Both beloved and punished: the Istrian goat’s curious place in history

The goat remains a symbol of the identity of the Istrian region, in Croatia. It represents not only an animal but also a living monument to the Istrian culture, folklore and economy. But historically, they have not always been that beloved.

00:00At the top of one of the main castles renacentists of Istria
00:08se celebra a Pintoresco Concurso de Belleza de Cabras.
00:18This event is part of folklore and history locales
00:21and is a tourist activity very popular.
00:24However, historically, the cabras
00:26were not always appreciated in this Croatian region,
00:30the coordinator of the castle Morosini Grimani.
00:34The goat is today the symbol of Istria.
00:36It's on the emblem of Istria, on the flag of Istria
00:40and it's even on the Croatian crest, on the Croatian emblem.
00:44The goat in the Renaissance times was the forbidden animal
00:47because they were considered as the enemy of the herbs.
00:51It ate their salads.
00:54The only families who were allowed to keep the goat
00:58were the really, really poor ones,
01:00but you had to keep an eye on your animal, your goat,
01:04not to escape in the town.
01:06If they found your goat in the town,
01:08they killed the animal
01:10and you get to spend like a night or two in the prison, in the castle.
