00:00There's a time we'll call our own, living free in harmony and majesty.
00:09Take me home, take me home, take me home, take me home, take me home.
00:23A mighty fine thing about the wilderness, it don't belong to no one in particular.
00:29All that space you see between here and yonder is just as wild and free as the day God built it.
00:35In a place as untamed as this, you're likely to meet up with all kinds of critters running loose.
00:41Some got fur, some got feathers, some got hooves and some got claws.
00:47Some got four legs and once in a great while, if you're looking real close, you might even see one with two legs.
00:58On this here day, it was young Robbie Cartman skedaddling up the valley toward Grizzly Adams' place.
01:08Robbie lived over the other side of the ridge with his father, and he had some crazy notion that he wanted to grow up to be a mountain man.
01:17Adam's promised that boy that he would teach him all about surviving in the wilds, and the two of them had become the best of friends.
01:26Ben, what are you up to now?
01:49Ben, why don't you let no chose out?
02:00You know, you're worse than an old mother hen.
02:03Oh, come on, little fella. We can't leave you behind.
02:08Come on.
02:12You're going to have to excuse Ben.
02:14He's just fretting that you're going to get yourself hurt with us all.
02:17Yeah, I reckon he figured you weren't so likely to get yourself in trouble locked up in the cabin.
02:22You just don't remember what it's like being a frisky little cow.
02:24Mr. Adams.
02:38Mr. Adams!
02:39Mr. Adams!
02:41Hi, Robbie!
02:43Hi, Ben.
02:44Morning.
02:46Morning, Robbie.
02:47Morning, Mr. Adams.
02:48Where's your pa?
02:49Pa had to go to town for some supplies.
02:51Since it's such a long trip, he said I could come and stay with Ben and you.
02:55You're telling me you hiked all the way here from your cabin by yourself?
02:58No, sir.
02:59Pa brought me as far as the ridge.
03:01We saw your smoke, so he said I could come the rest of the way all by myself.
03:07But I could have made it the whole way by myself.
03:10I'm getting to be a real mountain man.
03:11Well, so you are.
03:18Why'd you get that cub?
03:20Oh, he's a straight.
03:21He came up on the door a few days back.
03:24I guess he smelled that fish cooking and thought he was going to make himself a new home.
03:28Are you going to keep him?
03:29Well, it wouldn't be right not to try and find his mom.
03:33She's probably worried sick about him.
03:34Where is he?
03:35We were just setting off to find him.
03:37Can I come too?
03:38No, I guess we couldn't very well leave you behind now, can we?
03:41No, sir.
03:42Well, come on.
03:43We'll fix you a pack.
03:44We've got a long way to go.
03:46Gee, thank you, guys.
03:48Yeah.
03:48Yeah.
03:48Yeah.
03:48Yeah.
03:48Yeah.
03:48Yeah.
03:49Yeah.
03:49Yeah.
03:50Yeah.
03:50Yeah.
03:50Yeah.
03:51Come on, Nochus.
03:56Come on.
04:00Let's go.
04:01Hurry up, Nochus.
04:03Don't you want to find your mother?
04:04She's probably right around here somewhere.
04:10Hey.
04:11Mr. Adam, Mr. Adam, where do we look first?
04:18We'll let Ben figure that out.
04:20I'm sure he's got a few ideas where to find it.
04:22Come on, Mr. Adam, where's he going?
04:23Well, I reckon he just caught ten or something.
04:34Probably a honey tree.
04:35He'll be back all covered with honey and at least a couple dozen bee stings on his nose.
04:39Oh, Mr. Adams, Mr. Adams, you reckon we'll ever find that little cub's maw?
04:46Well, it ain't going to be easy.
04:47This is mighty big territory.
04:49Sure is.
04:50Mr. Adams.
04:53Mr. Adams, look.
04:56What is it?
05:00Smoke signal.
05:02You reckon it's trouble?
05:03No.
05:05That's just my brother saying howdy.
05:07Your brother?
05:08He never told me he had a brother.
05:10Why does he stay here so much?
05:12Well, I expect that's just his way.
05:14Tell you what we'll do.
05:15You go get some wood.
05:16We'll light a fire and we'll say howdy back to him.
05:19All right.
05:19Get some nice, dry branches.
05:34What's his name?
05:35Oh, you know Nakoma.
05:38Nakoma?
05:40Nakoma's your brother?
05:44Well, he's like one.
05:47He's my blood brother.
05:48Blood brother?
05:50What's that mean, Mr. Adams?
05:52Well, that means like we're two living things that feel as one.
05:58We aren't actually brothers of the flesh, but brothers in spirit.
06:03Well, it was pretty clear that Robbie didn't quite understand what Adams was trying to say.
06:09I guess I'm going to have to start from the beginning.
06:18When I first came to the wilderness, I was as green as spring grass.
06:24Ah, come on, Mr. Adams.
06:26Not you.
06:27It's true.
06:28I didn't know the first thing about surviving in the wild.
06:31And if it hadn't have been for Ben and the other animals and Nakoma, I don't think I'd be here talking with you today.
06:37When I saw that big old trout swimming lazy in the water, I figured my supper was a singe.
06:50Just watching that trout swim away told me how little I knew about providing for myself.
06:56And for the first time, I realized that I could die out here and nobody'd even know or care.
07:03Boy, I would have been scared.
07:05Well, I was scared and feeling mighty alone.
07:11Most of the time, I didn't know what to expect.
07:14Seemed peaceful enough out in the wilderness.
07:17The danger was always on my mind.
07:20Then I got kind of a surprise.
07:25Hey, little fella.
07:27Like a biscuit?
07:30Well, it was the darndest thing I ever saw.
07:32And that doe just came walking up to me like she'd known me all her life.
07:37Well, all of a sudden, I realized that the wilderness was full of living things and I wasn't alone at all.
07:45Everywhere I went, I started noticing just how many friends I really did have out there.
07:50There were furry critters and there were some that most men would have shied away from.
08:04Well, I seemed to get along with all of them.
08:06Well, we just kind of shared the forest.
08:08I didn't understand that myself.
08:13It was though those animals knew I was a friend and meant them no harm.
08:17And I started feeling like I was part of the wilderness.
08:19Then one day, I came upon a bear cub and it got himself into a real face.
08:29The cub was mighty weak and hungry.
08:31And I didn't get to him none too soon.
08:33I started nursing him back to health with a diet of sweet water and honeycomb.
08:39That cub had a boring instinct for surviving.
08:43No, cub.
08:45Those berries are no good.
08:46Unless I ate them, they'll make you sick.
08:51All right.
08:52Don't say I didn't try and warn you.
08:55But he seemed to know what he was doing.
08:57And after all, he'd been out in the wilds longer than me.
09:00And that's how I learned the difference between saskatoons and corn lilies.
09:19Well, I decided to call that cub Ben.
09:22After Benjamin Franklin.
09:24The smartest man I ever heard tell of.
09:26Seemed fitting since that cub was the smartest bear I ever met.
09:29By following that bear around, I learned about all sorts of food.
09:35There was wild duck, pea vine, Indian turnips, onions.
09:40I found out that a human could eat almost anything a bear does.
09:43Well, I knew that cub couldn't go chasing after me all through the mountains.
09:50So I decided to build a little camp.
09:52Figured we'd stay put for a while, at least until I could figure out what to do next.
09:58While I was busy building my lean-to, Ben was out getting acquainted with the neighbors.
10:02But I think Ben's curiosity started getting him in over his head.
10:07Well, I decided to keep a leash on him so he wouldn't go running off and getting into trouble.
10:12Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:25Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:25Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:27Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:28Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:29Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:30Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:31Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:32Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:33Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:34Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:35Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:36Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:37Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:38Ben's antisocial behavior started getting him in over his head.
10:39Ben, you got every critter in this neck of the woods running for cover every time they see you.
11:04I want you to make friends with them.
11:06This here is Martha Washington.
11:09I want you to say howdy.
11:11Well, say howdy.
11:16Look how nervous you got her.
11:20All right, Miss Washington.
11:22Here you go.
11:27Now, that's more like it.
11:32By this time, Ben and me was getting to be like family to each other.
11:36He come to depend on me, and I can't deny I enjoyed his company.
11:42So we just settle down to make a nice, peaceful life for ourselves.
11:46It's so quiet out in the wilderness.
12:00Comes a time you start hearing every sound there is.
12:03Well, I knew I heard something of them, Miss Ross.
12:11But I didn't have any idea what it could be.
12:14I figured whatever it was, as long as it didn't bother me, I wouldn't bother it.
12:19I was going to be like somebody.
12:20But if I can see.
12:23I don't know.
12:25I don't know.
12:25I don't know.
12:25You guys have a little upset.
12:26But I don't know.
12:28I don't know.
12:28I'll be right.
12:29I'm like, it's like a wedding.
12:29I don't know.
12:31I don't know.
12:31We'll be right there.
12:33I'll be right there.
13:33He had taken a long, hard fall.
13:54And to tell you the truth, I didn't expect to find him still breathing.
13:57The Indian's leg was broken.
14:21And I knew I had to set the bone back in place, but I couldn't do it there.
14:25I had to get him back to my camp.
14:28I built a trevois to carry the Indian.
14:32Being unconscious, the rough traveling didn't seem to bother him.
14:35Well, that night, I set his leg in a spleen.
14:39He seemed to be breathing more regularly.
14:41Didn't seem to be getting any worse.
14:43Well, I felt so helpless.
15:01I didn't know what else to do for the Indian.
15:03I didn't know if he was going to live or die.
15:06All I could do is try and make him comfortable and wait till his fever broke.
15:10Well, I'm not.
15:21I don't know.
15:30I'm your friend friend I'm trying to help you a simmer down
15:59That was crazy that I hurt that leg of yours really bad
16:09All that struggling of his has knocked him out again
16:13So I had to pull him back into the lean-to
16:23I don't mind telling you
16:25From then on I slept with one eye open
16:27Of course he slept with both eyes closed
16:30Morning
16:49It's hard packed
16:56We'll go on and have some
16:59I'll put it down here
17:04He needs to change mine
17:06You broke it
17:22I think I got it set good though
17:25I had to take your knife last night
17:28You were out of your head
17:29And I thought you might hurt somebody
17:31Mainly me
17:33I'll give it back to you though
17:35When you're well enough to leave
17:36You better eat that
17:38It don't taste like much
17:41It'll fill you up
17:42Shoot yourself
17:55Even though my words didn't have no meaning to him
17:58I felt that he understood that he could trust me
18:01So I just went about my life in the forest
18:03I might have meant to him
18:06Hi there little fella
18:09You been having a busy day?
18:11Now let's just sit down and spell
18:23Here you go
18:29You want some of this?
18:32Don't be greedy
18:33Well I reckon I was about the first white man that Indian had ever seen
18:41And I must have looked like a mighty peculiar sight
18:43A man running through the wilds with the bear cub tagging along
18:47Talking to animals like he was humans
18:49If he could have
18:50He'd have got up and ran as far from me as he could get
18:53But that leg of his wasn't about to take him nowhere
18:56Let's see how that leg's doing
19:03The Indian mended slowly
19:07And I knew it was going to take more than hardtack and water
19:10To get him on his feet again
19:11So I set out to see if I could catch him a fish
19:14Trying to grab one of them slickly fellas
19:21They're like
19:21They're trying to latch on to lightning
19:23Well this is something I hadn't counted on
19:31If I could sweet talk that cat out of his supper
19:34It would do that Indian a lot more good than me maybe catching a fish
19:38Morning cat
19:39I see you got yourself some fresh food
19:42Suppose I could talk you out of some of it
19:46It's not for me mind you
19:52It's for a sick friend
19:55Don't get me wrong
20:00I know you're a family man
20:02You got youngs to feed
20:04But if I could just have half
20:06I wouldn't ask you if I didn't need it
20:11Thanks
20:18And I'll pay you back sometime I promise
20:22Ben
20:26Supper's ready
20:27Here
20:42You can use this
20:44It's good for you
20:45You know what the good book says
20:48It says
20:50Pride goes before destruction
20:51And a haughty spirit before a fall
20:53Do you know what that means
20:55It means you're going to die if you ain't willing to take help from them
20:58They're willing to give it
20:59Now take this food and eat it
21:00Yeah
21:03You know I think I missed my calling
21:09I should have been a preacher
21:11Ben
21:13When the storm starts kicking up out in the wilderness
21:30You can expect it's going to be a real hong dinger
21:33Let's get home, Ben
21:44Let's get home, Ben
