00:00If there's one person in history who divides opinion like no one else, it's this man, Thomas
00:15Cromwell. As King Henry VIII's right-hand man, he changed Britain forever. Severing contact with
00:24the Pope to make the king head of the church, plundering monasteries and even conspiring
00:31to execute Anne Boleyn. I'm historian Tracey Borman. In this series, I'm exploring the rise
00:40and fall of Thomas Cromwell. He came from nowhere, making enemies of the aristocracy to become
00:48Henry VIII's henchmen. I think it's fair to say I'm pretty much obsessed
00:55with Thomas Cromwell. I have a copy of his portrait in my house. I even named my dog after him.
01:02And that might seem a bit strange because he's gone down in history as this great scheming
01:07villain. But actually, I think a lot of that reputation is down to this painting. He's staring
01:15straight ahead. He looks quite menacing. But I don't think that's the case. I think Cromwell
01:22wanted to be shown where he so often was, at work, on the king's service.
01:28This is Cromwell at the peak of his powers, and it's how he wanted to be seen.
01:34What I really want to do in this series is to find out what made him seek his fortune better
01:41himself. What was it driving him on? Was it just the lure of power, or was there something
01:47else behind it?
01:48To find out, I'm drawing on brand new evidence. How was the information gathered that shows
01:55how Cromwell edited documents to keep favour with the king?
01:58You can really see very clearly the edge here.
02:02And I'll examine how he took back control of the church in England.
02:06The name of the Pope had to be removed.
02:08Oh yes, it's crossed out.
02:09And replaced by Rex Henry.
02:11I'm following in Cromwell's footsteps to investigate his rise and fall, to discover how his brilliance
02:19revolutionised the conventions and norms of the Tudor world.
02:41In Cromwell's footsteps to investigate his rise and violent creativity.
02:47The version was moved back in the beginning.
02:48But I wasaca soprattutto after seeing his work sexually.
02:50A fabric of the Tudor world was connected to civilization rather than most of the Tudor world.
