Born poolside, raised on vacation, this drink is the sunnier, sassier cousin of the Whisky Sour. Think less smoke-filled bar, more sunscreen-stained lounge chair—and yes, you’ll want two.

00:01What about the light on?
00:02This is a light.
00:03We don't need it.
00:04I think we might.
00:05I don't think we do.
00:06Why do we even have it then?
00:08Because sometimes you need it.
00:11It's not plugged in.
00:15I don't think we need it.
00:18It's perfectly fine.
00:21Bottoms up with LBF and Dave.
00:27By the way, it's sweater weather.
00:29Yeah.
00:30I know.
00:31Look at it.
00:32Sweater weather.
00:33It's nice.
00:34It's essentially inspired by a summer vacation.
00:35Yeah.
00:36But you can drink it anytime.
00:38Okay.
00:39So what are we doing?
00:40Well, I did sweat you.
00:41I think, remember the first time we did this, it was sweltering?
00:44Yes.
00:45You were sweating.
00:46I was.
00:47The air conditioning, we don't even really have it.
00:49It wasn't even working.
00:50Look at us.
00:51I'm wearing a sweater.
00:52I am sweating.
00:53Don't they call this like a, it's too big by the way.
00:55It's not that big.
00:56It's fine.
00:57It's nice.
00:58Don't they call this a fisherman's sweater though?
01:00They do.
01:01And how appropriate.
01:02Oh, yes.
01:03By the way, that wasn't planned.
01:06Anyway, you want to tell the story of this drink we came up with?
01:09Yes, I do.
01:10Because it was inspired by two books, kind of.
01:11Kind of.
01:12So we were on vacation and we were reading, because we don't turn on the TV where we were,
01:17and I was reading a Stephen King book called Polly.
01:20Of course.
01:21And the woman, the character, the very evil character was drinking an iced tea and bourbon.
01:28Iced tea and bourbon.
01:29And I said, Dave, this is a great combo.
01:32And you said.
01:33And I don't, well, I was like, wait, have I even ever heard of that iced tea and bourbon?
01:38And I was like, maybe, like in my mind, like, yeah, sure, maybe I did.
01:42But then I was like, no, but what can we do with that?
01:45Because, and then, then I tried it.
01:47I'm like, iced tea and bourbon together.
01:49Pretty good.
01:50And then how do we make a drink?
01:52What do we do?
01:53What do we do?
01:54What do we do?
01:55So then, the book I was, the book I was reading was the Sebastian Junger book.
02:00Yes.
02:01Which they made, George Clooney made a movie out of.
02:03The Perfect Storm.
02:04The Perfect Storm.
02:05And so, wait.
02:06Which is the most horrible, but you were reading Stephen King?
02:09Exactly, but he says.
02:10This is the most horrifying book you, terrifying, terrifying.
02:13Do you think it's the scariest book I've ever read?
02:15Scariest book I've ever read.
02:16Scariest book I've ever read.
02:17You know the scariest book I've ever read?
02:18What?
02:19The Zone Diet.
02:20So scary.
02:21Zero stars.
02:22Do not recommend.
02:23Basically, this book is like, the sea can swallow you up in an instant.
02:27That's right.
02:28So, when we were trying to decide how to name this, I was thinking like a Stephen King inspiration,
02:38and then Dave, you came up with it.
02:40So, I thought, I just thought of sort of a basic whiskey sour.
02:43Yep.
02:44Right?
02:45Which, a whiskey sour is bourbon, lemon juice, and sugar.
02:48The simple syrup.
02:49Right.
02:50I like to put egg white in there, because it gives a little froth.
02:52Oh, but I'm doing that, right?
02:53Some, no.
02:54Some bartenders are now, now they're using aquafaba.
02:57You know.
02:58That's the, it's the stuff that when you bite chickpeas, and the stuff you pour down the
03:02drain, they use it to whip up.
03:03Because egg white freaks people out for some reason, but I think it's great.
03:07Anyway, so I thought of that sort of basic recipe, and then, and then it's like, just
03:12adding the iced tea and changing the ratios a little bit.
03:15Right.
03:16And we ended up with this kind of great drink.
03:18And what's the name of it?
03:19The, you want to hear the name?
03:20Yes.
03:21The name, and this came, this came, this came from, eventually we're getting to it.
03:26I just really like it.
03:27I just like the name.
03:28This came from the book that I was reading, but it's, we, we decided to call this drink
03:33The Beam Ends.
03:34Now what are the Beam Ends?
03:35The Beam Ends are basically, the Beam Ends on any vessel, on any ship, boat, the, the
03:41widest part of the boat, of the hull.
03:45From the.
03:46So my hips are my Beam Ends.
03:47It's the widest part of my boat.
03:49Anyway, just saying.
03:50It's the, it's the widest, it's the widest front of the width of the boat.
03:57So the hull.
03:58So like if you're, which is why you want, and I'm not a seaman at all.
04:03I just, I just, I just wear a fisherman sweater and occasionally read a book.
04:09Okay.
04:10Can you just say a fisherman next time?
04:13I really don't know anything about boats, but I learned this.
04:16Okay.
04:17All right.
04:19That's good.
04:20Much better.
04:21Just okay.
04:22I learned this.
04:23Like you basically, generally speaking, you want to take waves head on because if you,
04:24if you come alongside a wave and if the, if the wave is taller than your boat is wide,
04:31guess what?
04:32You're going over.
04:33So the, the Beam Ends is when basically you, you're the, the deck becomes, yeah.
04:38No one wants to hear this.
04:42Just make the drink.
04:43Okay.
04:44So we're going to make a drink.
04:45And so what I decided was because we're using the, I made this tea at home.
04:51Yes.
04:52It's a CT Assam.
04:53You know what CT Assam is?
04:55I'm going to find out.
04:56Again, you don't care.
04:57It's just, it's a, it's tea from India.
04:59It's a very strong black tea.
05:03Yeah.
05:04That is a nasty ice tea.
05:05I could even tell you what CTC stands for, but you probably don't care about it.
05:07Go ahead.
05:08Tell me.
05:09Tell me.
05:10It's just the process by which they make the tea.
05:11Oh.
05:12Like crush.
05:13Uh, it stands for something like, like crush, tear, curl, something like that.
05:17Anyway.
05:18Uh, I don't want to bore, I don't want to bore LBF because she's like,
05:22I'm thirsty.
05:23I'm thirsty.
05:24I'm a thirsty girl.
05:25So because it's a very strong black tea, we thought, uh, we thought, well, we, we have
05:30to match power with power and use a very strong, uh, bourbon.
05:35And this is old granddad.
05:37And this is, uh, bottled and bond, which means, you know this now, which means it's a hundred
05:45proof.
05:46So if you ever see something that says bonded bottled, it's an old government term from way
05:49back in the day, but it means that it's, it's 50% alcohol.
05:53It's a hundred proof, which means it's potent.
05:56Okay.
05:57Great.
05:58Pour it in that glass.
05:59Okay.
06:00Let's put it on.
06:01Oh, will you have me my tools?
06:02I need the shaker, honey.
06:03Oh, sorry.
06:04Let's just pump that up.
06:06So we're going to start here.
06:09We're going to do, uh, thank you.
06:12I'll take just this one for now.
06:14Two ounces.
06:15Two ounces.
06:16I know that.
06:17Of the old granddad.
06:18Oh.
06:19Okay.
06:20And don't be fooled.
06:21Old granddad is good bourbon.
06:22Is it a bottom shelf bourbon?
06:23Yeah.
06:24You can find it lower on the shelf, but.
06:25Yeah.
06:26Who cares?
06:27Don't be a snob.
06:28Why not?
06:29Yeah.
06:30We're going to do equal parts.
06:31I love that.
06:32To, uh, oh, I'm breaking my own rule.
06:36Here's the glass we're going to use.
06:37And we're going to use a big cube.
06:40And even before I start to make a drink.
06:43LDF, I think we talked about this in the last one.
06:45We did.
06:46We did.
06:47And I remember.
06:48Put the cube in the glass first.
06:49So that when you pour the drink in, the cube doesn't crack.
06:52Let it sit there for a little while.
06:54It kind of like cools up the glass too.
06:55Let it sit there for a while.
06:56Do you remember where I left off?
06:58Uh oh.
06:59I just had two and two.
07:00No, I know.
07:01And so now we're going to cut a lemon.
07:04And we're going to squeeze some of that.
07:06And we're going to do.
07:07This is a really good tool to get, by the way.
07:08It's very helpful.
07:09We're going to do.
07:10Cooking and drinking.
07:11Uh, just a half ounce of lemon.
07:18And we're going to sort of match that with the simple syrup.
07:21So it's sweet.
07:22It's just sugar.
07:23It's sweet for our southern boys.
07:24Right?
07:25And now, ice.
07:26I got this from my wedding.
07:27This is a 27, almost 28 year old.
07:28Wow.
07:29Ice drink.
07:30And it, now I feel like it drinks in.
07:31You should be shy with the ice.
07:32Nice and cold.
07:33And the reason we're shaking this is because I'll be up nose.
07:35There's a juice in there.
07:36Is that right?
07:37Yeah.
07:38It's a juice.
07:39But you stir drinks that have no citrus.
07:40It's also Lauren's favorite part of the show.
07:42It's one of these days.
07:43It's a go out of your dad.
07:44One of these days.
07:45Look what you can do.
07:46There's a good feel out there.
07:47I'll be up nose.
07:48There's a juice in there.
07:50Is that right?
07:51Yeah.
07:52It's a juice.
07:53We stir drinks that have no citrus.
07:55This is also Lauren's favorite part of the show.
07:58It's one of these days.
08:00One of these days.
08:01Or look, look what you can do.
08:02There's a good feel on there.
08:08And then you give it a good shake.
08:11You want to introduce a lot of water and air to really settle down that lemon juice.
08:16Yeah.
08:17Mix everything nicely together.
08:22And this is a pretty strong drink.
08:25Beam ends.
08:26Yes.
08:27I'm very excited about it.
08:29All right.
08:30What are you doing?
08:31Are you just going to strain it?
08:32I'm going to double strain.
08:33He's very fastidious.
08:35Uh-oh.
08:36Is everyone okay?
08:37Uh-oh.
08:38Wait, my sister's here.
08:39You have to be quiet because we're filming.
08:41You can put that stuff in the fridge.
08:44This is what happens when you leave your front door open.
08:46I know.
08:47Look at that beautiful drink.
08:49Oh, look it.
08:51Oh, gosh.
08:52Now, can I taste it?
08:53Yes.
08:54All right.
08:57Bourbon.
08:59Iced tea.
09:00Oh, that's good enough for breakfast.
09:02Simple syrup.
09:03Lemon.
09:04Shake.
09:05Delicious.
09:06Want to try it?
09:07Yeah.
09:08We have guest stock.
09:09A little over for your sister.
09:11You want to try this drink?
09:12What is it?
09:13This is Julie Beckham, AKA Miss Money.
09:14B-Mens.
09:15I'm not sure you should say that.
09:17It's not like, you know, you're not working.
09:20That's true.
09:21It's a Sunday.
09:22What is this?
09:23It's a B-Mens.
09:24It's a B-Mens.
09:25Okay, just try it.
09:26Bourbon iced tea.
09:27Simple syrup for lemon.
09:28Oh, she tries like a mom.
09:29Yeah.
09:30I do try it like a mom.
09:31Yeah.
09:32I like it.
09:33I do try it like a mom.
09:34Yeah.
09:35Yeah.
09:36Hey, this is officially our first guest star.
09:39Oh, you're my first guest star.
09:40Okay.
09:41All right.
09:42Well, you can take it with us.
09:43One, two, three.
09:44Bottoms up.
09:45One, two, three.
09:46Bottoms up.
09:51It is.
09:52I don't think it is.
09:53It is recording horizontally.
09:55I swear.
09:56He's testing it out.
09:58Oh, yeah.
09:59Maybe it is.
10:00But can we start?
10:01Can we start again?
10:02No, no, no.
10:03Okay.
10:04Why?
10:05What do you want to start?
10:06Nothing?
10:07It's good.
10:08No?
10:09No.
