00:00I'm not pretty.
00:19I mean, I'm just average. So this is what I have to do to make up for it.
00:30I'm too scared to get Sanko for surgery like all the other Korean girls.
00:50And I wasn't lucky enough to be born with them like my friend Jane.
01:00Even if I did get Sanko for surgery, I'd always feel fake.
01:10Like, how could I ever stop wondering if someone liked me for the real me?
01:16God, I wish I was pretty.
01:20God, I wish I was pretty.
01:24Hi, I'm Hannah Chang, and I'm the writer, director, and lead actor of I Wish I Were Pretty.
01:30This story follows the protagonist, Arum, which means beautiful in Korean, and her resentments against her beautiful best friend Jane, as in plain Jane.
01:46Arum believes that she's unpretty because she has monolidized eyes, which means that she doesn't have double eyelids or Sanko fruit in Korean.
01:52Whereas her best friend does have them, and she's also just so beautiful that she could be mistaken for a K-pop idol.
01:56And she's got a lot of insecurity against her best friend because she's got a lot of insecurity against her best friend because of that.
02:16So when a man humiliates Adam in front of Jane, she has to figure out whether she's going to let this long-standing sore spot fester or whether she's going to deal with it.
02:27I wish I were pretty is a phrase that I have thought to myself, maybe not quite on a daily basis, but pretty often.
02:34A lot of experiences that Adam has are based on my own, and they were painful, they still are, but I'm trying to redeem them by turning them into art.
02:43This film is important to me, of course, but I really hope it's also important to everyone who encounters it,
02:49because I understand that the struggle to feel like you are enough is felt by almost everybody, regardless of race and gender.
02:57And it's my hope that I can offer everyone who sees it an alternative to holding ourselves up to the standards of the world and offer a way to maybe love ourselves a little bit more.
03:11It's like a love letter to myself and everyone else in the world who is struggling to accept themselves.
03:17We would greatly appreciate any contribution you could make to our campaign.
03:21What the funds are going to be going to are paying for our cast and crew, feeding our cast and crew, equipment rentals, and basically anything else that we need to make this the best possible version of this project that we can.
03:32Thank you so much for watching. Please consider donating and stay tuned.
