00:00Hi, I know today's gonna be difficult, so I won't ask you how you're doing
00:26Just, just doesn't seem real
00:32Yeah, I know
00:35I got here early in case you needed help with anything before the service
00:43I think, I think we're good, Michael's here somewhere, he's handing all the logistics today
00:48Okay, of course he is, I'm glad we have him to lean on
00:53Knowing that Sonny and Carly won't be here today
00:57No, no, Monica blamed Sonny for a lot
01:01Taking me away from the family
01:05Just took Monica so long to realize that it was my fault
01:11And it was my choice
01:13By keeping my distance from the court remains, I know I caused my mom a little bit
01:18I think
01:20What happened in the past
01:22Only made you living at that house for the past year
01:26That much sweeter for your mom
01:29She was beyond happy to have her son back under her roof
01:34Why do you understand that and he doesn't?
01:58And what does that say about my marriage?
02:00I can't answer that
02:02But I also know that it's a lot easier to be brilliant
02:06When it's not your marriage on the block
02:09You are a very insightful man
02:13And an irreplaceable friend
02:16That's a great picture of her
02:22But she didn't really take any bad ones, did she?
02:29She didn't believe in them
02:30Just another reason I respect that woman
02:34How are you holding up?
02:40I don't know
02:40I know I have to say goodbye to Monica today, but
02:45There's some part of me that just
02:48Doesn't believe that it's possible
02:51I mean, none of this is happening
02:55And even when she was sick
02:56She still had such a presence in this house
02:59In this family
03:00Whether she's physically here or not
03:04It doesn't really matter
03:07This will always be Monica's house
03:11I'm so glad we're all heading over to the church together
03:24That makes it seem like this day might be
03:28A bearable
03:29Yeah, it does
03:30Actually, I gotta head over right now
03:33I checked on something for Michael
03:34But I'll see you at the church
03:35Okay
03:35Love you
03:37Love you too
03:38Sweetheart, are you ready to go?
03:42I don't know if I'll ever be ready
03:44But
03:46I'm gonna stay strong
03:48Keep it together
03:49For Monica
03:51You got the letter?
03:55Right here
03:55What are you all standing around for?
04:00Let's go say goodbye to Monica
04:01Oh, good
04:06I was just about to call the nurse
04:08But maybe you could help me?
04:11Hmm
04:11What's going on?
04:16You can't possibly be ready for release yet
04:19So
04:19Why are you out of bed, huh?
04:23Much less all dressed up
04:25I'm going to my mother's memorial
04:30Jason
04:33I am so sorry for your loss
04:38Thank you
04:43Thank you for coming
04:45Oh, of course
04:47Now, speaking as the mayor
04:49It's, uh
04:49It's impossible to overstate
04:52How important a pillar
04:54Of this community
04:56Your mother was
04:57She was right at the heart of it all
05:00And I respected her
05:02More than I can possibly say
05:04Thank you for saying that
05:06She's also a friend of mine
05:09And I'll miss her a lot
05:11Yeah, me too
05:12Yes, I'm sure
05:13I want you to know
05:16That my mother was planning
05:17On coming today
05:18But at the last minute
05:19She came down with a bug
05:20And she wasn't able to travel
05:21Well, she's
05:22She's okay, right?
05:23Oh, yes
05:24She's okay
05:24She'll be fine
05:25You know, it's funny
05:27I can still remember
05:28The day
05:29That my mother and Monica
05:31Made peace with each other
05:32But in the end
05:34My mother thought of Monica
05:36As a friend
05:37Despite all their past differences
05:40Oh
05:43Thank you for coming
05:45It's the least I can do
05:49Your grandmother
05:50Was an extraordinary woman
05:52I'm just glad
05:54That I got a little time with her
05:55Since I, uh
05:57Got back
05:59Yeah
06:00Let's go with that
06:01I'll always be grateful
06:03That she let me live
06:04At the Quartermains
06:05When my dad was married
06:06To Tracy
06:07And even when Monica
06:09Threatened to throw out
06:09My dad and Tracy
06:11She made sure to tell me
06:13That I could stay
06:14Yeah, that doesn't surprise me
06:16Yeah, my grandma's toughness
06:18It was how she protected her
06:20It's all the time
06:21I think that runs
06:24In the family
06:24Dr. Quarterman
06:34Was one of a kind
06:36I admire her so much
06:38Everyone at the hospital did
06:40It's true
06:41We were all so honored
06:42To walk the halls with her
06:44I'm a little surprised
06:46That Jason of all people
06:48Was playing the role of host today
06:49Yeah
06:51You know, the family
06:52Was supposed to be here by now
06:53But
06:53Looks like he's handling pretty well
06:56Excuse me
06:58Michael
07:02I'm so sorry for your loss
07:04Your grandmother was
07:06A remarkable woman
07:07Thank you
07:08And thank you both
07:09For being here
07:10It's our honor to be here
07:12We should go get us
07:14Yes
07:14All this small talk
07:21Must be torture for you
07:22I can take it from here
07:24It is, but it's okay
07:27I want to thank everyone
07:30Who's coming today
07:31Thank them for honoring my mother
07:34Are you sure
07:36That this is really
07:38You know, a good idea
07:39Because from what I was told
07:40Monica's memorial is
07:41Private
07:43Service
07:44I'm her son
07:46I'm her son
07:46Yeah
07:47The son is still recovering from gunshot wounds
07:49And she should still be in a hospital bed
07:51Drew
07:53Nobody humanly expects you to
07:55Go ahead and say it, Martin
07:56The family doesn't want me there
07:59Well, I don't care about them
08:01I don't care
08:02About what they think of me
08:04I have every right
08:06To be there
08:07Yeah, maybe so
08:08But things between you and Monica
08:11This is not about how
08:12How Monica and I ended up
08:14Okay?
08:14She's my mother
08:15She loved me
08:17And she accepted me
08:19The second that she found out
08:20That I was Alan's son
08:21And that meant something to us
08:24Even with the way things were lately
08:26Okay?
08:26She's still
08:27She reached out to me
08:29What'd you say?
08:35I never returned her call
08:37I just, I
08:39I thought that she was calling
08:41Because of the steps that I'd taken
08:42To, to protect Scal
08:45You mean the restraining orders
08:46You've taken out of members of her family
08:48I thought that she was
08:49Gonna side with the rest of the family
08:51Against me
08:52And
08:52And I'll never know if I was right
08:57I just never
08:58I never imagined
08:59That it would be the last time
09:00I ever got a chance to talk to her
09:01No
09:01No, how could you?
09:04I think with everything going on
09:05I just, um
09:06I lost sight of how important she was to me
09:11And I'm always gonna regret that
09:14But I'm not gonna let my anger
09:18Against the rest of the family
09:21Stop me from saying goodbye
09:23To my mom
09:24Thank you
09:29Thank you both for coming today
09:31Of course
09:33You know, my mom
09:35Um, she always told me
09:37How much she liked it
09:38When you dropped by
09:38I loved hanging out with Monica
09:41She was always such a good friend to me
09:43And when Maxie had her heart surgery
09:46It was Monica's hands
09:48That gave my daughter new life
09:50She was a brilliant surgeon
09:52In fact, she was just
09:54Brilliant, period, you know
09:56It used to drive me a little bit crazy
09:58When everybody always talked about
09:59The amazing Dr. Monica
10:01Quartermain
10:02But truth be told
10:03I was jealous
10:04But, you know
10:07Truth really be told
10:08Monica was no saint, actually
10:10Stop it
10:11She was a brilliant
10:13Doctor
10:15And, um, her family mattered more to her than anything
10:19It's nice that the Quartermain's asked you to speak
10:25Do you know what you're gonna say?
10:28I've got a pretty good idea
10:29It's actually kind of hard to narrow it down
10:32Because Monica and I have been through so much together
10:35I've been hearing great things about the wellness group
10:40Saved my life
10:42So I've heard
10:43The one here at GH is almost up and running
10:45I'm thinking maybe that's something that I'd like to get involved in
10:48Well, that's right
10:49You're going after your degree
10:50Trying
10:51It's not easy
10:52Oh, but look who I'm talking to
10:55The woman who has a full-time career
10:57And a family
10:58And battles a life-threatening disease
11:00And wins
11:01And still has time to launch a major support group
11:05Please
11:06You are exhausting me
11:08And I will take all the help I can give
11:10I think I will just speak from the heart
11:14And hope that I can find the words to express what Monica meant to me
11:22I hope it's okay that I'm here
11:25I'm glad you came
11:27I know it probably wasn't an easy decision
11:30I'm not here as a member of the family
11:34I'm here for Monica
11:35She didn't even know we were related
11:38And she welcomed me into her home
11:40I wanted to honor her memory
11:42I just hope other people don't get the wrong idea
11:44You can't control what other people think
11:48I appreciate you being here
11:51Monica would have been so touched that you came
12:06I didn't know Monica long
12:09But she couldn't have been better than me
12:10Wanted to pay my respects
12:13She loved hearing you play
12:14She always talked about how talented you are
12:17Sure
12:18Better go find my seat now
12:21Yeah
12:22Yeah, I mean, you're welcome to sit with us
12:26If you'd like
12:27Oh, thanks
12:27I'm okay
12:30I'll see you all in there
12:32Yeah
12:32Well, uh, I mean, he's here, right?
12:48So that's a good thing
12:49Yeah, it's progress
12:51Gio's here
12:54He wanted to honor Monica
12:56Baby steps
12:58Sorry, we're a little late
13:23Thank you for welcoming me, everyone
13:25Actually, Jason took care of that
13:28That would have made your mother very happy
13:31It's time to get this started
13:35Come on,2020
13:37You don't need to know
13:51You're welcome
13:52To be honest
13:52Who ÓInk
13:55Do of you know
13:57I feelأن everyone
13:58Somebody may be
13:58Remember
13:59You're welcome
14:00Bye
14:00Bye
14:00Bye
14:01Bye
14:01Bye
14:02Bye
14:02Bye
14:03Bye
14:04Drew, I'm not questioning your right to be there.
14:21I'm just wondering if it's what Monica would have wanted.
14:26I know it is.
14:27Just like I know that we would have reconciled if we had more time.
14:35She wouldn't have called me if she'd given up on me.
14:40Look, we loved each other.
14:42She's the only mother I've ever known.
14:49Hi.
14:51I rolled the dice and brought some with me.
14:54I'll sign.
14:57And I'm not going to let the quarter mains keep me from Monica's celebration of life.
15:09They've already kept me from her actual life.
15:11And I'm certainly not going to let Jason pretend like he's Monica's only son.
15:17You know, you already sound angry and you haven't even left the room.
15:22Yeah, well, I am angry.
15:24Exactly.
15:24And pardon me, but you just got finished saying you didn't want that anger to stand in the way of your ability to mourn for your mother.
15:31So I think you should be honest and ask yourself, you're showing up at that church really about Monica?
15:37Or is it just another way for you to screw with your family?
15:44On behalf of my family, I want to thank you all for coming today.
15:47We're here to honor Monica Bard-Quartermain.
15:54Now, I'm sure none of you will be surprised to know that Monica had some very strong opinions about how this memorial should go.
16:03She was very clear that she did not want this to be a sad occasion.
16:09Rather, she wanted us to have a gathering of friends and family to remember her and to celebrate her life.
16:19And I think Monica was right.
16:25As usual, this is a celebration.
16:29Because we were all lucky to have known Monica and to have spent quality time with her, whether it was personally or professionally.
16:43Finally, I cherish the years that I had with Monica.
16:53She was the anchor of our family.
16:56And she was always ready to welcome people into her house.
17:04Oh, come on, Tracy.
17:06Let's not argue.
17:07We're going to be welcoming a new baby into my house.
17:10The house that Alan gave me.
17:13Oh, God, Monica!
17:15Can you let one day go by without...
17:18Why are you laughing?
17:20Because it gets you every time.
17:23I have to be honest with you.
17:26Our house is...
17:29Just feels very empty.
17:31Without her.
17:34And I think we're all a little lost without Monica.
17:37When you stood up for Drew as being part of this family, that's really when you became Isis in my book.
17:47You know, it's not going to be easy for him.
17:49People are tough.
17:50Well, he is.
17:52He's tough.
17:53And so are you, Olivia.
17:54And this place wouldn't really be a home without you being here.
18:04I want you to think of this as your house, Olivia.
18:08It's going to take us some time to figure out how to live our lives without our love and our guidance.
18:20But at least for today, we don't have to do that.
18:26Because Monica has left one final message for all of us.
18:33To my dear friends and family, thank you for being a part of my life.
18:46I have so many beautiful memories of all of you that I hope you do too.
18:53Please, share them with each other.
18:56And be happy.
19:01I'm sorry to leave you, but I've had a wonderful life that I truly loved.
19:09Just as I love all of you.
19:12I've known Monica almost my entire life because my grandmother, Audrey Hardy, considered her to be one of her closest friends.
19:33And they worked together at General Hospital.
19:35And my grandmother, who's not easily impressed, used to tell me that she had the utmost respect for Monica as a doctor.
19:48So when I started working at GH, you can imagine I was pretty intimidated to work with the doctor, Quartermain, chief of staff.
19:59But it turns out I didn't need to be intimidated because Monica was so patient and so willing to teach anyone who was willing to learn, no matter their position.
20:16When she looked at all of us, she saw people.
20:21She didn't see titles.
20:22She saw people.
20:24And that's exactly how she saw her patients too.
20:28You know, they were people that she spent time with and connected with.
20:34And she treated them with honesty and compassion.
20:40And they loved her for it.
20:43And it was the same for all of us, all the staff at GH.
20:49We were her second family and she took care of us.
20:54And she encouraged us every single day to be the best version of ourselves.
21:05And we loved her for that.
21:09She also inspired me to be the best version of myself.
21:15And on the days that I just couldn't, she forgave me.
21:23And I loved her for that.
21:29I wish I'd gotten to know my grandchild.
21:33I know.
21:34It doesn't matter how I know.
21:36I just do.
21:37Dr. Quartermain.
21:39Elizabeth, I am a widow.
21:41And I've lost Emily.
21:43I've lost AJ.
21:43Hey, Jason is my only surviving child.
21:49You tell me, if you were me, wouldn't you want to know if you had another grandchild?
21:58I was really lucky to be a part of both of Monica's families.
22:04And my son, Jake, was really lucky to be her grandson.
22:13Good morning.
22:15First of all, I have to say that I was truly honored when the Quartermains asked me to speak here this morning.
22:22Like Elizabeth, I, too, knew Monica for most of my life.
22:29As a matter of fact, some of you may know this.
22:31When I was a young teenager, 15 years old, I volunteered at General Hospital as a candy striper.
22:40And that's when I met Monica.
22:45And I was just so impressed with how poised she was, you know?
22:50And then as the years went on, I watched her navigate her way around the Quartermain family.
22:59Something that I think even the Quartermains themselves might say is not such an easy task.
23:06But then again, every family has their own unique way of expressing their love.
23:14And even though Monica married into the Quartermains, she was a Quartermain.
23:20Through and through.
23:23As a matter of fact, another job that I had when I was a young woman was working for Monica's father-in-law,
23:30Edward Quartermain, who was a formidable and intimidating man.
23:35But even at my tender age, I could see how much Edward truly loved and respected Monica.
23:46For your father's sake, I hope that we can all live happy lives from now on.
23:51You do love him as much as I do, don't you?
23:57Yes, I do.
23:59And I know the reason that he is feeling as well as he is.
24:04Because you've taken such good care of him since he's had his heart attack.
24:08You know, I think I could go to like you, little by little.
24:12Now, now, don't get carried away.
24:13I know that Monica saw caring for her patients as an act of reverence.
24:37The only people she loved more were her own family.
24:43And I know she loved them very much.
24:46And she treasured what time she had with them.
24:49Sadly, Monica's life also saw an awful lot of loss.
24:56She lost her son, AJ, and her two daughters, Emily and Don.
25:02And then finally, her husband, Alan.
25:06But those losses, along with her battles against breast cancer and alcoholism,
25:15only served to deepen her compassion for others.
25:20This is for Maxie.
25:22She heard you were in the hospital.
25:24She tells everybody you're the person who saved her life.
25:28She knows you're going to be okay because you're a general hospital.
25:32And it's the best hospital in the whole wide world.
25:34And it has the best doctors and nurses.
25:36And she's right.
25:37You thank Maxie for me, and I will all write her a note.
25:51Monica's generosity, her philanthropy, are two of the biggest reasons that General Hospital,
26:00and even the city of Port Charles itself, are the amazing places that they are today.
26:07I will miss Monica with all of my heart.
26:14But I know that she lives on in her family.
26:18And in her legacy at General Hospital.
26:23What?
26:24Mother, that's your cute.
26:39Are you really not going to say anything about Monica?
26:50For Jim.
26:54Tracy has to speak.
26:56If she doesn't, she's going to regret it for the rest of her life.
26:59I agree, but it's not our call to make.
27:03You know what?
27:04Maybe she just needs someone to buy her a little more time.
27:09Lucy?
27:10Lucy?
27:11Lucy?
27:11Um, good morning, everybody.
27:22Um, I was not asked to speak or scheduled to speak.
27:26Um, why would I be, really?
27:29You know, uh, I am not part of Monica's family.
27:33And, uh, we weren't really friends, per se.
27:37But over the years, we have been called acquaintances, rivals, and, yes, most probably enemies.
27:46But I happen to have a very unique perspective on Monica Quartermain.
27:52And I think you all should know it.
27:56Like Laura, I, too, shared a passion with Monica.
28:11Everyone knows what I shared with Monica.
28:13The Nurses' Ball.
28:17As the founder and organizing the ball from the beginning, I worked very, very closely with Monica.
28:24She was chief of staff, and she was chairman of the board, and I could not have asked for a better partner.
28:32As a doctor, she saw the devastating consequences of AIDS and HIV up close, firsthand.
28:38And it was so wonderful to know that Monica was as every bit devoted to that cause as I am.
28:48And Monica performed at Minnie Balls, which I'm sure you remember.
28:51She was amazing, and she was also so amazingly generous with her time and her money.
28:57And I could not ever have done it without her.
29:01You know, I'm going to really miss having somebody that cared as much about our very special event.
29:10Like me, she cared like I did.
29:14And, of course, we also shared a husband.
29:21The dearly departed Alan.
29:22And I know what you're all thinking.
29:26I can see it on your faces.
29:27This is a bit unorthodox.
29:30The other woman speaking at the memorial.
29:33But, um, Monica believed in facing things head-on, so that's what I'm doing.
29:38Head-on.
29:39We hated each other.
29:41I mean, through the years, because of Alan, we really, really hated each other.
29:47I want you to stop seeing my husband.
29:52Because if you don't, Lucy, I will make sure that the hospital knows exactly what a cheap little tramp they have running the daycares.
30:01Oh, wait a minute, Monica.
30:02What?
30:03You know, you really shouldn't make such high-handed threats.
30:05What's that old saying they say?
30:07You know that old adage, people who live in glass houses?
30:11What exactly are you implying?
30:13And boy, Alan and Monica could fight.
30:17You know, on separate occasions, sometimes they would just leave.
30:21But they always came back because they were the loves of each other's lives.
30:28Always.
30:30So I guess what we can learn from Alan and Monica is that love doesn't look the same to every couple.
30:36But true love, well, we all know it when we see it.
30:40You know, over the years, we did make our peace.
30:46And I'm going to miss her.
30:48And I'm sorry she's gone.
30:50But I'm just so happy to know that she and Alan, they're back together again.
30:58Is no one else going to speak from our family?
31:15Lucy was right.
31:43But Monica loved Alan.
31:48She loved him so much that she took me in when I was a baby.
31:55She chose to be my mother.
31:58And from that moment on, she, she was my mom.
32:05No matter how much I try to distance myself, no matter how much I try to push her away, she,
32:10she let me be my own person and go my own way.
32:16And she just had faith and trust that I would find my way back to her.
32:27And eventually I did.
32:30Jason.
32:31No matter what has been said in anger,
32:34You are my son.
32:41And I love you.
32:43Baby, thank you.
32:47I wasted so much time.
32:48It took me so long to figure out that Monica wasn't trying to make me something I wasn't.
32:57It was that she really
32:58just, just loved who I was.
33:03You know, the same way she, she loved everybody in her family unconditionally.
33:15She told me once that I wouldn't be able to see all the forms love could take
33:22until I had a child of my own.
33:26And she was right.
33:29It wasn't until I had a son
33:32that I realized
33:34what I saw on her face every day
33:39was love.
33:46You know, sometimes it would come out as laughter, sometimes frustration, but behind it,
33:52there was always love.
33:55And it was that kind of love
33:57that made her the best mom
34:01to Emily
34:05and AJ
34:08and to me.
34:11So
34:11speaking for
34:14all her kids,
34:19I just, I just really want to say thank you.
34:22Thank you for being here.
34:45I don't think I said it enough.
34:47But I love you, Mom.
35:00I love you.
35:01I love you.
35:17What are you waiting for?
35:25Tracy, are you sure you don't want it?
35:28The family decided you would be the last one to speak.
35:31Get up there.
35:31People are waiting.
35:32Mother,
35:33everyone will be happy to wait
35:35if you need a minute to collect your thoughts.
35:36I don't.
35:37He's the one that's holding things up.
35:39Okay.
35:52Hi.
35:52Hi.
35:52I'd, uh,
35:54I'd like to thank you all
35:55for coming out today.
35:57That means a lot to me
35:59and my family
36:00to see you all here.
36:03I grew up
36:04hearing stories
36:05about the legendary
36:07Dr. Monica Kortemang.
36:09You know, people,
36:10they,
36:10they talked about what a
36:11brilliant surgeon she was
36:13and how much they respected her.
36:17But to me,
36:18she,
36:18she was just grandma.
36:24It wasn't until later
36:25that I found out
36:26that she was this powerful woman
36:28busy saving lives.
36:32And while I understood that intellectually,
36:34it didn't feel that way.
36:38She always made time
36:39to sit with me
36:41and ask me about my day.
36:43And it didn't matter
36:46if I was
36:47in elementary school
36:49or at an office
36:50at ELQ.
36:52She, uh,
36:53she made the time.
36:56And I had kids of my own.
36:57She made time for them, too.
37:00I consider myself
37:02very,
37:03very lucky
37:04to have gotten to spend
37:07the time that I did
37:08with my grandmother
37:09over these past few years.
37:11And there's some consolation
37:13in knowing that
37:14I should never really be gone.
37:18And not as long
37:19as we remember her.
37:21So I hope
37:22that you all help us
37:23in remembering
37:25and celebrating
37:26the incredible life
37:27that she lived
37:28by joining us
37:30back at
37:30in Monica's house.
37:37So,
37:38unless
37:39there's anyone else
37:41who would like
37:41to say something...
37:42next,
37:44general hospital.
37:56next,
38:09general hospital.
38:10She wasn't just one of us.
38:11Monica was the best of us.
38:13I'll help you remember.
38:14Deal.
38:15If she shows up at the house,
38:16I think that'll say even more.
38:17I will stop
38:18nothing.
38:19Well, don't leave us
38:20in suspense.
38:21Why the hell
38:22are you trespassing?
38:23...
38:24...
38:24...
