00:00Parades where I came from had lost their meaning for me long ago.
00:05Now happening on one in this new land gave me a kind of delight that often seems to fill small children.
00:12The men in dress uniforms, the flags passing on the street set my mind to whirling.
00:19One doesn't have to go too far back in real history to find that in times of trouble,
00:25a flock becomes more than just a piece of cloth.
00:29Before the Russians invaded my homeland of Czechoslovakia, our flag had meant nothing for more than 20 years.
00:37Then, within 48 hours, more Russian troops were on Czechoslovak soil than were Americans in Vietnam at the time.
00:46To fight back, defending its sovereign rights with arms was a useless gesture for such a small country.
00:53There were incidents of sabotage that were put down with bursts of gunfire.
00:59Then at last, the citizens of Czechoslovakia reached for the final resort left to them, a piece of cloth, the national flag.
01:21Passive resistance was called.
01:28And the once neglected flag played a tremendous role for unification of a country kept on its knees for years by a world superpower.
01:43Why is it you must first see your blood soaked into the flag before the meaning of the flag in turn, soaks into you?
01:55Now, here I am in America, seeing all flocks of all lands in a different light, with fresh eyes.
02:09With new eyes, not unlike the eyes of these children.
02:13For, in a sense, both of us, the refugee and the young child, are newcomers to this world.
02:21Even small children can learn to use the animator's camera.
02:30And when they film their drawings, frame by frame, their own liveliness makes the pictures grow before our eyes.
02:40This is George Washington's flag, made by Betsy Ross, and this is George Washington's canyon and his cherry tree.
