Tenby Observer Community Kindness Awards 2025 Cllr Laurence Blackhall introduces the recipients of the Community Volunteers Award, Blake Shaw and Terry Evans, long-serving volunteers at Tenby Sailing Club
00:00All of you who know the Sailing Club well will know these two men as the pillars of the Sailing Club.
00:08In fact, Blake Shaw is Commodore this year, a job that he previously held 56 years ago.
00:17He was Secretary of the Sailing Club during the intervening period whilst doing a 40-year stint in that role.
00:24And Terry Evans, who equally has been a stalwart down the Sailing Club, anybody going down on a Wednesday night will know that Terry's barbecues are now infamous.
00:42People join the Sailing Club just so that they can access Terry's barbecues, which of course started just as something for the kids to have when they'd done the sailing training.
00:54And there's now a full menu rolling out every week to a packed Sailing Club.
01:04The Sailing for Children is an important aspect.
01:09The running of the Sailing Club itself is a major achievement that they've done for so long.
01:15But I want to just focus a little bit about the Sailing for Children.
01:19There are hundreds of children, many who are now quite a bit older, that have gone through the sailing training at the club.
01:31I was there only a couple of weeks ago with a cohort of about 40 children that had done their RYA levels 1, 2 and going through.
01:45And there are an awful lot of people that have gone through that, a lot of whom ended up serving on the lifeboat and serving in other ways, both of the lifeboat and Coast Guard as well.
02:01So it's not just something for a bit of fun for the kids, it's also something that turns into a real act of service to the community.
02:14And also just a load of people that end up enjoying sailing because of these two men.
02:20It's not hyperbole to say that the Sailing Club simply wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Blake Shaw and Terry Evans.
02:30And so for that reason, they are our Community Volunteers of the Year.
