00:00A man arrives in a tribe where his welcome is given in the form of a girl.
00:04In this tribe, there was a tradition that to show hospitality,
00:07they would leave one of their tribal girls with the guest for a few nights.
00:11But when the two end up falling in love while living together,
00:14and they want to get married, the tribe commits a certain crime against them.
00:17Let's see what happens in the story.
00:19The movie opens in the 1930s.
00:21At that time, the British government had introduced a new rule.
00:24If someone wanted a government job, they had to learn a different language.
00:27For this, they would send their people to small villages where they could live and learn the
00:32language so they could later exert control over the tribal population.
00:35Because of this government job requirement,
00:38a man named John is sent to a remote Malaysian village called Sarawak.
00:42The village was extremely underdeveloped,
00:44but it was here that John's life was about to change forever.
00:47John travels there by boat.
00:49Upon arriving, he waits for someone to come pick him up,
00:52and soon he spots a tribesman named Nubanga.
00:54Nubanga knows both the local language and a little bit of English.
00:58Nubanga takes him to the village, where John meets the governor named Henry.
01:02Henry lived there and worked for the British government,
01:05serving as a caretaker for incoming British visitors.
01:07Henry asks John why he chose this place when he had the option to go somewhere else.
01:12John replies that his father had once worked here,
01:15and he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps.
01:18Henry then takes John in a jeep to show him around the village.
01:21John explains that his father had wanted the tribal people to receive a proper education,
01:26but during the war, his father was killed.
01:28Now John has come to fulfill his father's dream no matter what.
01:32Henry didn't know too much about John,
01:34but from their conversation, he understood that John was an educated man.
01:37Driving through the forest, they eventually reach a house deep in the jungle.
01:41Henry tells John that tomorrow they will go meet the villagers so he can explain his plans to them.
01:46He will also need to live among them to learn their language,
01:49so that he can help them in every possible way.
01:52The next day, Nubonga takes John by boat to meet the villagers.
01:55After traveling some distance, Nubonga stops the boat at the edge of the village
01:59and takes him to meet the tribal chief.
02:01There, they welcome John.
02:03All the tribe's people come to meet him.
02:05The chief's name is Malaka, and he is the father of a girl named Belensee.
02:10Then, to welcome their guest, a beautiful woman named Salima comes forward.
02:14She offers John some liquor, but John refuses, saying he doesn't drink.
02:18Nubonga then explains that if he refuses, it will upset the people.
02:22John finally drinks it.
02:23When John looks at Salima, he finds her incredibly beautiful.
02:27John had developed a bit of love at first sight for Salima.
02:30Now, the villagers began their cultural program, where some girls were dancing.
02:34Salima being one of them, John kept looking only at her because he had really taken a liking to her.
02:39After the dance ended, the locals asked John to dance too,
02:42but he felt too shy to dance in front of everyone.
02:45So instead, he recited an English poem, but the people didn't understand it and didn't enjoy it either.
02:50Wanting to make them laugh, John decided to dance with Nubonga, doing a romantic British-style dance with him.
02:56Seeing this, everyone burst out laughing.
02:59When the dance ended, John stepped down and sat among the people.
03:02Later that night, when everyone was going to sleep, John began feeling nauseous and dizzy from drinking.
03:07From a short distance away, he saw a few people carrying a severed head.
03:11This struck him as extremely strange.
03:13The next day, Henry came to John.
03:16John asked him,
03:17What exactly am I supposed to do here?
03:19I have no idea what's going on.
03:21Henry told him,
03:22When the time comes, your work will be explained to you,
03:24but nearby there's a mining operation where some Chinese laborers are working.
03:28They're being treated very badly.
03:30The local tribes are harassing them.
03:32You'll need to stay away from them.
03:33Just then, Salima arrived.
03:35After she left, Henry explained to John that this girl would now stay with him like a wife
03:40and help teach him her language.
03:42He could do whatever he wanted with her.
03:44John was shocked at this statement.
03:45Salima had come with a man who began explaining their traditions to John,
03:49but John couldn't understand their language.
03:51Henry clarified,
03:52Here, whenever a European guest arrives,
03:54the locals gift him a beautiful woman to be his wife during his stay.
03:58John was stunned.
04:00He couldn't understand such a rule.
04:01At first, he thought Salima's people were forcing her to stay with him,
04:05so he spoke to her about it.
04:06But Salima said she had no problem with it.
04:08She wanted to be his wife for as long as he stayed there.
04:11Henry then told him that this custom was called the Sleeping Distinori.
04:15Salima added that her mother was the same way.
04:17Her father was an Englishman, which is why she looked the way she did.
04:21She wanted to stay with John because she wanted to improve her English.
04:24John agreed to let Salima stay with him,
04:26but made it clear he would teach her his language and never be romantic with her.
04:30Henry became angry at this, and even Salima didn't like it.
04:33But in the end, she accepted John's condition.
04:35John and Salima were given an old house to live in.
04:38There was also another man assigned to be John's servant,
04:41who cooked meals for both of them.
04:43That night, while John was having dinner, Salima stood nearby watching him.
04:47It seemed like she wanted him to come to her,
04:49but John explained that she should go and do her work.
04:51He couldn't go to her because that wasn't how things were done in his country.
04:55He told her to sleep in the other room while he went to sleep alone.
04:58Salima stood there waiting for him for a while.
05:01Somehow, their first night together passed like that.
05:03The next day, Nubonga came over and started teasing John.
05:07He handed John a severed monkey's head and said that the previous night there had been a fight
05:11with the Chinese workers, and that he had brought this as a gift for him.
05:15Everyone standing around started laughing because they knew Nubonga was just joking.
05:19But John was startled and disturbed by it.
05:21Salima arrived, grabbed the sack, and threw it away.
05:25John felt humiliated in front of everyone, so he returned home.
05:28There, he saw that his cook had brought a young man with him.
05:31The cook told John that he had brought a beautiful young man for him,
05:34thinking perhaps John would like him.
05:36John became furious and said,
05:38Your heads are filled with dung.
05:40He then told Salima to leave his house.
05:42Salima also got angry and began preparing to go.
05:45But once outside, she stopped and didn't actually leave.
05:49The next day, John stepped outside and found Salima sitting there.
05:52He felt bad and asked her why she hadn't gone back home.
05:55The cook then explained to him that she couldn't.
05:57If she left, the whole village would be angry with her.
06:01John admitted his mistake and told her,
06:03I find you very beautiful, and I like you.
06:05But sleeping together before marriage is a sin.
06:08Salima agreed with his words,
06:10though in her heart she had already fallen in love with him.
06:13That night, Salima once again tried to get close to John.
06:16As they talked, John found himself leaning in toward her,
06:19but instead he simply wished her goodnight and went to sleep.
06:22They lay on the same bed, but at opposite sides.
06:25Salima told him that in their tribe,
06:27it was tradition to treat the guests like a husband,
06:30and that before marriage, he should gain some experience with her.
06:33John laughed and said,
06:35No problem, I'll take that class later.
06:37Then he asked her why she had chosen him.
06:39Salima softly replied,
06:41Because you're a shy kind of man.
06:43They talked for a long time, but still, nothing happened between them.
06:46The next day, John met Henry's wife, Aggie.
06:48Aggie told him that people all around were talking about him,
06:51that there must be something wrong with him,
06:53and that poor Salima was being judged because he wasn't showing her any affection.
06:58But John didn't respond and went home.
07:00As time passed, John started getting closer to Salima.
07:03That night, Salima began teaching John the names of body parts in her language,
07:07and in doing so, she touched him playfully.
07:10Slowly, a strange and warm feeling began to grow between them.
07:13The love that John had suppressed for so long,
07:16finally broke free, and they began kissing.
07:18John had originally come here for a completely different purpose,
07:21but Salima was teaching him how to love.
07:24The next day, the two were sitting with some children, playing,
07:27when Nubonga showed up and jokingly said that Europeans were useless,
07:30and that they were stronger than them.
07:32John replied,
07:33Do you want to challenge me?
07:35You've always lived in the jungle,
07:36but I can stay underwater longer than you can.
07:39Nubonga accepted the challenge,
07:41and the two of them jumped into the water.
07:43Time began.
07:43After one minute, Nubonga came up for air,
07:46but John stayed under.
07:47Finally, John surfaced,
07:49and explained that he had been wearing an oxygen mask,
07:51which was why he could stay underwater so long.
07:54John wanted to show them how advanced Western civilization was.
07:57The villagers were amazed, and everyone cheered.
08:00Salima was especially delighted and proud of him.
08:03Now, John and Salima made love every day.
08:06One night, when John woke up,
08:07he saw Salima getting up to leave.
08:09John asked her why she was leaving at this hour,
08:12and what the reason was.
08:13Salima explained that in their tribe,
08:15if a girl was found sleeping next to a man in the morning,
08:18they were forced to marry.
08:19That's why she always left during the night,
08:21because John didn't want to marry her.
08:23After saying this, Salima walked away.
08:25The next night, Henry invited John over for dinner at his house,
08:28where John met a beautiful woman named Scylla.
08:31Scylla was Henry's daughter,
08:32and had just returned from studying in England.
08:35Scylla didn't like the sleeping dictionary tradition,
08:37and criticized it, saying it was an animal-like rule.
08:40Henry replied that the custom was still practiced there,
08:43but people should see it as just a task.
08:45John, too, was against the sleeping dictionary tradition,
08:48but Henry didn't like his opinion.
08:50Henry told John that he should just mind his own work.
08:53The next day, Salima came to John dressed beautifully,
08:56and they started kissing.
08:57John had truly fallen in love with Salima,
08:59but their love was about to face trouble.
09:02The following day, Scylla came to John
09:04to learn the tribal language and interacted with everyone,
09:07but she preferred staying near John.
09:08They had long conversations,
09:10and watched many village activities together.
09:12When Salima saw this, she became very angry.
09:15She didn't want anyone getting close to John.
09:17Then Scylla asked John to take a photo with her.
09:20Seeing this scene, Salima got even angrier,
09:22and told John in her own language to stop all this.
09:26But John didn't refuse the beautiful woman.
09:28At that moment, they noticed something in the water.
09:31Henry, upon seeing it, became angry,
09:33and said that the Chinese near the mining site were responsible.
09:35John said he would go and check what was going on there.
09:39He and Salima made a plan to go.
09:41Then Henry's wife, Aggie, came to John
09:43and told him that Scylla had started liking him.
09:45She said Scylla was well-educated,
09:47and that if he married her,
09:48they would build a school for him there
09:50so he could educate the local children.
09:52John stayed silent and didn't respond.
09:54Since Scylla was Henry's daughter,
09:56Aggie told him to think about it
09:57and give an answer before it was too late.
10:00John returned home and found Salima furious.
10:02He tried to calm her down,
10:04apologized, and said he was sorry for not refusing Scylla.
10:07Salima replied that all men were the same
10:10and that she had done everything for him,
10:12asking if she wasn't enough to make him happy.
10:14Hearing this, John became angry and left.
10:17The next day, they set out for the site of the earlier incident
10:19to find out what was happening there.
10:21As they approached the village,
10:23they saw that an epidemic had broken out.
10:25People were dying one after another.
10:27It felt very strange to them,
10:29and while they were investigating,
10:31just then, a man attacked John,
10:32but John managed to escape.
10:34Along with Nubonga, he chased the man,
10:37and they eventually reached a place
10:38where they saw many outsiders mining,
10:40extracting silver from the area.
10:42When John returned, he found Salima sick.
10:45He remembered that the last thing Salima had eaten was rice.
10:48Soon, other tribespeople arrived
10:50and were about to attack them,
10:51but Salima explained in her language
10:53that they had come to help.
10:54John told them that the rice they were eating
10:56contained slow poison.
10:58The villagers explained that the rice
10:59had been given to them by the outsiders,
11:01which meant the outsiders were trying to kill the villagers
11:04with poison rice so they could take over their settlement.
11:07John urged the villagers to attack the outsiders.
11:10The tribespeople then launched an assault on the Europeans,
11:13killed them all, and returned to thank John.
11:15They gave John and Salima a bracelet.
11:18For the first time, John told Salima,
11:20I love you, and said he wanted to spend
11:22the rest of his life with her.
11:23Salima, overjoyed, said she wanted the same.
11:26The next morning, John went to Henry
11:28and told him he wanted to live with Salima and marry her.
11:31Henry became furious, saying it went against their culture,
11:34something that had never happened before.
11:35He warned that if people learned about their marriage,
11:38they would kill John.
11:39Henry then revealed that he had also once
11:41had a love story like John's,
11:43but the two of them couldn't stay together.
11:45John told him it was his own fault
11:47for leaving the woman he loved.
11:49At that moment, Aggie arrived
11:50and overheard the conversation.
11:52She began telling John that Salima
11:54was just a sleeping dictionary for him,
11:56and he should forget her and move on.
11:58Henry told John he would return to England,
12:01marry his daughter,
12:02and then come back the next year to live here.
12:04Meanwhile, Salima was speaking with her people,
12:07asking if she could marry John.
12:08The chief told her,
12:10how can you think such a thing?
12:11You will marry my son, Nubonga.
12:13Soon after Salima was thrown into a cell,
12:15John rushed to her and tried to free her.
12:18Salima, heartbroken, told him that she had warned him
12:21no one would ever accept their relationship.
12:23She begged him to leave,
12:24saying she would live her life here,
12:26but John still tried to save her.
12:27Just then, the tribesmen arrived,
12:29with Henry among them.
12:30Henry said,
12:31I'm your superior,
12:32and you have no choice but to obey me.
12:35John, left with no other option,
12:36was forced to leave.
12:37A year passed.
12:38John married Scylla,
12:40and the two began living together.
12:41Scylla asked about Salima,
12:43and John said that she had married Nubonga.
12:45A few months later,
12:46the couple returned to the same village for John's work.
12:49This was where Salima lived,
12:51and where John wanted to educate the children.
12:53A school had now been built there,
12:54and John was very happy to see it.
12:57That night,
12:57while everyone was watching a movie,
12:59John searched for Salima,
13:00his eyes still always looking for her.
13:02At night,
13:03Scylla and John were making love,
13:04but Scylla got lost in her thoughts.
13:07She told John that she would never be able to take Salima's place.
13:10John reassured her,
13:11saying he was trying his best to love her the same way he had loved Salima.
13:15Then Scylla began to say something.
13:17Later, John took the cook to an officer named Neville.
13:20Since the cook would now prepare food for Neville,
13:22John noticed that Neville's sleeping dictionary,
13:25a woman named Dipak,
13:26was injured.
13:27This upset John,
13:28and he told Neville,
13:29I'm your senior,
13:30so treat your sleeping dictionary kindly.
13:32Neville replied that if John hadn't married Scylla,
13:35she would have been his wife by now.
13:37Meanwhile,
13:37Aggie was advising her daughter that if John didn't love her,
13:40she should stop hoping for it.
13:42John overheard this conversation,
13:44and kissed Scylla right in front of Aggie.
13:46The next day,
13:46while working,
13:47John saw Salima.
13:49She had a baby in her arms,
13:50and Nubonga was with her.
13:52But the child had blue eyes and fair skin.
13:54John instantly knew it was his child.
13:57John went to the cook who confirmed it.
13:59The boy was indeed his son named Mandar.
14:01John then made a plan to meet Salima.
14:04He told the cook to tell Dipak that he needed her help to see Salima.
14:08According to the plan,
14:09Salima came to meet John at night.
14:11But when she saw him,
14:12she started to run,
14:13afraid someone might see them together and cause trouble.
14:16John stopped her,
14:17and for the first time,
14:18saw his child up close,
14:19holding him in his arms.
14:21The next day,
14:22John made a toy for his son.
14:24Aggie saw this and became happy,
14:25thinking Scylla was going to be a mother.
14:27But John told her that Scylla was not pregnant.
14:30The following day,
14:31John took the toy to his child.
14:32But Nubonga saw him.
14:34That night,
14:35Nubonga came to John and injured him.
14:37When Henry learned of this,
14:38he ordered his men to kill Nubonga.
14:40Henry also told John not to go near Salima,
14:43revealing that she was his daughter,
14:45and that he had once loved her mother but had moved on.
14:48The next day,
14:49Nubonga was to be punished.
14:51John tried to have him pardoned,
14:53but Nubonga confessed to his crime.
14:55John postponed the decision to the next day.
14:57That night,
14:58Salima came to John,
14:59pleading with him to save Nubonga.
15:01Meanwhile,
15:01Scylla saw John and Salima together.
15:03The next day,
15:04John announced his decision,
15:06sentencing Nubonga to death.
15:07That night,
15:08Salima went to steal the cell keys,
15:10but they were missing.
15:11When she reached the cell,
15:12she saw that John had already freed Nubonga
15:14and given him a gun to escape.
15:16John then once again professed his love to Salima,
15:19saying they should take their child and go far away.
15:22When John returned home,
15:23Scylla told him she was pregnant,
15:24leaving him troubled again.
15:26Elsewhere,
15:26Henry found out Nubonga had escaped.
15:28Neville told the villagers that he wanted Salima
15:30as his sleeping dictionary,
15:32and the villagers agreed.
15:33That night,
15:34Neville tried to romance Salima,
15:36but she and the cook knocked him unconscious.
15:38Meanwhile,
15:39John was writing a letter to Scylla.
15:40Scylla saw the note,
15:42but said nothing.
15:43Salima,
15:43on the other hand,
15:44was waiting for John for a long time,
15:47but he arrived late.
15:48She walked toward the river.
15:49Henry followed her,
15:50intending to stop her,
15:51but he felt pity because Salima was his daughter.
15:54He gave her a gun.
15:55Salima realized Henry was her father,
15:57and the two embraced,
15:58crying together.
15:59Neville then went out looking for John and Salima.
16:02John finally found Salima,
16:03but Neville arrived,
16:04saying he had been waiting for them.
16:06He gave them handcuffs
16:07and began touching Salima.
16:08John attacked Neville,
16:10but Neville overpowered him
16:11and was about to kill him.
16:12When suddenly,
16:13a gunshot rang out.
16:15Salima had fired the shot.
16:16The tribe's people then arrived
16:18and killed Neville.
16:19After this,
16:20John stayed with the villagers.
16:21He and Salima danced together,
16:23marking the end of the story.
