00:00Hello everyone. Landslides in the Himalayas, chaotic streets of Vietnam,
00:07and an abandoned bridge deep in Siberian forests. Today we'll explore some of the most bizarre and
00:14unusual roads in the world. It's going to be thrilling and maybe a little scary. Buckle up,
00:20let's get it on.
00:30You need nerves of steel to tackle such a challenge. We are in the Siberian forests on
00:50the Kwandinsky Bridge, which crosses the Vitya River. Despite being used by locals and truckers
00:56for vehicle traffic, the bridge is notoriously dangerous due to its unstable structure and
01:02absence of guardrails. Typically, a guide leads the way to help drivers. To minimize wind resistance,
01:08the vehicle's windows are always rolled down. It's a dangerously thrilling experience,
01:14and to make matters worse, driving on the Kwandinsky Bridge is officially banned.
01:26That's why mountain adventures can sometimes feel like playing Russian roulette.
01:50When it comes to rock falls, you might only have a few seconds to determine your fate. These buses
02:04weren't lucky enough to avoid the collapse. Fortunately, the people managed to get off and
02:09move to a safe distance in time. The Atabad Lake project is an impressive engineering accomplishment,
02:21featuring a network of five tunnels that link China and Pakistan. These tunnels, built at 2,500 meters
02:28above sea level and extending about seven kilometers, came with a hefty price tag of 275 million dollars.
02:43The project was a response to a massive landslide in January 2010, which blocked the Hunza River and
02:50formed a new lake that flooded a section of the Karakoram Highway. The tunnels were built to provide an
02:56alternative route around the flooded area. Check out these scenes to understand the scale of the landslides in this region.
03:12Massive amounts of rock can not only wreck parts of the road, but also reshape the landscape.
03:27Massive amounts of rock can not only wreck parts of the land. Camino a Los Lungas is a road in Bolivia that
03:42connects the cities of La Paz and Coroico, but it's more widely known as the Death Road.
03:48This grim nickname is well-deserved. In the past, dozens and sometimes even hundreds of people have
04:02died here each year. Stretching just over 50 kilometers, the road climbs to an elevation of 4,650 meters at the
04:10Lucumbra Pass before descending to 1,200 meters, winding its way down steep slopes.
04:23The road here is no more than three meters wide, with no guard rails and a sheer drop below.
04:29There's hardly any asphalt either, just clay and dirt. The biggest danger is during the rainy season
04:35when visibility is poor and the water constantly erodes the road surface.
04:52The Karnali Highway in Nepal is considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world. In the spring,
04:59when the snow melts in the mountains and during the monsoon rains, long sections of the road turn
05:05into muddy channels where hundreds of vehicles get stuck. Sometimes, water can have even more
05:11dramatic effects. In this case, a mountain river changed its course due to a landslide, creating a
05:17spontaneous waterfall that cascades into a deep ravine right along the road.
05:34The Karnali Highway is famous not just for its unpredictable weather. Many sections of the road
05:39are very narrow, with a steep drop on one side and sheer cliffs on the other, always threatening
05:45landslides. Unsurprisingly, official reports state that 85% of the Karnali Highway is considered unsafe
05:52for travelers. Statistics reveal that each year, several dozen people become victims of this perilous road.
06:00It's not only the natural conditions that make roads extremely difficult. Just take a look at this
06:06scene. It's an ordinary day in Ho Chi Minh City, the biggest city in Vietnam. With a population of around
06:129 million people that keeps growing, traffic congestion is one of the city's biggest problems.
06:18The widespread use of motor scooters, which almost everyone has, only makes it worse.
06:25Sometimes there are even calls to outright ban scooters in the city.
06:29This video was filmed in 2018 in the tiny town of Beaver, Arkansas. The wooden bridge, affectionately
06:45named the Little Golden Gate, was built across the White River nearly 80 years ago. Despite its almost
06:51toy-like size, it became a crucial link for the residents of Beaver for many years. So, it was all the more
06:58shocking for witnesses to see the bridge sagging under the weight of a passing bus.
07:06Look at that. Are you videoing? Yeah. Holy cow, look at that.
07:11I don't know. Somebody's gone from there out here.
07:30Have you heard about the Japanese Alps?
07:32There are actually three mountain ranges, located in central Honshu Island. Among them is the famous
07:44Ontake volcano, a popular pilgrimage site. There's also the Tatayama Snow Corridor, a spectacular scenic
07:52route between the towns of Tatayama and Omachi. The 90-kilometer route opened in April.
08:03And the snow walls along the way can rise to 15 to 20 meters high. This corridor is also called the
08:10Roof of Japan, with elevations starting at 7 meters and reaching up to 2,400 meters above sea level.
08:17Watch out. These images might blow your mind and change your entire perspective on traffic jams.
08:44This road in China looks like a nightmarish 50-lane highway, but it's actually just a four-lane road
08:58that expands near the toll booths. The massive traffic jam near the city of Zuzhou is due to the
09:03huge number of people traveling for the national holidays. Millions of people hit the road at once,
09:09causing this major traffic jam.
09:22The Dalton Highway in Alaska is the northernmost stretch of the Pan American Highway and the most
09:28desolate. It ends right at the edge of the Arctic Ocean. This road passes through truly wild areas.
09:35Along its 666-kilometer length, there are only three small towns and three gas stations.
09:42The road surface alternates between asphalt and gravel, with ice and snow often obstructing it from
09:48fall to spring. Despite the lack of treacherous cliffs or sharp turns, the highway often makes it onto
09:54lists of the most dangerous roads in the world. This is due to Alaska's harsh climate, where storms and
10:00snowstorms are common. In spring, when the ice melts, certain stretches of the highway can turn into rivers.
10:18While some roads face dangers like ice or rock falls, in Thailand drivers sometimes have to deal with elephants.
10:24When a family of elephants crosses a busy highway near Bangkok, people have no choice but to stop
10:39traffic and let them pass.
10:50When a family of elephants outside the river, they're feeling very dangerous.
10:52When feeling of the water, they're feeling very weak.
10:54They're feeling very weak. I'm going to get the water.
10:55When feeling of the river, they have to get the water.
10:58With a different weather. They have to get the water.
11:00It's heading out to the river.
11:08That's why I'm going to go.
11:12I'm going to go.
11:14You have to admit, this winding road in the Eastern Alps looks more like a ride at an
11:35amusement park than a real road.
11:37Welcome to the Stelvio Pass, located on the border between Italy and Switzerland, there's
11:43an elevation of 2,757 meters.
11:46The 47-kilometer stretch features 75 sharp turns, a real challenge for even the most experienced
11:53drivers.
12:13You've never seen a railroad quite like this.
12:19This is Meiklong, a market on rails located in Bangkok, Thailand's capital.
12:26It's been around for nearly a century, starting when vendors refused to move their historic
12:31trading spot during railway construction.
12:33Now, their stalls are literally on the tracks.
12:37Trains pass through here quite often, about eight times a day.
12:41Each time, vendors follow a precise routine.
12:44They fold up their awnings and move their goods to spots where they won't be hit by the passing
12:48trains.
12:49The precision is incredible.

13:50This tunnel could trigger a claustrophobic attack.
13:55It's no wonder it's called the Needle's Eye.
13:57It's part of the Iron Mountain Road on the Black Hills Range in South Dakota.
14:02Stretching over 17 miles, it features 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, and 3 tunnels.
14:09Just look at how confidently this bus driver navigates through a tunnel that's less than 2.5 meters wide.
14:20The Winding Road of Iron Mountain was built back in 1933, despite engineers claiming it was impossible.
14:31It's a fantastic spot for tourism, provided you're prepared for a careful, leisurely drive.
14:50This phenomenal road is located in the Kunlun Mountain Range in the northwest of China.
15:02Known as Panlong, or the Heavenly Road of the Pamirs, this road might look breathtaking above, resembling a dragon's tail.
15:10However, drivers and tourists have dubbed it the Road Hell, and it's easy to see why.
15:16Over 75 kilometers, and there are more than 6,000 twists and turns, many of them sharp, 180 degrees and even some 270 degrees.
15:27It's a serious test for your sense of balance.
15:35Imagine the thrill of riding a motorcycle straight into dark and mysterious caves.
15:41You can have this extraordinary adventure in Thailand, around the Tong Pha Phum National Park.
15:52Old cave mines that used to be sites for lead ore extraction have been transformed into tourist trails.
15:58You can experience the unique ambiance of these subterranean mines while staying on your bike,
16:03and see stalactites and stalagmites forming up close.
16:11No, this isn't CGI.
16:29It's actual footage of the Ishma Ohashi Bridge in Japan, crossing the lagoon Lake Nakaomi near Matsui.
16:36In the video, it looks like an impossible Escher-like structure, making driving onto it seem like utter madness.
16:43In reality, though, it's not as scary as it seems.
16:46This remarkably long bridge, stretching 1.7 kilometers, isn't a sheer cliff, but rather features a quite manageable incline of just 6%.
16:55However, its unique design and certain perspectives create a stunning optical illusion that's made the Ishma Ohashi Bridge famous worldwide.
17:06The million-dollar highway is a 40-kilometer stretch of Route 550 in western Colorado, between the towns of Ori and Silverton.
17:16This two-lane mountain road offers breathtaking natural scenery, but enjoying the views requires excellent driving skills.
17:34The road is challenging and potentially dangerous, with steep cliffs, narrow lanes without guardrails, and dizzying S-turns.
17:42Additional risks include landslides and wildlife that might appear right on the road.
17:58This road is definitely not for beginners or nervous drivers.
18:02Around 40 accidents happen here each year.
18:04Sometimes drivers just stop in the middle of the highway and can't muster the courage to continue.
18:10In the snowy season, which starts in October, the road becomes even more challenging.
18:15You'll need snow chains for your tires during this time.
18:18Would you dare to drive this route just to admire the snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains?
18:23Let's head to Harderwick in the Netherlands, where there's a traffic interchange that might shock any driver.
18:45Imagine driving along a highway and seeing an actual riverboat floating overhead.
18:50This incredible structure is the Valuwamia Aqueduct, which spans 25 meters in width.
18:57It connects two artificial lakes and separates mainland Netherlands from the artificial island of Fleverbalde.
19:04The aqueduct allows small vessels to pass through easily, while the tunnel manages to handle 30,000 cars each day.
19:11Tourists remember this place for a lifetime.
19:2099 Bend Road in China is arguably the most fascinating mountain road on the planet.
19:43Located in the northwest of the Hunan province, it winds its way up Tiananmen Mountain, where you'll find a grand Buddhist temple and the famous Heaven's Gate Cave.
19:59This winding road is about 11 kilometers long and features exactly 99 turns, a number chosen for its association with the nine heavenly places in Taoism.
20:09The incredibly scenic highway can be quite dangerous to drive, though.
20:13For instance, there are no high guardrails.
20:16Therefore, it's only open to tour buses and professional drivers.
20:20This engineering marvel can be described as both a massive bridge,
20:50and a floating road.
20:52Known as the Shiziguan Floating Bridge, it was built in China, right over the Tianjiang River.
20:58The 400-meter-long bridge is made from polyethylene floats filled with water.
21:03Those daring enough to drive across it will be greeted by stunning tropical scenery and a gentle sway on the water.
21:10Just make sure to keep your speed under 20 kilometers per hour.
21:20The Atlantic Road in Norway is only 8 kilometers long, but it's world-renowned for its stunning design and breathtaking views.
21:31This stretch of two-lane highway connects the cities of Molde and Kristiansund through a series of small islands separated by the Atlantic Ocean.
21:40It features seven bridges, totaling 891 meters in length.
21:45The longest and highest of these is the Storsai Sundert Bridge.
21:49It juts out 23 meters over the ocean and has been nicknamed the Drunk Bridge,
21:55because its dramatic curve can make some viewers feel dizzy just looking at it.
22:10Driving along the Atlantic Road is a real adventure, especially since there are panoramic viewpoints on the bridges.
22:27Sometimes, traveling along this highway can give you goosebumps.
22:31When the ocean is stormy, the atmosphere here can be pretty eerie.
22:35The Passage du Gois Road, near the Commune of Beauvoir-Soumer, is a famous French national landmark.
22:55What makes it special is that it connects the island of Noirmoutier to the mainland
22:59by crossing the Bay of Borneo seabed, a part of the Atlantic Ocean.
23:03This unusual feature is due to the unique geological formation of the seabed.
23:09The collision of two oceans currently creates high sandbanks on a rocky base.
23:14Over the centuries, the road across the ocean became increasingly more solid
23:18as the height of the sandbanks continued to rise.
23:21In the 20th century, the road was paved with cobblestones and later asphalted.
23:26For most of the day, the road is underwater to a depth of 1.5 to 4 meters,
23:31making it accessible only twice daily during low tide.
23:35This mountain road in China's Henan province looks incredible,
23:59but what really stands out is the story of how it was built.
24:03The entire stretch of road through the rock, including a 1.2-kilometer tunnel that's 5 meters high,
24:09was carved out by hands of the villagers of Guoliang.
24:13The village, nestled in a valley surrounded by high mountains and cut off from the outside world,
24:18saw 13 villagers take on this ambitious task in the 1970s.
24:23They spent several years working with little more than hammers and chisels to complete it.
24:28The road is hardly what you'd call modern and safe.
24:31There's no barrier between the roadway and the drop.
24:33And during the rainy season, accidents are common.
24:36This magical highway interchange is located near the town of Oyamazaki in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
24:52It's a true masterpiece of modern road architecture, where two expressways and a bypass intersect.
25:03In addition to the elegant loops, there are nine bridges standing side by side.
25:08That's why it becomes an ancestors of the years being aassociated man who knows what to do fish.
25:12There are nine Websites and other grasslands where things are saved.
25:14That's how it is.
25:18This means that I can use the list to rewrite the map of my mind.
25:25You've got nothing about this.
25:26You've got nothing in it.
25:28You're estamos enви for whatever you get.
25:31I can turn on the outside of my house.
25:33This is our outstanding student Summit President.
25:35I'm Derek Why You can't 있 Perhaps State?
25:36A marvel of engineering, the Seven Mile Bridge is part of the Overseas Highway, connecting the island to the Florida Keys.
25:57Spanning more than 10 kilometers, the bridge provides stunning ocean visitors as you drive along.
26:06But when a tropical storm hits,
26:14the experience can turn into a horror show, particularly if you come across a menacing waterspout.
26:38To be continued...
26:56This road in Norway, known as the Trolls Path in English, certainly lives up to its name.
27:13Though the views are stunning, travelling here is far from comfortable.
27:18The road is narrow, and the cliffs and landslides make the drive quite challenging.
27:23For most of the year, it's closed, because ice and snow turn the highway into a dangerous
27:28trap.
27:36Perhaps the best way to take in the local beauty is from the air.
27:53A heavy fuel truck travels across the clear blue ice.
28:03This is a sight you can only see here on the Tibbet Kontoito Ice Road in Canada.
28:08This unique route was designed as a supply route for diamond and gold mines in the Northwest
28:13Territories.
28:14It's probably the longest ice road in the world for transporting heavy cargo.
28:20The winter road stretches over 600 kilometres and traverses frozen lakes with ice more than
28:25a metre thick, ensuring smooth traffic.
28:28During the season, up to 90,000 tonnes of cargo are transported along it.
28:33However, weather conditions can be challenging.
28:37Winter storms and snow drifts can impair travel and force drivers to use all their skills to
28:42keep their trucks under control.
29:10The Magic Roundabout is a crazy traffic interchange in the English town of Swindon.
29:15At first glance, it might look like a nightmare for novice drivers.
29:19Despite its seemingly complex design, the system has proven to be effective over the past 50 years,
29:25even with the significant increase in traffic.
29:28The Magic Roundabout consists of five separate roundabouts, all circulating clockwise, surrounding
29:34a central ring that directs traffic counterclockwise.
29:38Each outer roundabout manages traffic entering and exiting from its respective road.
29:43From above, it looks like an amazing example of controlled chaos.
29:45The Magic Roundabout is a global network of controlled chaos.
