Hampshire County Council leader Cllr Nick Adams-King explains the preferred option for the major shake-up in local government.
Conservative county council cabinet members have backed the council’s “best option” for local government reorganisation (LGR) to create four unitary authorities: three on the mainland and one for the Isle of Wight.
As a result, East Hampshire District Council, Hart, Rushmoor, Basingstoke and Deane, and Winchester will be together in the north.

00:00I think it's the best proposal that for both Hampshire residents but also most
00:06importantly for the people who we look after who are the most vulnerable of our
00:11neighbours. At the end of the day the County Council provides over 85% of the
00:17services in the County and those services in large part are for those who
00:21need it most and so the consequence of that is that by providing this proposal
00:27which means that we can operate councils at a scale that ensures that the
00:32quality of service continues that they're financially resilient but also that we
00:36have a proposal within it that means people can understand the basis of their
00:40council and how they can still influence things in their local area so yes this is
00:45our best option we hope government takes it seriously doesn't mean those are the
00:50other options are wrong it just means that the good things from those need to
00:55be added to this to come up with the best possible outcome for us all
