00:00movie trailers are designed to give you an idea of the film in question
00:04in a very short space of time welcome to ms mojo and today we're exploring the evolution
00:10of movie trailers and in this house the most dire horrible events took place
00:18in 1913 lowe's theater's founder marcus lowe hired journalist nils granlund as a publicity agent
00:27after working on the touring vaudeville show hanky panky he was subsequently promoted to
00:33publicity manager of lowe's theater chain granlund had the innovative idea to shoot rehearsal footage
00:39for a musical called the pleasure seekers producing the first of many promotional films
00:44these promos were initially played after movies trailing them although they're now played before
00:50feature presentations the word trailer stuck that promo piece trailed the movie itself hence
00:57to this day we still think of them as movie trailers today studios often collaborate with
01:02marketing agencies like trailer park group to produce previews between the 1920s and the late
01:0950s though most movie trailers came from the national screen service which herman robbins founded it was
01:15promoting their films and nss the national screen service essentially carried this on almost as a
01:21monopoly until the 60s nss was also responsible for many movie posters from hollywood's golden age
01:28while nss had a monopoly on the trailer business studios eventually took more control back in the
01:35dawn of the film industry a century ago there really was no coordinated infrastructure for the
01:41marketing and promotion of the studio's films in the 1950s publicist jack atlas joined metro goldwyn
01:48mayor as a trailer editor in 1982 atlas reflected mgm was the only studio to really have its own
01:56trailer department most trailers followed a formula compared to modern previews golden age trailers had
02:02fewer quick cuts letting scenes play out all consumed by their passionate greed for the maltese falcon
02:10what have you ever given me beside money you ever given me any of your confidence any of the truth
02:16there were familiar staples like text music and narration yet the text was larger the music was
02:22more generic and the narrator sounded more like sideshow pitchmen there were also special shoot
02:28trailers where entirely new footage was shot the miracle on 34th street trailer is one example
02:34following a fictional producer trying to find the best marketing strategy for the film mr schaefer
02:40you've got a great idea naturally now i'll tell you what we do
02:51some special shoot trailers had hosts like orson wells for citizen kane walt disney for snow white and
02:58perhaps most famously alfred hitchcock for psycho which included a tour of the bates motel well the murderer
03:06you see crept in here very slowly across the showers on there was no sound it's unconventional for a
03:15director to oversee a trailer for their own films stanley kubrick wasn't a conventional filmmaker however
03:22for the doctor strange love trailer kubrick enlisted graphic designer pablo farro drawing inspiration from
03:28arthur lipset's oscar-nominated college film very nice very nice the strange love trailer was defined by
03:36its snappy editing fluids fluids the doomsday machine blaster andrew j coon a former nss employee
03:47was also taking the medium in bolder directions with trailers for movies like night of the iguana
03:54which incorporated fast edits and narration from a then unknown james earl jones one night
04:01the night of the iguana since man has known woman there has never been such a night founding kaleidoscope
04:08films coon worked on the trailers for some of hollywood's biggest movies including the first
04:13summer blockbuster jaws none of man's fantasies of evil can compare with the reality of jaws initially
04:22trailers were never meant to be seen outside of theaters with hollywood wanting to draw in larger
04:27audiences for event pictures more focus went into tv advertising tv opened the door for the home video
04:34market with vhs and future formats allowing trailers to be watched beyond theaters toys there'll be a big
04:42lettered thing up here above me glowing obviously some incredible special effect that'll go
04:47the 90s marked another major turning point for trailers the decade produced elaborate teasers for
04:56films like 1998 godzilla toys and terminated 2 judgment day the 90s also gave us numerous films that
05:04regularly had their musical scores repurposed in trailers for different movies randy edelman's dragon
05:11heart theme and david arnold's stargate theme are two examples if you can imagine a hidden place rich
05:18with all the strange beauty of your nighttime dreams then you know where i am brad pitt
05:25seven years into that not only were trailers becoming more cinematic in terms of editing and music
05:32but one voice defined the medium don lafontaine started as an audio engineer but his thunderous throat
05:39inevitably led to voiceover work while she craves a romance she can sink her claws into
05:48you're getting into a girl like me he plots a foul reign of destruction doing radio spots for dr
05:55strange love lafontaine began a professional relationship with producer floyd peterson they
06:01helped popularize the catchphrase in a world in a world where both of our cars were totally underwater
06:07we thought it would take forever to get some help but a new wind was about to blow lafontaine had been
06:14lending his voice to trailers ever since 1964's gunfighters of casa grande when the original
06:21announcer didn't show up he went on to work at kaleidoscope and paramount but it was in the 90s when
06:27lafontaine's voice blew up through trailers for movies like terminator 2 batman returns and south park
06:34bigger longer and uncut it's not just another day in the park son we accidentally replaced your heart
06:42with a baked potato you have about three seconds to live south park bigger longer and uncut funny to
06:48think how south park later parodied trailer announcers while lafontaine might have been the king of movie
06:55trailers he wasn't the only notable narrator imagine the world at your command genie i need help jasmine
07:02won't even let me talk to her no only to discover the greatest power is within no disney vhs was
07:08complete without a few previews narrated by mark elliott for jerry seinfeld's comedian hal douglas poked fun
07:16at the various overused trailer lines in a world where laughter was king uh no in a world jack
07:25what do you mean no in the world an epic voice wasn't the only way to hype up a film the trailer
07:31for the matrix had an ingenious tagline that hooked audiences no one can be told what the matrix is
07:39you have to see it for yourself the matrix was the big winner at the inaugural golden trailer awards
07:45reflecting how trailers were becoming more than just ads they were an art form in their own right
07:51the matrix won best action trailer over star wars episode one which also made a huge splash with its
07:58teaser i sense much fear in you the boy is dangerous they all sense it why can't you fear is the path to
08:06the dark side many patrons bought a ticket to meet joe black simply because the phantom menace teaser
08:13accompanied it some left after the trailer skipping the feature presentation you can see things before
08:18they happen he can help you the force is unusually strong with him he was meant to help you see spot
08:25run similarly benefited from having the first harry potter trailer the alternative was to try and watch
08:32these anticipated trailers online emphasis on try understand this harry because it's very important not
08:38all wizards are good i'm going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us
08:43killed or worse expelled she needs to saw her priorities trailers have had an online presence
08:51since 1993 when aol subscribers were granted access to previews for in the line of fire and super mario bros
09:00of course you'd have to wait hours for them to download that's not gonna happen clint eastwood
09:08in the line of fire it'd be quicker to watch meet joe black which clocked in at three hours
09:17thankfully internet speeds grew faster throughout the 2000s which also saw the rise of a video sharing
09:23platform called youtube in the 2010s there were two new norms for trailers first many of them
09:29incorporated the inception bram sound effect god's chose well second more people started experiencing
09:41trailers not in theaters but on their phones tablets and computers some trailers rake in hundreds
09:47of millions of views on youtube within their first 24 hours often predicting future box office
09:54while youtube has made the distribution of trailers more convenient something has also been lost
09:59before youtube trailers could fake us out setting audiences up for one thing only to discover
10:06something unexpected ready to wreak more havoc
10:17the rugrats movie scooby-doo and the spy who shagged me all cleverly did this with youtube though
10:23we know what the movie is going to be when we click on the thumbnail austin powers that's right mr
10:29bigglesworth we're back oh beehive narration in movie trailers has also become less common since don
10:37lafontaine died in 2008 payback this time it's for real yet john bailey has kept lafontaine's spirit
10:45alive through honest trailers youtube paved the way for other trailer parodies as well as reaction videos
10:52trailers have never received more fanfare with teasers now having even shorter teasers nature made me a freak
10:58man made me a weapon and god made it last too long some are unveiled at events like comic-con and cinema-con
11:07building anticipation before debuting online the internet has made feedback faster as well
11:12trailers for movies like sonic the hedgehog convince the studios to change course
11:21other movies like cats and snow white died with their trailers but sometimes studios make lemonade out
11:31of lemons the a minecraft movie trailer went from being universally hated to launching a million memes
11:38with big box office i am steve

12:04while trailers play a bigger role in marketing than ever they're also a source of frustration lindsey
12:11mohan james franco
12:17deception how do you have enough two guns i didn't think one would be enough pre-shows for various
12:21theaters are now 25 to 30 minutes with reserved seating more patrons are skipping the trailers and
12:28showing up late in addition to having too many trailers there are several common complaints the trailer
12:34gave away too much scenes from the trailer weren't in the finished film the movie wasn't what the
12:39trailer sold us of course this is nothing new of the beijing film festival's coveted crying monkey award
12:49satan's alley the carry trailer spoiled its climactic prom scene the casablanca trailer
12:54featured humphrey bogart saying a line that isn't in the finished film i was willing to shoot captain
12:59reno and i'm willing to shoot you all right major you asked for it it goes to show that while trailers
13:05have evolved significantly over the decades some elements never change if there's one constant it's
13:10that trailers can do their jobs too well proving better than the movie itself fun isn't something
13:16one considers from balancing the universe but this does put a smile on my face what's your favorite or
13:28least favorite movie trailer trope let us know in the comments five-time academy award winner kirk lazarus
13:36and mtv movie award best kiss winner tobey maguire
