00:00The urban architecture of Los Angeles is a boon for directors and other filmmakers.
00:07And if there's one place that's full of unique buildings, it's Downtown.
00:12Union Station, the city's historic train station, known for its colonial architecture
00:17Spanish, notably its entrance hall used as a courthouse in The Dark Knight Rises
00:22and as a police station in Blade Runner.
00:24Let's stay on rail transport but on a smaller scale since in 1901, the city
00:28of Los Angeles has put this unique funicular into service, because this type of lift
00:33mechanical will take you up or down a distance of 91 meters.
00:37The attraction, nicknamed Angel Flight, was very popular until the 1960s.
00:42before being officially closed in 2013 due to too many accidents, then
00:46reopened in 2017.
00:48During its closure period, the funicular will exceptionally be put back into service for
00:52the needs of the film La La Land which he will use for one of his scenes.
00:58A little further on, you will come across a building that is quite unusual due to its blue color and
01:02its rather unique art deco style, the Eastern Columbia Building.
01:06A magnificent building from the 1930s which had its moment of glory in cinema
01:10since it will welcome a certain Predator at its summit in Predator 2 in 1990.
01:15In a more modern style, you will not be able to miss the next building since it
01:19This is the tallest building in the city.
01:21I am of course talking about the Liberty Tower, now called the US Bank Tower, but I
01:26prefer Liberty Tower, it sounds less uh... capitalist.
01:29We can see it in many fictions, notably in Independence Day where Roland Emmerich
01:34enjoys destroying it, like almost all the monuments in the world.
01:37I think tourism isn't really his thing.
01:40Not far from there is the City Group Center, whose entrance hall served as the backdrop for
01:45a film that is still considered today to be the greatest thriller in the history of cinema,
01:49HIT.
01:50This hall is that of the bank robbed by De Niro and his group.
01:54They will cross it before arriving at their car where Valkilmer will fire the first shots.
01:58of fire until continuing the shooting further down the street.
02:01One of the most immersive shootouts in cinema.
02:04The Bradbury Building, hands down my favorite building here in Los Angeles.
02:09A magnificent exterior, but a totally unique interior.
02:13This sublime courtyard surrounded by visible staircases and elevators appears in dozens
02:17of film noir, but also in The Artist with Jean Dujardin, 500 Days of Summer,
02:23and especially in Riley Scott's masterpiece, Blade Runner.
02:26Where the building plays a key role since it houses The Apartment in the film
02:30of Sebastian, and that is where the climax takes place.
02:33Besides, let's stay on Blade Runner since opposite the Bradbury Building is the Million
02:37from Dollars Theater.
02:38One of the first movie palaces in the country which also appears in the same location in the film.
02:43The cinema also has the particularity of being one of the many other cinemas located
02:47on Broadway, in the historic city center.
02:50Between 1910 and 1931, twelve movie theaters were built on Broadway.
02:55This made the avenue have the largest concentration of cinemas in the world with
02:59a cumulative number of 15,000 spectators across all venues.
03:02Before the Second World War, this is where the biggest previews took place.
03:06place.
03:07But after the war, the halls began to be abandoned in favor of
03:10new rooms located in the Hollywood district.
03:12Today, all of these rooms can still be seen on Broadway, most of them abandoned,
03:17others transformed into stores, and only a tiny part continues to distribute
03:21movies.
03:22The city has promised to make an effort in terms of renovation of this true heritage
03:26cultural, and that would only be fair for a place that was once the cradle of our
03:31passion to all.
03:32everyone.
