In 1859 Swiss businessman Henry Dunant witnessed the carnage and suffering of the Battle of Solferino in northern Italy. He organised volunteers to help treat wounded soldiers. His experience of the battle and ideas to alleviate the sufferings of war led to the creation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. (Michele Andina/swissinfo.ch)
