animated crossover.
06:11Hiddleston voiced Loki, who finds himself vanished to Springfield by Odin.
06:14He befriends Bart in attempts to navigate the quirky world of The Simpsons, making tons of
06:18sly MCU references along the way.
06:20You're not nice.
06:29Privacy, please.
06:30It's chock full of colorful Easter eggs from both universes, blended together in a way that's
06:35especially pleasing for those that are fans of both The Simpsons show and the MCU.
06:39They say these bottles are recyclable.
06:41They just fill up the ocean.
06:44Your planet is dying.
06:47Still worth it.
06:50Number four, Chadwick Boseman, Saturday Night Live.
06:53I am a big fan of this program.
06:55Well, this might be the blackest Black Jeopardy yet.
06:59Chadwick Boseman's hosting of Saturday Night Live included one of the best MCU parodies
07:04to date in a sketch where Boseman playfully channels Black Panther.
07:07In SNL's Black Jeopardy, Boseman appears as King T'Challa who, despite his regal bearing
07:12and advanced Wakandan knowledge, finds himself comically bewildered by American slang and culture.
07:18I'll stick with Finn for 400.
07:19All right.
07:20This is the reason your cable bill is in your grandmama's name.
07:24Oh, T'Challa.
07:25What is to honor her is the foundation of the family.
07:28His earnest literal interpretations of the questions keep leading him to incorrect answers.
07:37It's a fun and sweet way to gently satirize the MCU and the cultural disconnect between Wakanda and the rest of the world.
07:43Only possible thanks to Chadwick's in-character performance.
07:46Let's go to our hell now for $800.
07:50Okay.
07:51The policeman says there's been some robberies in your neighborhood and asks if you have any information.
07:58What is...
07:59Not only do I tell this man what I know, but I also assist him in tracking down the offender.
08:05After all, our ministers of law enforcement are only here to protect us.
08:10Is this correct?
08:11Is this correct?
08:123.
08:13Escape Room Ensemble
08:14Marvel Studios' Avengers Endgame Escape Room
08:17I got it.
08:18I got it.
08:19It's the clock.
08:20That'll seize all.
08:21To promote the release of Avengers Endgame, Marvel Studios produced a unique and wonderfully
08:26meta-parody in the form of an Endgame-themed Escape Room special.
08:29Benedict Cumberbatch, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, and Letitia Wright were made to recall specific
08:35movie events in order to gather the Infinity Stones and escape.
08:38But even though Benedict Cumberbatch had played Sherlock Holmes in the past, it seems Sebastian Stan will be the one to accidentally discover most of the clues instead, stumbling into the spotlight.
08:48Wait a minute.
08:49Like maybe this one.
08:50Yeah.
08:51So this is Soul.
08:52This is reality.
08:53All right.
08:54We'll just deal with that.
08:55Here.
08:56I just found another one.
08:57There you go.
08:58Damn, you're good, man.
08:59You're good.
09:00And with Joe Russo directing the heroes on comms, the whole thing comes together like a mini Avengers movie in spirit.
09:06The actors aren't playing their characters here, but the parody comes from putting them in this superhero movie type situation.
09:12Number 2.
09:13Chris Hemsworth.
09:14Saturday Night Live.
09:15I have got to give it up to those robots.
09:16They fought hard, but luckily, I'm Thor!
09:31When Thor actor Chris Hemsworth started embracing comedy roles more often, he appeared twice on Saturday Night Live in 2015.
09:38During one of his hostings, he provided a self-aware but charming parody of a hyper-enthusiastic Thor celebrating a victory in a post-battle interview sketch.
09:46Check out my podcast on SoundCloud.
09:49It's sick.
09:50It's sick, sick.
09:51All right.
09:52And I'm sorry we destroyed your city.
09:53I love my life!
09:55Woo!
09:58Comically oblivious and in full party mode, in typical Thor fashion, he had not a shred of subtlety and seemed utterly over the top.
10:06Hemsworth took everything his Marvel character was and turned it up to 11, while somehow managing to keep it all genuine.
10:12Now I'm at like an 11, I'm cranked up!
10:15Woo!
10:16Oh my goodness!

10:34Number 1.
10:35Ryan Reynolds.
10:36Deadpool franchise.
10:39Tickets for the cup.
10:40I can't wait to not watch Italy play the Netherlands.
10:43I can't stay mad at you.
10:45Healing hugs.
10:46Here we go.
10:47Oh god, finally.
10:48That feels so good.
10:49You smell amazing!
10:51The king of self-parody within the MCU is none other than the master himself, Ryan Reynolds.
10:58Not only is he a great comedian, he's got the perfect amount of material to draw on with his numerous past superhero roles, which do come into play in his jokes.
11:07The entire marketing campaign for the Deadpool films completely redefined what superhero promotion could be.
11:12Reynolds, fully in character, consistently shattered the fourth wall, directly addressing the audience, mocking Marvel, Disney, and especially his own prior, much maligned portrayal of Deadpool and X-Men Origins Wolverine.
11:33Do you agree with our picks?
