00:00Normandy, 1944. Breakthrough.
00:14For tank commanders, there was no real front line.
00:16They met the enemy where he could be found.
00:18A few weeks after D-Day, U.S. intelligence discovered that a panzer tank column
00:22had been redirected during the night to take positions near Folley.
00:26Our forces were ordered to engage them.
00:28The trap was set.
00:58Once the enemy was engaged, individual initiative took over.
01:15The front was fluid.
01:16Small infantry tank teams drove ahead, often to find that the enemy had closed ranks behind them.
01:22Tank detachments found themselves cut off from command.
01:26Spearhead tanks pushed on, even though cut off.
01:29Infantry units met up with them, and together they pushed on, attacking as they went.
01:33Supplies ran short or disappeared entirely.
01:37Tanks were low on fuel.
01:38They fought on.
01:39They fought on.
01:39They fought very quickly.
01:40V Family ships went, and tested by her fledgare.
01:41They fought...
01:42They fought
02:09All right, take 10. Off the road.
02:15Take 10.
02:16Wiggins, are you going to give that pup an American name or a French name?
02:42I'm going to call him Harry.
02:44Why not?
02:46Those tanks got out behind us about here.
02:48We lost the battalion here.
02:51We angled north and east, more or less.
02:57This road isn't even on the map.
03:01From the rate we've been traveling, I'd say this is our position.
03:04What's your guess?
03:06How about yours, Lieutenant?
03:08Thanks for the load of confidence.
03:11This town got Vray right off the main road.
03:14It's just beyond the edge of the woods.
03:16We'd be sitting ducks if we moved out in the open while it's still daylight.
03:21I'm open for opinions, Sergeant.
03:23What's yours?
03:25Well, I figure we have about an hour and a half.
03:28Before what?
03:30We know what's back there coming our way.
03:33Tanks.
03:34When they catch up to us, we'll be sitting ducks.
03:37Period.
03:38We'll be sitting ducks.
03:39Period.
03:40We'll see you next time after.
03:49There is nothing done.
03:53Jane is now.
03:55She's here.
03:57I'm home.
03:59It's easy to ask a large action
04:02We're free in the land who have gone astray.
04:08Bah, bah, bah.
04:12We're little black sheep who have gone astray.
04:17Bah, bah, bah.
04:21Ellie.
04:21Green?
04:21Yes, Archer.
04:23Knock it off.
04:27Boy, you're mean this morning.
04:28You're mean.
04:30Yeah, real mean.
04:32You can't tell who's around, so just keep your eyes open.
04:35You get plenty of sack time, we'll reach our objective.
04:38Objective?
04:39What objective?
04:40Name one.
04:41Oh, Paris?
04:44Paris is by away.
05:02Hi, mitt.
05:04I put it on!
05:07Yes.
05:10Hey, mitt.
05:11I put it.
05:15I want you to cut.
05:16What if you leave the house around?
05:19There's no direction.
05:20You're our mêmes gear.
05:22I'm going to questions.
05:23Bye-bye!
05:24Be still?
05:25Hey.
05:26Hooray!
05:27Hooray!
05:28Hooray!
05:28You all right?
05:41Yeah, forget it. When I get me a Purple Heart, I'll end it.
05:44You see him, huh, Doc?
05:46Well.
05:58Easy, Harry. Easy. Quiet, Puppet. It's gonna be all right.
06:09Harry.
06:21Lieutenant, I'll take half the men and try to flank them.
06:25Right.
06:58Hey, they ain't stopping.
07:19Hey!
07:22Hey!
07:29Get off!
07:31Oh, now, wait a minute, sir.
07:33Now, look, Sergeant.
07:34You heard what I said, get off.
07:35Wait a minute.
07:36You just got us out of this mess, and we appreciate it.
07:40But the way I see it, and you just stop me if I'm wrong, it's all the same war.
07:44Now, we could use a ride.
07:45I'm not running a bus line here.
07:47I'm low on fuel.
07:48I got all the load I can carry.
07:49Now, if you want to stick with me, you can walk.
07:51Sergeant, you in communication with your unit commander?
07:56No, sir.
07:57Not anymore, sir.
07:59The captain was killed about 30 miles back.
08:01There were seven panzers and three of us.
08:03This is all that's left.
08:04Now, what's your objective?
08:05Stay alive.
08:07Let the war catch up with me.
08:09Sergeant, I know you're low on fuel.
08:11So are we.
08:13Well, we've come just as far as you have since last night, only we did it on foot.
08:17Now, I know you'd like a bunch of paddle feet along with you, just as much as we'd like a ride on this tank.
08:23Is that an order?
08:24If you want to make it one, Sergeant.
08:26Yes, sir.
08:36What's eating him?
08:38I don't know.
08:38What about, uh, what about Wiggins, Lieutenant?
08:47After the vision breaks out, we'll come back and get him.
08:55Right, Lieutenant.
08:55All right, man, let's go.
09:13Hop on.
09:15Looks like we've got a ride.
13:15Thank you, sir.
15:57Hey, Christy.
16:01Hey, Christy.
16:03Get up here.
16:04I'm going to go.
16:05I'm going to go.
16:06I'm going to fuel my vehicle and move out.
16:08Unless the lieutenant has some objections.
16:10You're on your own, Sergeant.
16:12Thank you, sir.
16:14You may have some problems.

29:28yeah
29:49you
29:58you
30:00you
30:08you
30:10you
30:12you
30:14you
30:16Oh, my God.
30:46Oh, my God.
31:16Oh, my God.
31:46I wouldn't go in there if I were you.
32:07You're off the limits.
32:08That's official, Sergeant.
32:14Dane?
32:14I was talking to Morello and Christie.
32:20And they told me something.
32:22Something that's keeping me from putting my hands on you and just throwing you right out in that street.
32:26They told me that you were a spoiled priest.
32:34Is that what they call me?
32:36That's right.
32:37Well, I can explain a lot of things, like you blowing that cross off that church, going after the Padre the way you did.
32:44And I can understand why a man is trying to get something out of his system.
32:48But one war is enough to fight at one time.
32:51So why don't you just forget about the one inside you until this one is over?
32:54I don't need any advice from you, Sergeant.
32:56There are a lot of things that Christie and Morello didn't tell you.
33:01You want to talk about it?
33:02No, I don't.
33:08Well, you better, because we're going to tangle if you keep doing what you're doing.
33:17A week before I was to be ordained, I got into a fight.
33:21It wasn't the first time I had trouble.
33:24And they were right.
33:26I deserved everything that happened to me.
33:31Sergeant.
33:32Did you ever have anything get away from me?
33:35Something that you really wanted, that you loved, that you thought you couldn't be without?
33:38But you didn't know it until it was too late?
33:42Well, that's what happened to me.
33:43I wanted to be a priest more than anything in this life.
33:47Anything.
33:49I even thought of going back and asking him to forgive me.
33:53And I think they would have.
33:56Why didn't you?
33:58Because of the war.
34:00The war won't last forever.
34:02Oh, won't it?
34:05Do you think I could go back now and start all over?
34:08A lot of us will.
34:09Well, it's not the same for me.
34:11You know how many men I've killed.
34:20You know how many I've killed because I had to?
34:24You think it's easier for me because you're closer to God?
34:29Well, whatever we do, whatever happens to us, we're going to have to live with it.
34:36And if we get out of here alive and get back home, we're just going to have to learn to live with it.
34:42That's the way I figure.
34:43That's not the way I figure.
34:44No, you want to know why?
34:45Because you've got no guts.
34:46That's why you got yourself thrown out like you did.
34:50Because way down deep inside, you didn't think you were man enough.
34:54And you want to know something, Sergeant?
34:55Sergeant, you were right.
35:05Can I go in now?
35:07Why?
35:08What do you want to do in there?
35:10You want to grab that padre?
35:11It's not going to make you feel better, is it?
35:16I want to go to confession.
35:17What do you want to do in there?
35:47What do you want, Sergeant?
35:48He says he wants to confess.
35:53You speak French?
35:59No.
36:00No French.
36:17Oh, Father, forgive me for what I've done to you and to the church.
36:37Please forgive me for what I have done to you.
36:42Please forgive me for what I have done.
37:06I thought you said he couldn't speak French.
37:14That's a lot.
37:19You're talking like they were friends.
37:22They are friends.
37:24Come on.
37:25Let's leave them alone.
37:26Loves perdite.
37:42Who lost shape?
37:46Hasta perdite.
37:52Who lost shape?
37:56Oh, my God.
38:05I am not worthy that thou should enter under my roof.
38:11Say but the word, and my soul shall be healed.
38:26Mr. Hoffman.
38:29Yeah?
38:30The priest.
38:31What's with him?
38:32There is nothing to wreck it.
38:34The Americans have it.
38:36What's is, when you say where we are?
38:43He will nothing say.
38:45A good hirte brings his herd to no one in danger.
38:47He will have to leave you here.
38:51Tell me, my father.
38:53They will all kill us.
38:54No, we will do what they say.
38:56They are killed.
38:57They have killed all the people from the village of the south.
39:00Tell me, I ask you, think about children.
39:03That's what I think, children.
39:06They are these massacres.
39:08I'm old, it doesn't make anything.
39:10But children...
39:10I'm old, I'm old.
39:11I'm old.
39:12I'm old.
39:12I'm old.
39:13I'm old.
39:13I'm old.
39:14I'm old.
39:15I'm old.
39:24Sounds like a division's getting ready to break out.
39:28We too soon to suit me.
39:30I get lonely.
39:34Sergeant, what do you make of Dane?
39:36It seems he and the Padre learned their Latin from the same book.
39:43Only the sergeant didn't get to graduate.
39:46Who told you that?
39:48Morello and Christie.
39:51I guess a man can carry a live bomb inside him just so long.
39:56Who put it there?
39:58Well, he did, but that doesn't make it any easier.
40:02Being a tank sergeant isn't the best way to...
40:04Becoming a priest.
40:08Meaning he doesn't think he can get there from here.
40:13Lieutenant, you killed ten men today, maybe more.
40:16Than it was yesterday.
40:18Than the day before.
40:23It's like I keep saying...
40:26It's a stinking war.
40:28Lieutenant, it's the Padre.
40:35Lieutenant, it's the Padre.
40:47The officer will be killed in the church.
40:50He will be killed by the banter.
40:53From the church.
40:55Get out of the church.
40:56Let's go.
41:01Oh, mon dieu.
41:04Come with me.
41:05Achtung, Achtung.
