00:00Now that the Zero ZX Legacy Collection review is out of the way, originally this whole segment
00:04was going to be at the end of that review, but it went on a little long, so I decided it would
00:08be best off in its own video, covering a lot of things pertaining to me and the Mega Man franchise,
00:13but most importantly, my infamous review on Mega Man ZX Advent. This was my last Mega Man video
00:20prior to today, and it didn't go over well, as I accused ZX Advent of being a terrible game.
00:26Let's talk about it. Most people claim that I was just tired of Mega Man, which led to the review
00:30being the way it was, which seems to be a common defense given when someone starts to criticize
00:33the formulaic nature of Mega Man, but that's neither here nor there. Was I tired? In my opinion,
00:39the answer is both yes and no. Like I said in the video itself, I played through Mega Man and Base
00:43after finishing Advent to test if my perception was being messed with, and no, I enjoyed the game
00:48just as much as I always have. I literally said this in the video. If I reviewed Zero 3 or X4 that
00:53day, while maybe not as enthusiastic, I would still tell you Zero 3 is an amazing toolbox of
00:58fun powers to wield and kick ass with, and that X4 has really tight level design. I took a long
01:03break from playing Mega Man games at all after that video, which does clue me to the fact that
01:07maybe I was tired of it all, but what I was tired of, well, I'll get back to that in a second.
01:12First, I must apologize. My ZX Advent view was not immune from criticism. I don't think the tired
01:18defense is invalid. What is valid is calling out my information and accuracies. There's just no
01:23excuse for that shit. Especially since, guys, I knew that Gray was the artificial one and that Ash
01:28wasn't, but I didn't care enough to fix it since I wanted to focus on the big picture stuff.
01:33Not acceptable. You can't call yourself credible when making mistakes like that. It's not fair to
01:37the game or the audience, so I apologize for that, and I have since removed that part from the video.
01:42Since many people were expecting me to give ZX Advent the usual treatment I gave other games,
01:46but I just didn't. In fact, there was a part of the script where I was going to explore the
01:50Axel-Model-A connection, but since a lot of people didn't agree with my other theories about Dr.
01:54Weill or Omega, I just cut it. I was going to say that in X7's tutorial dialogue, if you bother to
01:59read it, Axel's copy shot is name-dropped as A-Trans, which is Model A's main ability in ZX Advent.
02:05A-Trans!
02:07But since the story takes it in the Model Albert direction, I cut it out of the script entirely.
02:11I really shouldn't have done that. Once again, if people were expecting a review that would get the
02:16facts right and explore those kinds of details and were greatly let down, I really apologize,
02:20because the flaws that review does have are hard to excuse. For that reason, it's my least favorite
02:24review from that retrospective and probably my worst work from Jay's Reviews Season 5, which spans from
02:29Zero-One to the DCAU epilogue video. But after it was done, I took a stance against making Mega Man
02:35content for a whole year. Why? Well, to explore that requires me to tell you a story, so strap yourselves in.
02:42Five years ago, 2015. After Sly Cooper Thieves in Time was released in 2013, my child self was
02:49taught the lesson that no matter how much you might be looking forward to something, no matter
02:52how greatly in your heart of hearts you believed it was going to go a certain way, it didn't. It
02:57was a complete letdown. I guess you could say I didn't learn the lesson that Sly 2's ending was
03:01trying to teach. But anyway, after that disaster, I decided to try other franchises I'd never played
03:06before. Uncharted, The Legend of Zelda, and later on Metal Gear Solid, Metroid, Ace Attorney,
03:11Devil May Cry, Splinter Cell, and so on. But in 2015, my sole focus was on the Mega Man franchise,
03:17which I wasn't sure of how much I'd like given its challenging reputation. I struggled a lot when
03:21getting into Mega Man X1, getting my ass kicked by Spark Mandrill's stage without the dash because I,
03:26for some reason, thought I had already beaten Chill Penguin, even though I hadn't, don't ask.
03:30But one day, I decided to start the game over and go to Chill Penguin's stage, and as a kid who was a
03:34massive fan of The Completionist at the time, you don't know just how excited I was to beat the first stage
03:40and hear this.
03:46I felt so accomplished, like I was now a fan of a series I had long known of but never played.
04:07I could tackle Sigma and his band of Mavericks standing in front of me, just like the character
04:11Mega Man X. I beat X1, I played X2 through X5. I was a fan of the X series. But then,
04:18I beat Zero 1 and I thought it was a blast. But with my copy of the Mega Man Anniversary Collection,
04:23I played through Mega Man 1. Everyone knows the iconic Mega Man 2 title screen music,
04:27and even I did at the time. But when I beat Dr. Wily for the first time at the end of Mega Man,
04:32I just knew what it meant to me. I had taken my first steps into a larger world. I was not someone
04:56who just liked playing X1 or X4. I was now a fan of Mega Man, who was in it for the long haul.
05:03Through thick and thin, I would play all the games, at least in the Prime Universe,
05:08and that's exactly what I had done. But then, something else happened.
05:12To give context, I would first like you to think back to this line from the X6 review.
05:16When I was playing Mega Man X6 for the first time, I wasn't really having all that great of a time
05:20because of drama in my life at the moment. I was joking around with one of my closest friends at the
05:24time, who I was practically inseparable from beforehand, and said something to him that
05:28really upset him. Instead of telling me about it so I could promptly apologize, he instead decided to
05:33cut me out of his life, talk about me behind my back and pretend I didn't exist and all that other
05:37shit. It was 8th grade and that kind of stuff is common. But this really did a number on me.
05:42I had other friends, some of whom have appeared on the channel before, but being rejected like that,
05:47tossed out in the garbage, it makes you feel like you're worth just about as much.
05:51My aforementioned other best friend was really busy at the time and couldn't hang out that often until
05:55too many games 2015 after the school year ended and we had a blast there. But in the final months
06:00of the school year in 2015, what did I have to turn to? It was Mega Man. If you've ever wondered why I
06:05know so much about Mega Man X3 for example, well, because I would sit in class, stirring over the
06:11possibilities of my newfound favorite franchise. Hmm. You know, it is a needless backtrack to revisit
06:16Spark Mandrill stage for the sub-tank. Why don't I just try to beat Boomer Kuwanger as my 4th stage?
06:22It works! YES! And I figured all this out on my own, too. You could cut out a backtrack to Blizzard
06:27Buffalo stage if you just beat Tunnel Rhino first and use his weapon to get the heart tank. Stuff like
06:32that. I formed a connection with this game that not a lot of people liked or respected. I grew to love
06:36the inquisitive soul that was Mega Man X. Maybe it sounds dumb, but I really related to him, as his fight
06:41for justice came with more pain and solace than Mega Man's. This was something that mattered to
06:46me as I went through all of the X games, the Classic games, the Zero games, the ZX games,
06:49and finally the Legends games once they dropped on PSN. Learning the best strategies for Mega Man
06:54games became my hobby at the ripe age of 14. Abnormal? Yeah, but it was all I felt I had to
07:00turn to back in those days. I have since made up with that friend from earlier and we have a great
07:04connection now, but that's beside the point. At the end of 2015, I began making YouTube content with the
07:09intent to review the Mega Man games one day and LP them right at the start of my LPing career,
07:14but little did I know just how much I would owe to the Mega Man series at the end of the day.
07:18It got me through a really rough patch, the Classic series with me every step of the way during my
07:22YouTube growing pains over on Jay's Let's Plays, but I owe my success on YouTube entirely to the
07:26all-inclusive Mega Man X retrospective. All I was doing was just giving my thoughts on these Mega Man
07:31games to my tiny YouTube audience, but little did I know just how much this would resonate with people
07:36who clearly shared my frustrations with X6 or X7, or my love of X1 or X4. This began the time where
07:42I was so known for Mega Man that nothing else really worked, to the point where Mega Man Zero
07:47videos became a meme on my channel, but it came from the desire of the fans who really wanted to
07:51know what I had to say about these games. It was quite the long journey, but I think it was worth it
07:56in the long run. However, yes, making as many Mega Man videos as I did in 2018 really did lead to a
08:03burnout. I had like over 40 Mega Man videos that year. It was insane. But like I said, I wasn't
08:10tired of playing Mega Man games because the good ones were always that to me. I was tired of two
08:15things. One, the fanboys. And again, I apologize to the average viewer who wanted a much better ZXA
08:22review than the one they got, and I mean it. So don't think that if you're in that camp of people who
08:27are just disappointed, then I'm talking about you. I'm about to discuss the idiots and the assholes.
08:31Ever since X6, one thing that's closely followed me in all my Mega Man activities would be a plethora
08:36of fanboys screeching over how, X6 doesn't have bad design, you just suck. Yeah, that's it, you suck.
08:42Yeah, I suck at Mega Man X6, a game where when you know what to do, it's piss easy, and if you don't,
08:47it's hell. Bosses that can be beaten by standing still and mashing one button. Bosses that have so
08:52much RNG involved that you can be there for up to a minute where the dude doesn't even attack.
08:56What a great game. Yeah, I don't dislike the spike fetish in X8 because it's not my cup of tea,
09:02you just suck. You're just tired or any other bullshit. Again, not talking about people who
09:07disagree, I'm talking about the people who lie about me. The people who say that my biggest
09:11problem with ZX Advent's story is that there's no sequel, which is wrong. I said the story is
09:16boring because it's nothing but exposition for a game that never came, so it's hard to be invested,
09:20when the previous games had done a lot more going for them in the narrative department.
09:24The people who say that I don't like ZX Advent because I'm mad that whales can't walk on land
09:28in real life, which is just crap. I was mad that they designed the form to work in such a specific
09:33scenario when it being usable in other contexts like Model L is greatly preferred. The people who act
09:39like not mentioning an 8-bit minigame or some kind of flaw in the review when I never mentioned all the
09:43other extra content in the Zero games. Oh, well this minigame was a prelude for Inti Creates Making Mega
09:47Man 9. Oh, that explains a lot, I hate both. That not knowing that a random NPC teleporting you back
09:54to base next to the sub-tank refill means that I'm just an idiot. Sorry, I was looking for a
09:58teleporter pad like every other method of transportation in the ZX series, not an NPC
10:04that would magically teleport me from the goodness of its heart. The people who say that my Zero
10:08retrospective was positive until 04 where I felt the need to shit on all games, which is just horse
10:13droppings. I think 04 is better than 01. ZX is probably a better game as well. What I know for
10:20sure was that my ZX review was really not that negative. There was stuff I didn't like, but it
10:24did a lot more right than wrong. The people who say I was mad at ZX Advent for having a two-phase
10:29final boss fight, oh well I guess X1 sucks now. Like what? I've said nothing like that. I said the game has
10:38another gauntlet final stage like X6, X7, and ZX1 where you have to survive a stupid boss rush,
10:44spike brooms, and a two-phase final boss fight in one set of lives. That is the problem. Which leads
10:51me to the other reason I needed to escape from Mega Man for a while. The games themselves. I wasn't
10:56inherently tired of Mega Man. I was tired of Mega Man doing the same mistakes. Time and time again.
11:03X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, X8, 01, 02, 03, 04, ZX, and ZX Advent all have moments of expecting the player to
11:11just take leaps of faith, hoping they don't get screwed over by whatever's waiting for you. I hate
11:16that shit. Why was it asking so much for these tedious boss rushes to be gone? It adds absolutely
11:22nothing to the end game of Mega Man games. It's padding. Oh, I suck at the boss rush? This?
11:33I don't think you are anyway. You're not even waiting for the boss rush. This?
11:39It's the confidence. This? Yeah, it's be it? Come on. I'm having to do it.
11:45I'm having to dance with Mega Man games. I'm having to dance with Mega Man games.
11:51Let's do it. Let's get back. Let's do it. Let's run.
11:56I don't know.
12:26I don't know.
12:56I don't know.
13:26I don't know.
13:56I don't know.
13:58I don't know.
14:00I don't know.
14:02I don't know.
14:04I don't know.
14:06I don't know.
14:08I don't know.
14:10I don't know.
14:12I don't know.
14:14And whenever it's not, we're getting stupid gimmicks like the nightmare system, or X5's colony crashing, or Zero 4's robot parts system, or retry chips, or leveling up the star system.
14:26This is why I needed to step back.
14:28I just had too much of this crap at once.
14:30I need a fresh start with Mega Man.
14:32And that brings us to the present day, February of 2020.
14:38I'm not angry anymore.
14:40I'm not bitter about the Mega Man series.
14:42I have honestly missed talking about a series that has meant so much to me for so many years.
14:47So, with all that off my chest, I just want to say that yes, I'm back.
14:52Mega Man content is returning.
14:54The Legends series will be covered.
14:56The Classic series will be covered.
14:58But the fun doesn't have to stop there.
15:01We will be going back to the X series for plenty of videos, because I'm not done talking about X just yet.
15:06It seems like now is a good time, as it really looks like Mega Man X is going to make a comeback with all the hints dropped in these trailers, and with the amazing X Corrupted fan game still in development.
15:16I'm done resenting Mega Man and the fans, because I let a few bad apples spoil the whole lot.
15:22Because the Mega Man community at large is a devoted bunch of cool people.
15:26The idiots will get my full scorn, but I shouldn't turn my back on a series that I love and adore over that.
15:32Having said that, I think it's time we warped out of here, and got back to work on more game reviews.
15:37Thank you all for watching, and I'll see you next time.
15:54I'll see you next time.
15:56I'll see you next time.
15:58We'll see you next time.
16:00Bye!
16:04Bye!
16:06Bye!
16:08Bye!
16:10Bye!
16:12Bye!
16:14Bye!
16:16Bye!
