00:00These four music students have never met until today.
00:03We decided to fly them out to Muzora Music Studios to see what happens
00:07when four strangers who are used to playing music by themselves
00:10at their own pace are forced to work together against the clock.
00:16In just eight hours, these everyday musicians will learn a new song
00:20and they'll work with a producer to professionally record it in our studio.
00:24The only question is, can they pull it off?
00:30I am retired security for a high school
00:39and I worked part-time for Live Nation as security and I still do that.
00:45It's concerts, so I get to watch some of the biggest names.
00:50I talked to Carlos Santana and I ended up getting invited on stage
00:56and I played three songs with Carlos Santana.
01:00Okay, I am a coder.
01:05First time playing guitar, hey Omar?
01:07Yeah.
01:08Yeah, brand new.
01:10I'm a little bit nervous, mostly about the interview, not for playing cards.
01:15I just watched your video online there.
01:18Yeah, my phone.
01:18I feel like I know you.
01:20No, it's great. I love the Beatles cover.
01:22So I run a company called PodWorks in Las Vegas and PodWorks is an internet broadcasting company
01:27but it's a pretty easy business to run, quite frankly.
01:31So I spend half my time kind of running the business
01:34and then I have a digital audio workstation off to the side of me.
01:37So I'll just rotate over here and work on my latest piano thing, which is currently Chim Chimney.
01:43Right now I'm an actress, writer, and producer.
01:51I'm always nervous to sing live in front of people.
01:54Fingers crossed it'll go well.
01:56Bella, I heard you're not feeling 100%.
01:59It'll be interesting.
02:00Yesterday, evening and night, everything just went and blew up with my voice, so.
02:13Yeah, you could tell everybody in this group has already been playing this song a little bit
02:17because we basically sat down and started jamming on it pretty much at the jump.
02:25Sounds too good, right, Jared?
02:27Way too good.
02:28We gotta wreck this somehow.
02:41They sound great.
02:43A little too great.
02:44A little too great.
02:45And we want to challenge these musicians.
02:48We want them to come out of this process feeling like they really pushed themselves.
02:52Or we could just stop and go for lunch.
02:54We're going to request that we change the actual feel of the song.
02:59I'm thinking something punk?
03:02Heavy rock?
03:03Speed it up a little bit?
03:04I'm getting down on the sunshine.
03:09It sounds really good.
03:12A little bit too good.
03:14Don't you think?
03:15Oh, here it goes.
03:16What's wrong with death?
03:17I'm sorry.
03:17Maybe we should change the style.
03:21Metal.
03:22I was thinking more punk, hard rock, and Bella thinking of where your voice is at.
03:26Maybe it's actually that grittiness and that grunginess.
03:29You sound like a rock star.
03:30I know.
03:31Do I?
03:31Because not from here I don't.
03:33I like punk music, so it's definitely different, and I like that.
03:37Especially with the rasp I have going on right now.
03:40Hopefully it works.
03:42None of us were expecting the change of style.
03:45Hey, maybe we should go back to the electric.
03:48Yeah, of course.
03:49Right?
03:49We're doing punk, right?
03:51Yeah.
03:52Actually, I feel a little bit more comfortable because now I'm going to be playing the electric
03:56guitar song.
03:58Something like that.
03:59A little slower, though.
04:03I'm up to the challenge, so I really like the fact that I'm capable of making the change.
04:09It's just a little, makes me a little nervous.
04:20Can we have a solo?
04:22Oh, yeah.
04:22We've got to have some solos in this, for sure.
04:25What do you think about making some more space in those verses?
04:31It's like a tighter, like a...
04:41Like on the C.
04:45We could even push, do a push on that G chord, Linda.
04:49Would that be fun?
04:49It creates this little breath in there, and I dig that.
05:02I like that part.
05:03I'm just worried about me getting to it, from it.
05:06You're the last of our concerns.
05:09You're great.
05:10That's good to know.
05:12What do we think, Scott?
05:13What would...
05:14This could be dirtier.
05:16Yeah.
05:17I don't know how to dirty this thing up.
05:19We could try something more modern, like the Killers, the way they use, like kind of those
05:24synth-y...
05:25We're still kind of messing with it.
05:27You know, they did the, we're going to do it this way, now we're going to do it punk,
05:30which is fantastic.
05:31Dirtier, I think it would be more in line with what's going on.
05:34More like a nasty, like deep purple organ sound?
05:37Staying on pitch, especially since I'm having issues with my voice right now, so that's
05:43quite difficult right now, hitting the higher notes.
05:46Have you ever played, I was just thinking in the chorus, what about a Motown beat, like
05:51a...
05:52That's that bad.
05:55Have you ever played?
05:56Huh?
05:57Have you ever played that beat like that?
05:58Yeah.
06:00Or like that.
06:04It went from punk rock to a Motown groove, and, and that was cool.
06:11Woohoo!
06:13That's hot.
06:14I like it.
06:14I love it.
06:16I don't want to wear out Bella's voice anymore.
06:19I think we're on a good trajectory, like I feel like this is coming together.
06:24Everybody's like qualified enough as a musician.
06:27We'll tweak a few things, but it's, it's pretty straightforward, right?
06:30You guys all feel good?
06:31Yeah.
06:34All right.
06:36So we're going to go in, we're going to check in on Linda, see how she's doing with
06:38the song.
06:39And I heard there's some changes they made to the original.
06:41So let's go in and let's check it out.
06:50Hey, Brendan!
06:51Hey, Linda.
06:52How are you?
06:53Fine.
06:54You're sounding great.
06:56Do you guys want to just start from the same spot and then dig in a little bit?
07:01We have a new rock fill.
07:03Yeah.
07:03So.
07:05Yeah.
07:06And then it goes to the Motown.
07:07Nice.
07:11I like that.
07:12I started very early.
07:14I wanted to be a drummer and in high school, they wouldn't let me play because I was a female.
07:21And when I got to junior college, then I started taking drum classes.
07:26And that's when I started playing percussion.
07:28And I just never lost sight of it.
07:30You know, through getting married, helping my husband and I, raising the kids.
07:43That's fast.
07:44That's fast.
07:45The nice thing about this experience is that we have people from all over the world, all
07:49sorts of different backgrounds, playing with people I wouldn't normally play with.
07:52Randy, can we try lining up with the acoustic on the...
07:56I know punk doesn't believe in dynamics.
08:02We're going to blend.
08:03We've got folk in this song.
08:04We've got Motown.
08:05We've got...
08:06Oh, damn it.
08:07Yeah.
08:07It's a stew.
08:08It's a jambalaya.
08:09A jambalaya.
08:10Okay, jambalaya.
08:11I got it.
08:11I got it.
08:13Oh, it's a lot to remember.
08:14That's where it came in, right?
08:20That was the right spot, yeah.
08:22Okay.
08:23I'm really hard on myself because if I'm not, then I won't improve.
08:28And if I think I'm good and flawless, then I'll just be complacent and I won't do better.
08:36So it's not a lack of confidence always.
08:39It's a push myself to do better.
08:42So it's a really fast right-hand part, right?
08:46Mm-hmm.
08:47So if it were me, I would be sweating trying to keep up with that.
08:52Can we try, when you get to the chorus, when you go to the punk feel, instead of going with
08:56the eighths, so the verse is playing like this, when you get to the chorus, switch to
09:03the quarters and then open the hi-hats just a little bit.
09:07So it's a little bit sloshy.
09:09Okay.
09:12Yeah.
09:16Can we try that coming out of the verse into the chorus and just see how that feels?
09:21Yeah.
09:21And then back into it.
09:35Beth.
09:36Oh, it's helpful.
09:37So how does that feel with the different kind of groove in the chorus for bass and for drums?
09:42Well, I love it.
09:43I just need to get it right.
09:47It sounds great.
09:49I'm excited to hear how this all turns out in the end in the final recording.
09:53And you're going to do great.
09:54What makes me feel the most nervous about this experience is singing live in front of people
10:10could mess up, probably will.
10:12So that's probably the most nerve-wracking thing.
10:19Hey!
10:21I heard you're having a little bit of a challenge.
10:24I am.
10:24The higher notes right now, my voice doesn't really want to go there.
10:28It's extremely difficult to control my voice as well right now because it feels so inflamed.
10:34I'm going to help you with that today.
10:36Oh, God, please.
10:37Okay?
10:38What I am going to ask you to do is, number one, drop expectations.
10:43Yeah.
10:43There is nothing that you can physically do to change the fact that you're sick right now, right?
10:50I want to power through and I want to learn from this experience and I guess learn how
10:55to control my voice when it is sick because, again, I normally don't sing when this is going
11:00on, so this is a new experience for me.
11:03I mean, I know you feel like this is it.
11:05I feel like I'm letting people down.
11:07Okay.
11:08You're not.
11:09But I understand that me saying that doesn't take away that that's how you feel?
11:12Right.
11:13I absolutely hate messing up.
11:15I get really, really hard on myself.
11:18If you are just going over, I'm sick, I can't do it, I can't hit the nose, I'm flipping,
11:27like when I go up, I flip, then you really got nothing to work with because your mind will
11:34defeat your body every single time.
11:37Right.
11:37What I've had to do when sick is that I have to sing songs differently, right?
11:43Right.
11:44So if I tend to hit a note that I normally hit really comfortably, but I'm sick, I can't,
11:48then I choose another note.
11:50Right.
11:50That I can actually hit with whatever is going on with my vocal cords.
11:55I want it more than I don't.
11:58Like, I want to know that I can do it.
11:59I want to know that I can achieve that accomplishment, you know, reach the top of the mountain.
12:04And so I just want to keep going to prove to myself that I can.
12:08You are going to be able to do it.
12:09Okay.
12:10But I'm going to, I'm going to rewrite the melody with you so you don't have to go to
12:14those notes.
12:14Okay.
12:15And we'll come up with something beautiful.
12:22Hi, I'm Scott.
12:24I'm here to help.
12:24Hi, Scott.
12:25Nice to meet you.
12:26Nice to meet you.
12:26How's it all going?
12:27Great.
12:28Yeah?
12:29Great, yeah, yeah.
12:30I'm not very skilled at piano, so it should be interesting to see just what's going on here.
12:35How have you only been learning for four months?
12:38Well, so, to be fair, so I used to be a professional musician.
12:42Okay.
12:43A guitar player.
12:44Okay, so you're cheating.
12:45Yeah, a little bit.
12:46So a solo guitar player, have a couple albums, three albums out.
12:49I've sold 55,000 CDs of my music.
12:53And was doing that up until December of 2023 when I thought, I want to be a lounge piano
13:01player in Vegas.
13:02I'm also going to retire at the end of this year as well.
13:05So my goal, again, is two years, professional lounge piano player, and that's what's going
13:11to happen.
13:12So that's been my journey so far.
13:13So I'm familiar kind of with some stuff.
13:17You have some musicality.
13:18Yeah.
13:18You've built that.
13:19Yeah, yeah.
13:19But not where I'm comfortable in just landing on songs and landing on chords and stuff.
13:25Exactly.
13:26Okay.
13:26I came really prepared.
13:28I think everybody, when we sat down the first time all together, we started jamming almost
13:33immediately on the song.
13:34So it was clear, we are prepared.
13:37We know the chord changes and all that stuff.
13:38I'm not worried about you at all.
13:40Yeah.
13:40So this guy's got it.
13:42We have no stress here.
13:48Hi.
13:50I'm sorry.
13:51I'm a hug.
13:52Me too.
13:53Good to meet you.
13:54Oh, nice to meet you.
13:55My mother used to be a music teacher, so that's how I started playing.
14:00But she was a piano teacher, so I started playing piano when I was like seven years old
14:07or so.
14:08But you know how it doesn't work when your mother is a teacher, so I dropped it.
14:14So how's it going?
14:15Could I maybe hear like what part you're working on?
14:17Well, actually, so first, I was doing like.
14:24Nice.
14:28Something like that.
14:29Instead of like.
14:29Cool.
14:30Every time I'm doing that.
14:31I like that feel a lot.
14:32Okay.
14:32That's great.
14:33With the, yeah, on the offbeat.
14:35So my mother used to have a guitar and I played the crap out of it.
14:42Until I broke it.
14:44Maybe I tried.
14:45I was wondering if maybe we can add a solo, but I don't think that the song's called for
14:50that.
14:50I feel like something like doubling the melody would be really interesting.
14:57Yeah, something like that.
14:58I was.
15:03Something like that.
15:04I don't know.
15:05Yeah.
15:05I'm not there yet.
15:07I think there's always a place for that.
15:09Though I also think with punk, it's kind of fun to play around with like.
15:12If there is a moment for lead guitar.
15:15Of course.
15:15Kind of making it a little sloppier than you normally would.
15:18Oh, yeah.
15:18Or maybe, yeah.
15:19Playing off.
15:19Oh, yeah.
15:21Oh, yeah.
15:21Really like dig into that note.
15:23Maybe get a pinch harmonic if you can.
15:25Yeah.
15:26Oh, nice.
15:26I might.
15:28That's awesome.
15:29One of the bands that I play with managed to have like a fairly amount of success.
15:37So, we could put a song in the radio and we used to play like rock, hair, hair, metal.
15:48But then grunge happened.
15:51It is nice to be in contact with other musicians.
15:56Because, well, I haven't been recording with other guys with like for like years.
16:00I don't know how many years.
16:02I dropped the music for quite some time.
16:07But after I get married, I don't know, the tickles started again.
16:12And I started playing again.
16:16You know, obviously you have the ability to play amazing lead guitar.
16:19Like you are a great lead guitar player.
16:21Just have fun.
16:22Yeah, yeah.
16:23Actually, I'm having a lot of fun.
16:25Which is amazing.
16:25And keep doing that.
16:26And you bring such a wonderful, positive energy.
16:29Oh, thanks so much.
16:30Yeah, and it comes through in your music too.
16:32And I think it would be amazing to capture that.
16:33I really appreciate that.
16:40I love the triplet feel or whatever you're doing there.
16:44That kind of halftime triplet, whatever it is.
16:46Can we do a few more of those?
16:47Yes, please.
16:47I want everybody to be smiling after they hear this drum fill.
16:51Like it just needs to bring joy to our hearts.
16:56I can feel right here when it's locked.
17:25And just the sound and the beats that I can get and manufacture.
17:34And it comes up sometimes are spontaneous.
17:38And it feels good to be able to do it.
17:43Look at her go, eh?
17:44That wasn't too bad.
17:58That was a good first one.
17:59I think we got it, guys.
18:10We got that verse.
18:11It's good.
18:12We got it.
18:13You're done.
18:14Let's bring him in with that chorus, sir.
18:23Want to go off that chorus?
18:25I lost it.
18:27One.
18:27Hey, can you give me one where you do the C walk down on the, so like the, just off the top?
18:47I just think that's what I did on the guitar.
19:00That's good energy in this taking.
19:02One take wonder.
19:15You're done.
19:22And that.
19:23So we push that.
19:24It goes like this.
19:31All straight, yeah.
19:34And then we do a coming down on sunny day and then back in.
19:40Yeah.
19:40And that's the vibe.
19:42First take, we'll just do a rhythm pass and then we'll overdub a solo after.
19:45Yeah.
19:46If you want, you're going to get it, man.
19:47This bump.
19:48You got this.
19:49Well, I'm not that good at improvising.
19:55You sound pretty good.
19:56You sound pretty good.
20:06I would say that I am a little bit of perfectionist because I always want to re-record it.
20:19That's great, man.
20:26I think we're good for that.
20:27You want to try a solo?
20:29Okay.
20:30Can we sort of like loop that part?
20:32No, we can't loop anything.
20:34We just get one take.
20:36Okay.
20:37Just kidding.
20:38We can loop it a bunch.
20:39Let's have some fun.
20:40It's really good.
20:49Let's find a way to get out of that.
20:50Yeah.
20:51I learned that when I can work on the pressure, I think that I could overcome all the nervousness
21:01that I had, and I don't want to sound like bad, but I am proud of how we all lead.
21:10That was my favorite.
21:11Yeah.
21:11I think we're good.
21:12Hey?
21:13I think we're good.
21:14Awesome.
21:18All right, Scott.
21:20Let's give her a shot.
21:21Yeah.
21:21Scottie.
21:43Yeah, man.
21:45You know your way around that thing.
21:46Four months?
21:47Really?
21:48You're a liar.
21:48No, it's hard.
21:49I mean, I don't believe you anymore.
21:52I've noodled with it, so I could do a shitload more.
21:55As a recording musician, I tend to go with the flow.
21:59Like, I'm not the kind of person that likes to do lots and lots and lots of takes, but
22:04every recording I've done, I can hear, oh, yeah, I made that mistake.
22:07I flubbed that note.
22:08But I'm okay with that.
22:09That's part of the energy for me of live music.
22:11It's like robot sounds there, man.
22:22Far out, man.
22:23Was that robot sounds you did there?
22:27Nailed it, Scott.
22:29There you go.
22:29A little too easy, though.
22:30I think you win for Lee's time in the studio.
22:36I'm sure you're an idea with the big dog here.
22:38Oh, yeah.
22:39I want to get dueling percussion.
22:41Oh, yeah?
22:42Jared and Linda together on, we got two overhead mics, so we need two tambourines, shakers.
22:49Yeah, let's get you in there.
22:50All right.
22:52She's got it in the shoulders.
23:12Oh, there he goes.
23:19Yeah.
23:20Okay, pick up a shaker.
23:22Let's do one more shaker track.
23:25I've watched Jared grow from before Drumeo, and I used to watch him do lessons poolside
23:34and take his drum set all over everywhere.
23:38Push over the drums.
23:41Get this drum set.
23:47No.
23:50I think it's good for now.
23:54Yeah?
23:54What about your voice?
23:55Just give it a little, just sing with it.
23:58I don't know.
23:59Just sing with it.
24:00Where are we?
24:01Bend down like water.
24:03Here we go.
24:04Okay.
24:05And I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
24:10Sorry, I'm going to put my throat.
24:11Yeah.
24:11Let's just do a, let's do five, six sirens.
24:19Okay?
24:20Ready?
24:21Let's go.
24:22Like you did before.
24:25Let him out.
24:27Girl.
24:31Just take a breath.
24:33Just take a breath.
24:34You got it.
24:34You got this.
24:35I know that for a fact.
24:38Do you believe me?
24:39I do.
24:39Great.
24:41When it's over, so they say, beautiful, rainy, sunny day.
24:47I know, shining down like water.
24:52Like your body language has to reflect the intention of the song.
24:56Otherwise, like I don't know what you're trying to tell me.
24:58Gotcha.
24:58Okay.
25:00The one thing, so you were overshooting a couple of times.
25:05You felt it.
25:05And I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
25:12Coming down on Sunday.
25:19You did great.
25:20Come on in.
25:21Come on in.
25:21We killed it.
25:22Someone told me long ago, there's a calm before the storm.
25:44I know, it's been coming for some time.
25:51When it's over, so they say, it'll rain a sunny day.
25:57I know, it's shining down like water.
26:05And I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
26:10And I want to know, have you ever seen the rain coming down on a sunny day?
26:23Yesterday and days before, sun is cold and rain is hard.
26:29And I know, I've been that way for all my time.
26:36So forever all it goes, through the circle fast and slow.
26:42I know, and it can't stop, I wonder.
26:46And I want to know, have you ever seen the rain coming down on a sunny day?
27:05Yeah, I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
27:30And I want to know, have you ever seen the rain coming down on a sunny day?
27:52Yeah!
