00:00Amidst the rush of modern-day Mumbai lies Malabar Hill where hidden behind
00:29tall trees and silence stands a house lost in time.
00:38This wasn't just any residence, it was called South Court.
00:42It was home to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.
00:50Today it lies abandoned, but behind its locked gates lives a story of love, law, legacy and
00:58loss.
01:03This is the story of Jinnah's house in Bombay and how, despite his power and vision, he could
01:09never return to the home he made his own.
01:15Jinnah bought the estate on Mount Pleasant Road, two and a half acres in Bombay's most
01:21prestigious area.
01:27After returning from England in 1936, he spent two lakh rupees renovating it.
01:34He hired Claude Batley, a prominent architect, to redesign the house in a European style.
01:40The house featured six rooms and a wide veranda below, and eight rooms upstairs.
01:51It wasn't just a home, it was a statement, refined, private, grand.
01:59The historic events unfolded here, including the pivotal partition talks between Jinnah and
02:04Gandhi, as well as high stakes meetings with Jawa Halal Nehru.
02:14Even before its renovation, Jinnah had married Rattan Bai in the house in 1918, adding deep personal
02:22meaning.
02:26In May 1947, just months before partition, Jinnah was offered 18 lakh rupees for Southcourt.
02:35He turned it down because it fell short of his 20 lakh rupee asking price.
02:49Today, the property is estimated to be worth over 3 billion rupees.
02:57After the partition, Jinnah left for Pakistan, and Southcourt was declared evacuee property,
03:04meaning it belonged to someone who had migrated to Pakistan.
03:10Nehru wanted Jinnah to retain some claim or benefit from Southcourt.
03:16Shri Prakasa, India's first High Commissioner to Pakistan, wrote that Nehru proposed renting
03:22the house out, with the income going to Jinnah.
03:27To which, Jinnah pleaded, Shri Prakasa, don't break my heart.
03:33Tell Jawa Halal not to break my heart.
03:37I have built it brick by brick.
03:39You do not know how I love Bombay.
03:43I still look forward to going back there.
03:47But he never got to return, as Jinnah passed away in 1948.
03:54Jinnah had written his will in 1939, where he bequeathed the house to his sister, Fatima
04:00Jinnah, writing, I now hereby bequeath to her my house, including all the furniture, plates,
04:09silver, and motor cars, and she can dispose of it as she pleases.
04:17Occupied with political responsibilities, Fatima could only secure a succession certificate
04:23in 1962.
04:25By then, a new law was passed.
04:28Any property belonging to those who migrated to Pakistan or China would be deemed enemy property.
04:38During a session in the Maharashtra Assembly, BJP Minister Prabhat Lodha called for the demolition
04:45of Jinnah House, claiming it was, the place where the conspiracy of partition was hatched.
04:53Pakistan repeatedly sought to turn the house into a consulate, most recently under Musharraf,
05:01but each request was denied.
05:06Jinnah's daughter, Dina Wadia, wasn't mentioned in his will, reportedly due to his disapproval
05:13of her marriage to a Parsi man.
05:17Still, she fought for her rightful claim, even taking the case to court in 2007.
05:25But the judgment held, the sole heir mentioned was Fatima Jinnah.
05:32After Dina's passing in 2017, her son continued the legal battle, but the court declared that
05:39it could go no further.
05:42Jinnah never imagined partition would result in hard borders.
05:47He believed people would eventually settle, coexist, and carry on.
05:53In one interview, cited in the book, Jinnah Pakistan and Islamic Identity, Jinnah said,
06:01Once partition had been decided upon, everyone would know exactly where they were, all troubles
06:07would cease, and they would live happily ever after.
06:13He even recalled one of his old legal cases of two brothers locked in a bitter property
06:18dispute, who, once the court settled the matter, became the closest of friends.
06:23Jinnah hoped partition would do the same, bringing clarity, and eventually peace between India and Pakistan.
06:35And so, South Court remains, not just a house lost to time, but a silent, abandoned relic of a history
06:48that never found its closure.
06:52He was able to execute both for adas in the past.
06:55He had also made a decision to build the whole world.
06:57And so, close to life, Jinnah, could keep going in the past.
07:01He did not go through the whole world.
07:02He knew that he was already alive.
07:02He knew that, he had to use the whole world.
07:03He kept going in the past.
07:04He really wanted his friends to meet the world.
07:05He was also known to the world as a modern painter.
07:07He was also known to the world.
07:09He was a privileged creature and he lived outside the world.
07:11He was also known to his partner in the past.
07:12Oh, oh, oh, oh
07:42Oh, oh, oh, oh
