00:00easy for him that's for sure right 20 minutes plus two here the first qualifying race of the
00:05weekend not a good jump for uh he likes home back but up the inside jet lawrence and clen
00:10colden off as they rip around that first turn oh kenny roxon off the back of the bike was it kenny
00:16no it's not he's there in third yeah i see jet get the jump i was worried about that fernandez
00:20immediately moved over on tomac making his life much more difficult roxon trying to force his
00:25way to the lead but jet lawrence just felt stood his ground stood firm hard and slick and stony
00:30under here under the trees yeah it's getting really slippery and jet has really shown a propensity to
00:35remain super patient in the early laps the exact opposite is typically true for roxon so i would
00:41expect roxon to attack jet early this corner more off cambered going into that right hander than it
00:46looks on tv look how slick it is coming out of here as it starts to dry out but jet lawrence double
00:50double on the run-up to what used to be godzilla which is now just a triple step into a 180
00:57cutback at gifting trying to go after fevra here and colden hoff in that third place behind
01:03jorge matthias talvikou flying start for the rider from finland
01:06so talvikou on the 55
01:13estonia sorry stepping up into 13
01:20talvikou fair for at the seven of colden hoff guys so just a couple positions further back behind
01:25the blue and gold of isaac gifting so frantic action here for the grand prix regulars but it's
01:32lawrence who leads away by from roxon by just over a second all right you see fernandez is up to ninth
01:38that's really where tomac would have liked to have been coming around in the top ten on that first lap i knew
01:42it was going to be a battle for position right out of the gate there he's in 21st so a lot of work
01:47to be done here but the good news is it's a 20 minute plus two lap race 25 minutes and obviously
01:51not everybody is world class in this field yes there are a good nine or ten uh quality riders in
01:57mxgp as geisha slips up the inside of roman fevra at the end of that opening lap and moves up
02:02immediately into fourth place so uh geisha not hanging around either
02:07but you like tomac with a lot of work today to do as you say now in 19th place how about this ride
02:14from talvikou he has raced here before in the 250 class or mx2 for our uh european friends but nothing
02:21like this not a performance where he's running inside the top five at any point so uh he was showing
02:26up for his team right now on the drone here kenny roxon dogging jet lawrence at the moment as they
02:31head uphill so the australian leading the german just gives you an indication as to how close those
02:37trees feel in real time as they sweep through this part of the racetrack through seven drop it into eight
02:43again a little bit off camp but as they tip in there then you've got these hard and predictable
02:47predictable ruts and the shadowing of the trees as well you don't really see a clean line at that part
02:52of the racetrack it's really difficult back there now i've done several reports during our pro motocross
02:56races from that exact section because it is so difficult to see you added rocks bumps ruts it's
03:02almost more of feeling your way around the track than than it is seeing it the top two pulling away
03:07they've got here turn 12 at the top of the hill turn 11 that's geisha talvikou geisha nap in the third
03:12place
03:22jett lawrence in his uh in his line of sight yeah and kenny is so good early laps he's so explosive uh and
03:28and i think most of these riders have understood to really race kenny you have to withstand the
03:32barrage in the early laps if you can do that you get a few laps in kenny calms down a little bit and settles
03:38in and i think that jet is really kind of taking that to heart here right part of the racetrack here
03:44jet is uh tripling through the turn into those and tripling out at the end of that sand section
03:49didn't quite get that there maybe we can follow jet lawrence through there next time around just
03:52to give us an indication at home of exactly how he's getting through there doubling over the finish
03:57line not too many riders taking the uh opportunity on that this weekend so far yeah it's a hard landing
04:04uh we've seen riders and honestly they're more doing it today than typically at a pro motocross race
04:09so uh it's a the dirt is a little harder right now than we've seen at pro motocross races i would say
04:14that's also because it's 2 30 in the afternoon yeah versus you know a earlier morning type race so
04:20we'll see if that continues but it is a hard landing and you wonder if they can continue to do that as
04:25they get tired roman fever up to four fernandez up to fifth gifting down to six cold off seven
04:29telvico is down to eighth place so uh fervor fernandez
04:35so fernandez from spain obviously uh occupying the captain's role no jorge prado this weekend of course but
04:44still a uh a solid team that spain can put out with riven fernandez there guillem ferez and uh francesco
04:55uh from the emx2 category garcia of course there's the 61 of gifting he's in sixth place at the moment
05:05that's an awkward section coming out of that corner is it because it looks like you can double in
05:08or go out and single and double almost through the barrier there it's really ruddy on the takeoff
05:14on the inside so it is much quicker but just it's so deteriorated on the inside they really can't drive
05:19through it fevra thinking about booking up his ideas because uh as he launches up over the top of the
05:26hill he's almost lost him guys are ahead of him but we know that this is just about qualifying today two
05:31good scores and for the the scoring system all weekend long whether it's a qualifying race
05:37or the main race on sunday it's one point for the win two for second three for third and that'd be the
05:41same in the mx2 qualifying race in the open race and obviously the the lowest score the best score to
05:47go through automatically is going to be two points so let's say lawrence leading the way if uh
05:54they go and get another one in any of the next two races that's the absolute lowest score they will
05:58qualify on pole position for the race on sunday and again i kind of let off the before the race on top
06:06of the show speaking about this this start it's not as critically important you look at races like
06:11redbud buds creek other mxgp rounds that have hosted motocross nations the inside dominates the starting
06:16position this one's not so much you want to kind of be more in the middle so it's good news for team
06:22usa if they could qualify somewhere in the top seven or eight i don't see a big advantage versus being
06:28say third versus six they won't really matter
06:58uh
07:03uh
07:07uh
07:17uh
10:21We saw orange and gold and, you know, reds and yellows, and I thought that was Roxton, but Roxton emerged in second position.
10:27Good effort to be up to eighth by Lucas Coon and going down on the first corner and being ahead of Tomac already.
10:32That says a lot about his pace.
10:34Yeah, look at that.
10:35Oh, and the guys have caught him on the exit as well.
10:37That unseated him, cost him a couple of positions, and a good recovery from him as well because he got himself up to fourth initially, but Fernandez has since gone by the Slovenian.
10:45But it's Lawrence who leads, 5.7 seconds clear as we are in America.
10:52American race fans so used to seeing this sight.
10:54Yeah, and this is basically what we've seen from him.
10:58First couple laps, let things unfold.
11:01Don't take any unnecessary risk.
11:03As you get more comfortable, you sort out the lines.
11:05Then you start addressing pace, and you start to simply pull away.
11:08And we've seen Roxton, once he was able to withstand that fury at the beginning, Roxton settles in, and typically Jett has more pace once they settle.
11:17Up into turn 11.
11:20Is this Tevra coming back in the opposite direction?
11:22I think it is.
11:22About 20 seconds down on Lawrence at the moment.
11:25Got Fernandez just behind him.
11:26So this is the battle for third place.
11:29Over the single, and then over the big booter, and then up into the GoPro turn.
11:33Incredible ride from Fernandez here.
11:35He was inside the top ten of the first half, and he's passed his teammate, former world champion.
11:40He's about to pass the new world champion.
11:43And we see rides like this.
11:44It's not that atypical at Motorcrastination to see riders stand out like this, but I think everybody has to be impressed.
11:51Nice improvise there under the liquid molly banner.
11:53He jumped onto the plateau, railed the outside, carried that momentum, and it's pulled him another couple of bike links closer to Roman Fevra.
12:00Both doubling in here, but Fernandez will have the inside line.
12:03He'll lose out at the end of the straight, though.
12:05He'll lose out at the end of the straight, though.
12:33He's made up a moment at the end of the straight, though, right now.
12:37And amidst this exciting battle, we'll continue to keep our eyes on it.
12:40But the question was, how much will he care for me?
12:44Now we've got an emotionally straining MXGP championship.
12:48But guys, this is not looking like an unmotivated individual.
12:50The outgoing number one against the current number one in the HRC Honda team, but also
13:06Febvre, of course, rode a little bit defensively towards the end of the season to get the championship.
13:12But now, the gloves are off.
13:15Just go for the race.
13:16Go for the win.
13:17So it could get a bit chippy?
13:19Is that what you're saying?
13:20And we get to benefit, because we're watching it unfold in front of us.
13:24Different mindset completely now.
13:27I love what Roger said.
13:28The gloves are off.
13:29All bets are final.
13:32And Tomac still turns.
13:34Siever for the Swiss.
13:35Onzième, Jeremy Siever.
13:37Onzième, and Luca Connen, who is now on the car on a little bit more than a second and a half.
13:43Back at the front, Jet Lawrence is just continuing to stretch away.
13:47He's over a second and a half quicker.
13:50And Ken Rockson in second and the rest.
13:52He's just running away there.
13:54Just pulling away.
13:55He's up to about nine seconds now in front.
13:58Nine seconds is that gap.
13:59He just turned a 201.
14:00Hey, people may be thinking, hey, he's slowing down a little bit.
14:04Megawatt, we see him do this at Outdoor.
14:06We see him do this at Supercross.
14:07He finds a lead, a gap that he's comfortable with, maintains it.
14:10If it falls below that, okay, wake it back up.
14:13Francis, it's absolutely incredible to watch week in and week out how knowledgeable he is
14:17about how fast he has to go and how hard he has to push it.
14:21And you see, the kid uses less energy than anybody on the track.
14:25But on the last lap, Romain Ferre quick and rocks in two seconds.
14:31We'll see.
14:32The gap is, hey, he's two seconds more.
14:35If ever, still turning 201.
14:37Yeah, yeah, 201 is there.
14:38Yeah, absolutely.
14:40Fantastic.
14:41Check out number four.
14:42Eli Tomacchi's right on the back.
14:43We're at a Tony Cairoli now.
14:45But we know Cairoli will not roll over.
14:47Trust me.
14:47There we are.
14:48They go around pit lane.
14:4922 Cairoli for Team Italy.
14:52Tomac head down, body language, charging hard.
14:55He's intense at the moment, but he can sense there's more points to be had.
14:59Eating the roost right there.
15:00Did not matter to Tomac.
15:02He wants that position as they go through the split lane.
15:04And they're going to head back into the forest.
15:06Tony was going to steer with the rear, no doubt about it.
15:08Man left the power to it with the super drift.
15:10The incredible resistance of Tony Cairoli, who resists to Eli Tomac.
15:14Ladies and gentlemen, at 40 years, Eli Tomacchi has all the pain of the world to double in Tony Cairoli.
15:19Lucas Koonen, meanwhile, is all over the back wheel of Glenn Koldenhoff.
15:22So Belgium against their neighbours, the Netherlands for 7th place.
15:27Koonen from last 35th right through at 37th.
15:31In fact, he's already up to 8th place, and very soon going to be 7th.
15:3630 places he's made up in this race.
15:38Koonen just had to thread the needle right there, and he absolutely did it with precision.
15:42Set the bike down exactly where it needed to be to make another pass.
16:16In third place, Romain Febvre's just done his personal fastest lap of the race, 2-0-1-6.
16:21So Febvre, the French champion, the 34-year-old, 10 years between his championships, is now putting on a late charge.
16:29We've got three and a half minutes before that two-lap board comes out.
16:32That speaks to what we were talking about.
16:34Who's holding something back?
16:35Who's got a little something left in the tank, and who didn't show their full hand with 10 minutes to go?
16:40And until the last lap, Romain Febvre will be 100, 200%.
16:45Guy's an animal.
16:46This guy is, yeah, yeah, exactly.
16:48I've been a fan of his for years.
16:50And Koonen, it will be the same, eh?
16:51Yes, no question.
16:53You can check it.
16:53Just check it.
16:54Just one quick fact, everybody.
16:55One more.
16:56Good enough now.
16:57Out of the top 11 races, 10 of those are factory bikes.
17:02One privateer.
17:03How is it gifting for the streets?
17:05There you go.
17:07Amazing.
17:08Amazing.
17:10And we talked about gifting his talent.
17:12We talked about his form on the bike and how good he looks.
17:14And there's a testament to it right there.
17:16Sixth place.
17:17One to three minutes.
17:17Three minutes.
17:18Three minutes.
17:19Go ahead, Haley.
17:20Megawatt, you mentioned something earlier, I believe, about Jet Lawrence, that he's so efficient
17:24on the motorcycle.
17:25And one observation I have is when he looks really loose in free practice and early in qualifying,
17:30almost a little bit playful on the motorcycle.
17:32That's when you know that he is in a really good non-pressure and a great environment, great
17:37headspace.
17:37That's what I had witnessed from him earlier today in the free practice session.
17:40And he set the fast times.
17:42Absolutely, Haley.
17:43And you and I have witnessed that all summer long outdoors as the Nationals.
17:46That's exactly how he rides the bike.
17:47I'll tell you what, though.
17:48It's incredible.
17:49Roger, Roxxon in second.
17:50He's a veteran out there.
17:52He looks good.
17:53He got the gate.
17:53And there's no one going to take that away from him.
17:55Looking good for the Germans.
17:57Don't forget, they've got World MX2 Championship on Lagerfeld.
18:00They're backing up.
18:00Francis, you and I talked this morning about an experience of whose name came up.
18:04Roxxon.
18:05That's whose name came up during our conversation.
18:07A guy you're never going to count out.
18:08I don't care if the guy's 50.
18:10You're not going to count him out.
18:11Exactly.
18:12It's a great ability to return for guys like Luca Conan, or even like Roman Favre.
18:18We'll find Jet Lawrence at the entry of the start line.
18:20The advance is 7 seconds on Ken Roxxon.
18:23And behind it, it's 7 seconds on Roman Favre a priori.
18:26It seems difficult for Roman Favre to be in the third position.
18:28On vapelle, quatrième Geyser, Favre, pardon, cinquième Geyser, Luca Conan, qui est maintenant sixième.
18:34Luca Conan, six.
18:35So here we go.
18:36With just over a minute and a half to go before the two laps come out, we got Australia, lead from Germany with Roxxon.
18:43France, three, Febbra.
18:45Spain, four, Fernandez.
18:47Slovenia, five.
18:48Belgium, six.
18:49Sweden, seven.
18:51Koltunov, eight for the Netherlands.
18:52Then Italy and Team USA with Eli Tomac in tenth.
18:58I do believe for Team Germany, of course, we've talked so much about Ken Roxxon, the number 16, maintaining that second place position.
19:05I think this team is counted out a lot, but I do think that they legitimately have podium aspirations, especially when you consider side-in-line captain.
19:11So that's got a little bit of help there.
19:13Yeah, and that's, you know, weight, race, pace.
19:15You can make up several seconds in one lap, but I'll tell you what, if Kunin can get up front early tomorrow, I don't know if he can beat Jet.
19:23Yeah, that's the question we've been...
19:28How to manage a race.
19:31There's no question about it.
19:32And when you put that experience to good use of DMX...
19:34It was three laps a go.
19:36And Jet Lawrence's lap on lap three was a 159.8.
19:39So in that respect, when you think about Kunin's pace versus Jet Lawrence's pace, maybe there is another couple of seconds there.
19:50Of course, everybody comes in here thinking, yeah, we can beat him and whatever else.
19:53But the sort of...
19:54It's like Instagram versus reality, isn't it?
19:56You know?
19:57Yeah, I don't say this about many riders, but I think we're watching one of the best that's ever done it.
20:02And that is, for me, high praise.
20:06And he's 22 years old.
20:08We're nowhere near, I think, peak Jet, maybe a year or two out.
20:12His brain and the physical aspects of Jet are going to kind of converge here at some point.
20:19And I don't know that there will be anybody that beats that guy as well.
20:22He still looks like 15-year-old Jet as well, you know, in his face, in his facial expressions.
20:26You know, sort of skinny face and whatever else and acts and goofs around like a kid as well.
20:31Once he gains the kind of mental maturity that his older brother has, whether that's 23, 24, 25,
20:38at some point, I think you're going to see a level unlock that we haven't seen for maybe ever.
20:44Maturity, Hunter Lawrence.
20:46He was talking about Cherry Power, Mary Lou, yesterday.
20:50If you've not seen it, Paddock Chat with Lisa Leland and Team Australia.
20:54Nice little comedy moment.
20:56Kenny Rockson in second.
21:01But Lucas Coonan, probably the rider of the race for me, going down on the first turn.
21:06I would say he and Fernandez really kind of overcame.
21:11You know, Fernandez, gate pick, out there with Tomac.
21:13He got the job done as far as executing on the start.
21:16And his pace was phenomenal.
21:17Coonan overcoming a crash and putting in some of the best lap times of the race.
21:21Both of them will sleep easier tonight, knowing that if they just execute on the things that they had troubles with today,
21:27that they're going to be in the fight.
21:29Isaac Gifting, sure, he'll be fairly pleased with where he is in that seventh position.
21:33Glenn Coltenoff has, well, saw him dropping down the leaderboard.
21:37And there he is, trackside, dealing with a medic and looking like he's grimacing as well.
21:41So, is that going to be the end, really, for the Netherlands?
21:46Yes, you can qualify with two riders, but you still need five scores out of six,
21:50which means you need all three guys healthy on Sunday.
21:53So, Glenn Coltenoff there now to, what, seventh, eighth place with about three laps to go.
21:59Let's just hope that's a, I don't think I can continue this race, but I'll be fine tomorrow.
22:03Because, again, they'll use the top two today.
22:05Won't really affect a whole lot, assuming that Kai and Calvin Glander can put in solid results this afternoon.
22:11But it doesn't look great on the surfaces.
22:13We saw a Kawasaki rider there pushing their motorcycle on the side of the track.
22:17I'm not sure who that was.
22:20Well, in the process of elimination, we've got Roman Febvre on a Kawasaki.
22:25And then there's a couple down there, Joaquin Poli of Argentina and the Puerto Rican of Sebastian Veles Cardona.
22:32But, so, it could have been one of the other two, I would imagine, since Febvre is still showing on the intermediate sectors.
22:41But Kenny Rockson, a wily old character, a man of a lot of experience with these races.
22:46Tried to give Jet Lawrence a bit of a run at the start of the race, but you know what?
22:50He's been in that position before where you can try and match him, Jet finds another gear.
22:55You go with him, Jet finds another gear, and you just kind of go, you know what?
22:58We can keep doing this all day.
22:59So, let's save some of those gear shifts for tomorrow.
23:02Yeah, but I truly think that Kenny won't worry about Jet so much.
23:05He'll be very pleased to beat the likes of Febvre, Geiser, Lucas Kunin.
23:11Like, he thrives on that.
23:12Remember, German, as we all know, would have been, you know, multi-time, I believe.
23:17It was a big crash there.
23:19That was, I'm not sure who that was, but that was a big crash.
23:22Just in front of Tim Geiser there.
23:24But I think for Ken Rockson, he thrives on beating DMX GPO Eats because those would be the rivals for him had he chosen to stay in Europe.
23:34Coming up on where that crash was.
23:35Yeah, that's Eli Tomac.
23:36He's now got himself up into ninth place, so wave medical flags.
23:39And different flag rules as well for 31, Magnus Smith of Denmark.
23:47So, the KL Racing Team rider normally.
23:50And, yeah, you come out of that turn, you just, it's not even like a drop-off, it's a gradual drop.
23:54So, I wonder if you just caught an edge or something like that.
23:56Yeah, lost traction, caught a rear wheel.
23:58Yeah.
23:59Lost traction, high side there pretty easily.
24:00And, remember, those are the sections you really can't see a lot.
24:04And, speaking to riders that, you know, race this race in the Pro Motocross Series, you don't see the bump and it catches you out.
24:10So, you almost have to ride as if the lights are completely off because you're not really sure what you're going to hit.
24:15Final turn then for Jet Lawrence.
24:17Little double over the big double.
24:20Lights the candles.
24:21Little bit of a fist bump and a celebratory one-hander there as Jet Lawrence wins the qualifying race in MXGP here.
24:28The first race of the day at Ironman, Motocrosser Nations.
24:33Looks pretty in control.
