00:00They're seeing me with these dark glasses.
00:02I've shot my pictures with this eye,
00:05and this other eye is now having trouble staying open.
00:08Didn't think I was trying to be a big shot.
00:15I think we should start this where it began.
00:19I used to go out on the street
00:20trying to emulate Henry Cartier-Bresson,
00:24and usually my timing was off by a few seconds.
00:27These files are just filled with stories.
00:32If you name a subject, I probably can come up with it.
00:37I once went going through a hospital
00:39where they were trying to steal needles.
00:42And sometimes working with groups like that
00:45is a good entree into being able to do emotional stories
00:49about people who need to be talked about.
00:53We had a ceremony today.
00:55What did you win it for?
00:56I'm a photographer.
00:58And so this is your crew?
01:00Yes, sir.
01:01I worked on probably 400 movies.
01:06There were two movie posters that were done on this very couch.
01:11Another was Ferris Bueller, right on this couch.
01:16Throughout my life, I've been very involved
01:18with civil rights and with justice,
01:21and it's something I care very, very much about.
01:23I asked my editor if I could do a photo essay on James Baldwin.
01:29We saw a back door which said,
01:32Colored entrance only.
01:33I photographed the third summer march.
01:37I always feel that the things that are important in a photograph
01:42were emotion, design, and information.
01:45If you can get all three of those into your photograph,
01:49I think you're doing okay.
01:54I've always enjoyed being a fly on the wall
01:57and wait for that moment
01:58when there's something in someone's eyes
02:01and the way they look
02:02which gives you a hint as to who they are
02:05and what's very special about them.
