00:00Mr. Moholy-Nach,
00:02what is your attitude toward art today?
00:05I do not believe so much in art as in mankind.
00:08Every man reveals himself.
00:10Much of it is art.
00:14One of the most remarkable artists of the century,
00:17certainly one of the great teachers of our time.
00:19Moholy did almost everything.
00:21Photography, typography...
00:24He was very radical and groundbreaking,
00:27and he really put into question what is art.
00:30It says butcher in Marseille, very Moholy.
00:36My father decided to become an artist after the war.
00:39He landed in Berlin,
00:41and then he met Kropius and went to the Bauhaus.
00:44All this stuff was, like, exploding,
00:46and my dad was right in the middle of it.
00:48But this idea of modernism was absolutely unwelcome in Nazi Germany.
00:53You make abstract art not because it looks pretty.
00:57You make abstract art because you want to change the world.
00:59The Association of Arts and Industries in Chicago said,
01:03we need a school like the Bauhaus in German.
01:07So my dad accepted the job,
01:09and they called it the new Bauhaus,
01:11American School of Design.
01:13Moholy's approach was to get people to look again
01:15with the eyes of a child.
01:17This was a German Bauhaus exercise to cultivate your sense of touch.
01:22They cared about the process and the act of creation
01:25and making something new.
01:27It was constantly veined with joy.
01:30One of the most ubiquitous products that came out of the school was the honey bear.
01:37You had someone like the first designer of Playboy magazine.
01:40Its name is Doug.
01:44When the students graduated, they went all over the country teaching the ID philosophy.
01:52Moholy's almost ten years in Chicago were absolutely foundational for the history of 20th century art.
02:00For Moholy's art, the whole artistic practice was one of societal importance.
02:07And this totally influenced me a lot.
02:09I hooked into Moholy's thinking.
02:12Process is the most important thing.
02:15We grow as we make art.
02:18For Moholy's art.
02:19For Moholy's art.
02:20For Moholy's art.
02:21For Moholy's art.
02:22For Moholy's art.
02:23For Moholy's art.
02:24For Moholy's art.
02:25For Moholy's art.
02:26For Moholy's art.
02:27For Moholy's art.
02:28For Moholy's art.
02:29For Moholy's art.
02:30For Moholy's art.
02:31For Moholy's art.
02:32For Moholy's art.
02:33For Moholy's art.
