00:01And on piano, the legendary Nicky Hopkins.
00:15It was this unique marriage of the rawness of the electric guitars
00:21and the rhythm section and then the wider palette of the piano.
00:26The piano says, has all the colors, can say everything.
00:30And a guy who's as talented as Nicky can take a simple song
00:34and fill it with all kinds of extra meaning and feeling.
00:38Nicky could do the absolute incredible,
00:41you would believe the Buddhist family's in the room,
00:44which for a white English kid in the 1960s was absolutely amazing.
00:48He didn't even realize how amazing he was
00:50until you would take his contribution out.
00:52And then you realize, oh man, that's, you know.
00:55He's adding stuff in there that broadens and deepens the songs,
00:59or he's like right out front.
01:02He could entrance.
01:03He could play just about anything.
01:07It was inspiring.
01:09He was talented.
01:11He was invisible.
01:13It's an instinct.
01:14It's an art form being a good session.
01:18It absolutely blew my mind to see this list of such classic songs
01:24that are still being played today.
01:26And he performed on those.
01:28I started listening to what he's added and it's like, it's genius.
01:31Absolute genius.
01:33Over a 30-year period, Nicky Hopkins would play on over 250 albums.
01:44In the golden age of rock and roll, bands consisted of guitar and drums
01:49until they realized that the piano added harmonic richness and melodic flair.
01:56Then along came the legendary pianist, Nicky Hopkins.
02:18He was just putting together on the piano.
02:20He took part of the piano.
02:21They came in the together and gave him a little bit of the piano.
02:23They came out of a new piano that I was able to get.
02:25And then later, the piano turned back up.
02:27He was like, I remember, you guys did.
02:28And he's able to get me to play with the piano,
02:29and he was able to play with that piano and piano.
02:31And then he was able to play with his piano.
02:33And then he was able to play with that piano.
02:35And then he was able to play the piano.
02:37So it was like, bye for the piano.
