RCEP Summit to talk about openness in trade and new members, says Tengku Zafrul

The upcoming Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit in October will deliberate on the inception of new members, the importance of openness in trade and investments, and other issues.  Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said that after the fourth RCEP Ministers’ Meeting at the Asean Economic Ministers (AEM) meeting, it was agreed that all leaders under the trade bloc should meet. 00:00So, today at the RCEP meeting, this is at Galera Economic Minister's level,

00:05we discussed about what is important when the leaders meet,

00:11but first of all, we all agreed that the leaders should meet,

00:14all 15 countries agreed, and we'll be recommending that the RCEP leaders' summit happen,

00:23and we also discussed about what should be discussed by the leaders.

00:27The timing will be during the sideline of the ASEAN Leaders' Summit.

00:33The agenda will be, one, is to talk about the importance of trade and investment

00:42within the 15 economies of RCEP.

00:47Secondly, about how we should continue to be open when it comes to trade and investment,

00:53meaning also open to new aspiring countries to join RCEP.

01:00And finally, to talk about how to operationalise RCEP better,

01:03we're talking about having the dedicated RCEP secretariat to focus on RCEP matters

01:10so that the RCEP can be upgraded.

01:16It's time for review as well.
