1934ರಲ್ಲಿ ದಾವಣಗೆರೆಯ ಎಕೆ ಹಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಮಹಾತ್ಮ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಅವರು ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದ್ದರು. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಹರಿಜನರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂವಾದ ನಡೆಸಿದ್ದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಗಾಂಧಿನಗರ ಎಂದೇ ಹೆಸರಿಡಲಾಗಿದೆ.
