00:00So in Pakistan, girls decorate with embroidered shalwar kameez and they decorate trucks with
00:08these glamorous stickers.
00:10So we have found a shop here on the side of the road and these guys are making the
00:13truck art.
00:14They're making the stickers with their hand.
00:16It's really amazing.
00:17Can you look at each and every detail?
00:19So these are all hand cuts.
00:20So there's this black line, then this white and on white there's a pink and green.
00:30Many countries have symbolic things that represent their culture.
00:36The UK has red telephone booths, the Philippines has jeepneys, Italy has gondola rides.
00:42And here in Pakistan, it's all about the buses.
00:49We found like a pod of bus drivers.
00:51They all kind of hang out in one spot and we're asking them a few questions about what it's
00:54like to be a bus driver in Karachi.
00:56This is the public transport car, okay?
00:58Are you a bus driver?
00:59A bus driver.
01:00I am a driver.
01:01How many years have you been a driver?
01:0220 years.
01:03And how do you deal with the horrible traffic on the streets?
01:06Traffic police?

01:12How many hours every day do you drive?
01:1514, 14.
01:16That's so many.
01:17The buses that you will find all over Pakistan are colorful, spiritual, and decked out vehicles
01:23that have evolved in the most innovative way since the 1940s.
01:27Sikh transporters used to paint portraits of their spiritual gurus on their trucks, which
01:32eventually was caught on by the Muslims who painted their prophets.
01:35When Pakistan gained independence in 1947, the entire country began pimping out their
01:40buses in portraits, which lasted until the early 1970s when the global hippie era influenced
01:45the vibrant bus art to transform into complex floral patterns and poetic calligraphy.
01:51It's a very good quote about God here.
01:53Everything belongs to God.
01:58So it's somehow like that.
02:00Now, these buses have become a cultural phenomenon of Pakistan and they're impossible not to notice
02:06while in Karachi.
02:07These buses are the iconic symbol of Karachi.
02:10Every time you hop on one, it's a different experience.
02:13Oh, the pink one, the next one.
02:15Yeah, the pink one.
02:16So yeah, we get a lot of attention in here, but it's good attention.
02:20I love it.
02:21And the best part is that it's only 10 cents a ride.
02:24Thank you, thank you, thank you.
