Euromaxx reporter Sarah Hucal visits Munich's Oktoberfest for the very first time. As an American, what's her verdict of the event?
Transcript
00:00I'm in Munich for my very first Oktoberfest. I came prepared. I have my
00:09DĂĽrndel and I'm really excited to go in one of the beer tents later, of course.
00:13But although I've lived in Germany for over a decade, there are some things here
00:17that really surprised me. I'm gonna tell you what they are. And I'll also tell you
00:23everything you need to know about Oktoberfest. We'll check out what there
00:26is to do, learn about Bavarian traditions, and what exactly brings millions of
00:31people here from all over the world. Everyone's here for the best party in
00:37Germany. It's the best party in Germany, yeah. The best party in Germany. Party here.
00:47You might be surprised to know that Oktoberfest is free to enter. You don't
00:52need a ticket. And it takes place on this huge area. A lot of it is a fairground.
00:59Which I have to say I was not really expecting. I come from the U.S. where Oktoberfest is basically
01:07seen as an alcohol-fueled party for adults. But actually there are lots of families and
01:13even little kids here. So this is really a family-friendly event that celebrates
01:17the Bavarian traditions. I'm here on opening day for the big parade. The tent
01:23owners, event hosts, and their families arrive on carriages to open the 16-day celebration.
01:30It's so cool to see the brass bands in traditional clothing.
01:35So Bavarian. I love it.
01:38Over six million people come here every year. Tourists from the U.S. make up the
01:43largest group of international visitors. But what does Oktoberfest mean to Bavarians?
01:50Tradition. A lot of tradition. I think it's so nice that so many countries come together
01:55to peacefully see what this festival is all about and enjoy it together.
02:01It surprised me to see how many people are wearing the Bavarian attire, the Durndl and Lederhosen.
02:06Honestly, this is not something you see in Berlin. So for me, it's pretty bizarre. I've never seen anything like it.
02:15But now, the main event.
02:18It's time to go into one of your tents. I'm very excited. Here we go.
02:24There are 35 tents at Oktoberfest. Even if they're called tents, some are giant wooden structures with space for up to 10,000 people.
02:33My God. I'm kind of shocked, to be honest. There are tons of people. It's crazy. I've never seen something like this.
02:46The Oktoberfest waitstaff are famous for carrying many of these heavy mugs, called Maas-KlĂĽge.
02:53Filled with beer, each weighs about two kilo. Nadia has been working at Oktoberfest for two decades.
02:58What do you like about your job here at Oktoberfest?
03:02For one thing, every year it is a real challenge, of course, to see how much can I do.
03:08On the other hand, as a mother, it's still 16 days away from home, which is great. And it's fun. You can be yourself. You meet people from all over the world.
03:17And the beer mugs?
03:18Well, we've got girls here. They're able to carry 14 beers and make their way through the crowds and they have no problem with that.
03:27I stick by between 8 and 10.
03:30I felt compelled to give it a try.
03:32Come around, pull it towards you.
03:34Woo!
03:36Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I could do this. Next year, Oktoberfest.
03:41That's enough now.
03:43I ordered the classic beer and a half chicken.
03:47It's already here in the Scottish, yet.
03:49It's very important that you have a rash in Germany, because you sometimes really need it.
03:54The waitstaff are paid on commission, so be generous when you tip.
03:59My fresh Helles beer brewed just for Oktoberfest. It's around 6.2%.
04:07One, two, three, two, five!
04:12Oh my gosh! My first time at Oktoberfest. It was full of subscribers. I really had a blast. Great people, good food, amazing beer, so much more.
04:21And how about you? What did you like about my trip to Oktoberfest? And would you like to go?
