Trump says Tylenol use in pregnancy tied to autism

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday (September 22) there was a link between the use of popular over-the-counter pain medication Tylenol and the development of autism during pregnancy, a claim which many doctors dispute.

Trump also suggested leucovorin, a form of folic acid, as a treatment for autism symptoms during a White House event. The Food and Drug Administration published a notice to the Federal Register ahead of his speech, approving a version of the drug made by GSK it had previously withdrawn. The FDA approved the drug for a condition it associated with autism.

00:00So, since 2000, autism rates have surged by much more than 400%.
00:06Instead of attacking those who ask questions, everyone should be grateful for those who
00:11are trying to get the answers to this complex situation.
00:16Administrator of the Centers for Medicine and Medicaid Services, Dr. Mehmed Az.
00:22First, effective immediately, the FDA will be notifying physicians at the use of a set
00:29of, well, let's see how we say that, acetaminophen, acetaminophen, is that okay, which is basically
00:41commonly known as Tylenol during pregnancy can be associated with a very increased risk
00:51of autism.
00:52So, taking Tylenol is not good.
00:59All right?
01:00I'll say it.
01:01It's not good.
01:03And the first day, all of these great doctors behind me were there.
01:07I told them, this is what we got to, we have to find out, because I think you shouldn't
01:11take it.
01:12And you shouldn't take it during the entire pregnancy.
01:14They may tell you that toward the end of the pregnancy, you shouldn't take it during the
01:17entire.
01:18And you shouldn't give the child a Tylenol every time he goes, he's born, and he goes
01:22and has a shot.
01:24You shouldn't give a Tylenol to that child.
01:27The FDA will be updating the label of an existing drug to reflect potential benefits in reducing
01:34some autism symptoms.
01:37This gives hope to the many parents with autistic children that it may be possible to improve
01:42their lives.
01:43This is one of the things that I'm very, very happy about.
01:46This was mostly going to be on how not to have the child affected.
01:52But we've learned some pretty good things about certain elements of genius that can be given
01:59to a baby, and the baby can get better.
02:03Finally, to help reach the ultimate goal of ending the autism fever, the NIH will be announcing
02:0913 major grant awards from the autism data science initiatives.
02:14And to be honest with you, to me, that's the least important.
02:17It's not even a money thing at this point.
02:18There's so much money.
02:20But they have to do.
02:22And they have to move quickly.
02:24When the alternative is that nothing bad can happen, let's do it now.
02:28I was just saying to Bobby and the group, let's do it now.
02:32Nothing bad can happen.
02:33It can only good happen.
02:35But with Tylenol, don't take it.
02:37Don't take it.
02:39I also — and we've already done this — we want no mercury in the vaccine.
02:46We want no aluminum in the vaccine.
02:49The MMR, I think, should be taken separately.
02:51This is based on what I feel, the mumps, measles.
02:58And the three should be taken separately.
03:03And then hepatitis B is sexually transmitted.
03:10There's no reason to give a baby that's almost just born hepatitis B.
03:17So I would say wait till the baby is 12 years old and formed and take hepatitis B.
03:28And they try to take hepatitis B.
