00:00hey how's it going it's me Bo back here on the film scene investigation channel with another
00:19movie review in today's video i'm going to be taking a look at the 1971 crime drama
00:28get carter now this is a famous british gangster movie that i saw many years ago as a teenager
00:39i was like flicking through the channels one night and yeah there it was i missed like the first
00:47like 20 minutes or so but um yeah i quickly picked up what was going on and uh yeah just became kind
00:56of enthralled uh what i was saying just before we get into the review guys if you haven't already
01:03please do consider subscribing to the channel all the support is greatly appreciated so get carter
01:12from 1971 was directed by the filmmaker mike hodges and was based on the 1970 novel by author ted lewis
01:23with a budget of just 750 000 pounds the movie's production began in the summer of 1970
01:33in newcastle england narrative wise the movie centered around the character jack carter who was played by
01:42michael kane a sophisticated london gangster who had just found out that his brother had died under
01:51some suspicious circumstances we saw jack travel up to newcastle to attend his brother's funeral
01:59and also to you know find out exactly what went on things just didn't seem right with frank jack's
02:08brother being a straight-laced kind of guy you know he kept his nose clean he was a hard worker
02:15and so yeah it just didn't make sense once he arrived in newcastle jack unraveled a series of
02:24clues that suggested that his brother had indeed been murdered he first questioned a lady called
02:32margaret frank's on and off lover who clearly knew something but remained silent she kept her mouth shut
02:42but margaret's reluctance to give any information well it just reinforced jack's suspicions about frank
02:53and so he continued digging until he uncovered the truth we were soon introduced to the character
03:02cliff brumby who was played by actor brian mosley a businessman a loud mouth and a man who
03:11didn't take kindly to seeing some jumped up gangster from london digging around for clues about his brother
03:18brumby was full of himself he really thought that you know nobody could touch him and so he decided to
03:27threaten jack by sending over some goons to see him off back to london but brumby's attempts at sending
03:37jack away were unsuccessful and soon jack confronted brumby to his face jack wanted answers yet brumby
03:48pleaded his innocence he said that he had nothing to do with frank's death but said the man the gangster
03:55cyril kinnear was involved jack didn't know what to believe all he knew was that yes his brother had
04:04been murdered and he just wanted to get to the bottom of who was responsible and so as the movie
04:10progressed jack would eventually find out that the reason his brother frank was murdered was because
04:17frank had found out that his daughter jack's niece had been involved in some pornographic child abuse
04:25material like any father would frank just wanted to protect his daughter and so once he found out that
04:35she was being exploited he decided to go to the authorities but unfortunately for him he was taken
04:43out just before he had the chance to the movie ended with jack finally understanding and knowing the
04:50truth behind his brother's murder and once he knew he seeked revenge on those responsible and that
04:58included cliff brumby we saw a scene towards the end of the film where jack once again confronted cliff
05:06brumby about his brother's death and this time jack knew the truth he just wanted to know if cliff was going
05:14to come clean once again once again you had brumby pleading his innocence you know saying that he had
05:22nothing to do with it but in reality he was involved so jack showing no remorse shoved brumby off the car
05:32pot roof indeed it was a uh a very violent way to uh to go out but you know you have to think that the
05:43character brumby you know he was an accessory to child molestation so uh yeah no sympathy from me
05:51and just when you thought it was all over jack was assassinated by a lone gunman that had been sent
06:01by keneer one moment jack was there you know standing tall in victory and the next he was dead
06:11it was a shocking moment and uh it definitely caught me off guard the uh first time i saw the film
06:18you know when you think about it even though jack did get his revenge on the gangster cyril keneer
06:26a man that was directly involved with his niece's abuse keneer still kind of got the upper hand he kind
06:35of got the last laugh by getting jack assassinated i guess you could say it was a bittersweet ending
06:45but uh yeah it was executed brilliantly for sure now re-watching get carter in today's world does show
06:55a stark contrast in how society has changed over the years it wasn't just the economic factors but also
07:04the gender dynamics and how women were treated or seen in the movie get carter was a story
07:13that sexualized women and highlighted their vulnerabilities in a male-dominated crime
07:23underworld a prime example of this would be the character doreen jack's niece who was coerced into
07:31appearing in this film where she was sexually assaulted i mean let's face it she was an innocent
07:40school girl you know she should not have been around those types of people yet she was dragged into
07:47this world of depravity and uh unexploited of course back then women didn't have the same voice or
07:57platform they do now and of course you know in the 21st century things have improved you know which is
08:03good and you know women have better equality i just found it interesting though to see this snapshot
08:10of british life back in the early 1970s and how such depictions of women would uh certainly not be
08:20accepted in today's world in terms of the performances michael cain was outstanding in the role as jack carter
08:30the sophisticated gangster who just wanted to find the truth behind his brother's death cain really did
08:39carry this movie you know he was the star and um you know he was just so charismatic on screen he was the
08:47perfect choice to you know lead this movie i just loved his portrayal you know of this guy carter who
08:55was relentless in you know finding the truth and didn't mind who stood in his way because he was
09:02going to take out anyone while always keeping this calm and cool demeanor his best scene had to be the
09:11moment when jack watched the pornographic film that featured his niece you know it was totally silent
09:19besides the noise of the projector and we saw the camera you know getting closer and closer
09:25to cain's face and um you know eventually he shed a tear as well um yeah just a a brilliant
09:34brilliant scene i also have to say that cain's performance as jack carter at times did kind of
09:44remind me of james bond if that makes sense you know with the sophistication but also the womanizing
09:55in a way it was kind of like a grittier version of james bond and uh yeah it was yeah either way just
10:04perfect casting for sure i also want to praise the actor ian hendry who played one of the goons
10:12eric pace hendry's character was a no-good sleazy scumbag who had some serious animosity towards jack carter
10:23now hendry was initially meant to star in the lead role he was meant to play jack carter
10:31but due to the actor's excessive drinking habits the director decided to cast michael cain instead
10:40so he was replaced still i thought hendry in the role of eric pace was really good he really played the
10:50perfect adversary for the character jack carter the musician and composer roy budd produced a very
10:59memorable score that complemented the movie's gritty visuals in particular the get carter theme that was
11:10used at the beginning and at the end of the movie it just brought a very um you know a nice high
11:19braille kind of touch to the film you know kind of sophisticated a very kind of suave kind of tone
11:25and uh you know that piece of music was so good you know that could stand on its own you know forget
11:34about the connections to the film itself roy budd was just such a talented composer um yeah you can just
11:41listen to that theme you know completely separate to everything else and still appreciate its greatness
11:48before we get into the dislikes i just want to mention the overall style and look and aesthetic
11:57of get carter there can be absolutely no denying that this movie especially for its time was a very
12:06well-made production and especially if you take into account the limited budget that they had
12:13um yeah just overall very impressive with what they were able to deliver the cinematographer wolfgang
12:21suchisky did a wonderful job and with his work he was able to give the film a distinctive style
12:29i was particularly taken back by how newcastle looked and how that was depicted in the film
12:37you know with the dark wet atmosphere the derelict buildings the smoky pubs it just looked like a very
12:46miserable place to be in the emphasis on natural light and muted colors really captured the grimness of
12:57the city and its industrial decay it seemed like some very harsh conditions and you know like they say
13:06it's uh it's uh it's grim up north it certainly was back then and uh yeah i just think that that was the
13:13reality for many people at the time and in a way get carter is inadvertently a sort of time capsule
13:25for britain in the early 1970s and so dislikes for get carter from 1971
13:34my biggest dislike for the film would have to be the lack of actress brit eklund who played anna
13:43jack's secret lover in the film now eklund had a very minor role as anna and uh well simply put
13:54she was wasted in this film you know when when she was on screen you know she just oozed charisma
14:02you know playing this sultry gangsta's mole and you know when she first showed up on screen
14:09i just automatically assumed that she was gonna be an integral part to the story but uh unfortunately
14:18that wasn't the case now upon seeing this movie again i did do some research online and discovered
14:26that actress brit eklund only begrudgingly took the role of anna because she was having some
14:34financial problems at the time you know reading that it um you know just made me kind of question
14:41how much money did she get because you know eklund's screen time was so limited i can't imagine that she
14:50would have received a huge paycheck anyways i just thought that it was a missed opportunity by the
14:58filmmakers not exploiting brit eklund's talents and abilities as a performer and so ratings for get carter
15:11from 1971 after much deliberation i am going to be rating this film a solid 7 out of 10 revisiting
15:24get carter was a thoroughly enjoyable experience with the film's no-nonsense attitude towards crime
15:33thrillers with michael kane's outstanding performance as jack carter and the movies unflinching
15:41portrayal of violence and corruption in my eyes get carter really was an achievement for british
15:49cinema director mike hodges definitely made the right call by deciding to shoot the film on location
15:57in newcastle as it added some realism to the production everything felt much more tangible and
16:06believable and the violence itself it felt way more visceral it's one of those films that for sure i'll be you know
16:15re-watching again in the future it's just a outstanding achievement in british cinema and holds up against
16:23any kind of 70s crime drama if any of you guys out there have seen get carter then please let me know your
16:30thoughts and memories in the comments section below for those who have not it's a recommendation from
16:39me you know i gave it a 7 out of 10 and um yeah it's deserving of that it really is worth your time
16:45so yeah go out and see it if you haven't already and for you know people that like michael kane that may
16:52have not seen this one yet it's a must watch and well that is all from me today guys i do hope you've
