00:01:49that word, mister? Yeah. You wouldn't say that Jonas, old Jojo, really likes Larry. No, you would say he'd sooner eat one of Larry's eyes out as he would a cherry. Yeah. Well, he certainly chose a fine time to get us up out of that. And me with tickets to the opening game. You'll be there. Larry won't be on time and old Jojo will dynamite the building. Here's the Jojo, the dog-faced boy. Gentlemen, Mr. Jonas breaks the ritual.
00:02:19Raz, Raz, Jojo. In the words of the immortal poet, I observe, thus shines a good deed in a naughty world. What immortal poet? Shakespeare. What paper's he on? He's a fullback on Notre Dame. Larry, you're almost on time. Mr. Doyle, of course you know you're mister today. Well, where's the tin cup? The other fellow looks all right. I didn't catch
00:02:48in the door, and I haven't got a mother-in-law. Jojo will break the other one for you. No, I burned it. Hot gin? No, a furnace. I was turning on a pilot light. It seems there was gas. Wait a minute, wait a minute. Has Jonas gone through with this presentation?
00:03:04Pardon me, gentlemen. One hour late, and he walks right in on the buses. Where is that Doyle? Get him for me!
00:03:22Here I am, Chief. My dear boy, congratulations. This is the secretary to the police commissioner.
00:03:30The new secretary. Uh, uh, congratulations, sir. Sure, and thank you, Mr., uh, the... Whistler. T. Fulton Whistler. Whistler? Whistler. When you are ready, Mr. Doyle.
00:03:48On behalf of the police commissioner, P. Blenheim-Durkin... I thought his name was just plain P. Durkin. Since when did he start parting his name in the middle? Cut it, Doyle.
00:03:55Well, send in the photographer. On behalf of our commissioner, I'm here to thank Mr. Lawrence Doyle for his highly commendable work in solving the recent Duckshaw murder case.
00:04:08I especially extol his zeal, efficiency, repertorial sagacity, and civic spirit. Mr. Doyle, though this is by proxy, the commission and the police department shake your hand.
00:04:18That's not fair. You read it. I thank you very much, Mr. Whistler.
00:04:21No. Whistler. So sorry. That's fine. That's fine. Will, weeks, done. Come in here. Now then, you fellas. Take a look at a real newspaper man.
00:04:36Larry, the paper is proud of you.
00:04:42Hand for me, Chief. That was yesterday. I just got your mask.
00:04:45Fine. Then get this one. Take a shot at Doyle, and then get your check and get out of this office. You're through.
00:04:48Yeah, yes, Chief. Get it. Yes.
00:04:51Wait a minute. Where's the gun?
00:04:54I have found my soul the gift. Where did I put it?
00:04:59Thank you very much.
00:05:02The physical token of the commission is esteemed.
00:05:07All right, Larry. Get the gun up a little higher.
00:05:09All right. Hold it. Get that back as fast as you can.
00:05:12Yes, Chief. Put a rush on it.
00:05:13Yes. What about my job? What's the matter with it?
00:05:15Nothing. I like it.
00:05:16Thanks, Chief.
00:05:17Give me a half column with that cut for tonight's final.
00:05:20Get it?
00:05:21Okay, Chief.
00:05:23Well, what are you waiting for? Get out.
00:05:28Mr. Whistler, do you have to go?
00:05:30Oh, no, no, no, no. I see.
00:05:31Well, we won't forget you in our story.
00:05:33We'll stress the cooperation shown us
00:05:35and the healthy conditions existing between the, uh...
00:05:38Newspaper down and police official down.
00:05:40My best wishes to the inspector.
00:05:41Yes, indeed.
00:05:42Well, I guess the recreation hour is over with.
00:05:44Well, uh, my personal felicitations upon your marvelous work.
00:05:48As a matter of fact, you've been doing so many wonderful things.
00:05:51Oh, thanks. But any of the boys could have done it.
00:05:53I just got the breaks, that's all.
00:05:54Oh, I-I'm not surprised at your modesty.
00:05:57Oh, thank you, Mr. Whistler.
00:06:00Whistler.
00:06:01Well, Chief, I guess I had you all wrong.
00:06:10I thought you were tough.
00:06:12You're not.
00:06:12Who put your ways to that?
00:06:14You.
00:06:14That crack you made about me being a good newspaper man.
00:06:17Just a crack.
00:06:19Oh.
00:06:20You didn't take it seriously.
00:06:22No.
00:06:23Don't.
00:06:24I won't.
00:06:25Fine.
00:06:25You're good when you're good.
00:06:28That's all.
00:06:29This Upshaw case, all right.
00:06:30But what about a couple of others?
00:06:31I brought them in, didn't I?
00:06:32After I wet-nressed you, I'm giving you the breaks.
00:06:34I see.
00:06:35Maybe you should have fired me.
00:06:37Maybe I should have.
00:06:38And maybe I will someday.
00:06:40Meantime, I'm trying to give you a break, Mr. Doyle.
00:06:46The nifty gun.
00:06:48Someday I'm going to use it.
00:06:50That your man picked?
00:06:50Yeah.
00:06:51I'm going to get me a city editor.
00:06:54Wait a minute.
00:06:54No speeches with this.
00:06:59The boss handed me this to hand to you.
00:07:01Don't open it in here.
00:07:03A good story might hop out.
00:07:05And I'd have to get a good man to write it.
00:07:08It's another joke.
00:07:09A bonus.
00:07:11As long as you live,
00:07:13don't ever give any credit to anybody for anything.
00:07:17Might keep your work nights.
00:07:24And I've got the keys to 15 different cities.
00:07:29And I've got the day off.
00:07:30A present from Jojo?
00:07:32No, I've just taken it.
00:07:33Say, let's see that gun.
00:07:37Hmm.
00:07:39Special .45.
00:07:42Well, you might as well be armed right.
00:07:45Here's my contribution.
00:07:46And here's mine.
00:07:54Say, what do you think we could get on this gun?
00:07:57What do you mean, we?
00:07:58Do you think I pawned this token of esteem from T. Whittier-Whiffletree?
00:08:03Well, we always split, don't we?
00:08:05This time we don't have to.
00:08:07The Upshaw case gave us this.
00:08:09Just what is it?
00:08:17I wouldn't be any authority.
00:08:21It says
00:08:22that the government will redeem it for $50.
00:08:34When?
00:08:37Now.
00:08:39Onward, brave musketeers!
00:08:46Dum-dum-da-dum-da-dum-da-dum-da-dum-da-dum-da-dum
00:08:50One dresshopper hopped upon
00:08:53But another dresshopper's back
00:08:57One dresshopper hopped upon
00:09:00And another dresshopper's back
00:09:04They were only playing glee
00:09:08One dresshopper's back
00:09:10Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute
00:09:12I recognize the formula
00:09:15But not the particular soul
00:09:18Well, you have no soul
00:09:20He has no soul
00:09:21My thirst is all right
00:09:24Oh, oh, I'll crush them with it
00:09:25Are my stews here?
00:09:33Who?
00:09:33Men from my paper, the record
00:09:35No, sir
00:09:36Names, Whalen, Weeks, Dunn, and Doyle
00:09:40No, sir
00:09:41I've covered the town
00:09:43They haven't been in here
00:09:44Somebody must have opened a new place today
00:09:47All right, thanks
00:09:48If I had my wife
00:09:52To the old one
00:09:55Quiet
00:09:55Thanks
00:09:55I'm gonna tell that mismanaging editor
00:09:59Just what I think of
00:10:00It's easy to say
00:10:02But it's tough to do
00:10:04Not for me
00:10:05I should've told him today
00:10:07Funny we can always think of the things
00:10:09We should've said
00:10:10Later
00:10:12Diplomacy is the best policy
00:10:15Policy in my neck
00:10:17This is the principle of the thing with me
00:10:19And what is more
00:10:20It's always a mistake
00:10:22To let a newspaper man get hold of $50
00:10:24Oh, listen, Chief
00:10:27I may be old-fashioned
00:10:28But somehow I like to run a newspaper
00:10:31From a newspaper office
00:10:32Maybe I'm wrong
00:10:33You've been wrong from birth
00:10:35To run a newspaper
00:10:36You have to be a newspaper man
00:10:38And you're not
00:10:38No?
00:10:39No
00:10:39You're just no good
00:10:41What do you suggest I do?
00:10:43Resign
00:10:44You three
00:10:45The office
00:10:46Tomorrow morning
00:10:47On time and sober
00:10:48Or a bad newspaper man
00:10:50Will show you how to run one
00:10:51Without you
00:10:51And that goes
00:10:52Okay
00:10:53You get my point?
00:10:55Yes
00:10:55And your resignation
00:10:57And this time, Mr. Doyle
00:10:59That goes
00:11:00You have done me a favor
00:11:01When you want another
00:11:03Call on me
00:11:05And try and get it
00:11:11What's the damage?
00:11:18Everything's paid
00:11:19But the last two rounds
00:11:20Okay, here you are
00:11:21Everything's even
00:11:22Thank you, Mr. Doyle
00:11:24Grab a cab, pick up my bag
00:11:27And I'm on my way
00:11:28Any folks coming with me?
00:11:33Sure
00:11:34Let's go
00:11:35If I have no life to live
00:11:39Hey, hey, hey, hey
00:11:41Don't let me
00:11:42Come here
00:11:42Come here
00:11:43Shh
00:11:43Shh
00:11:44Shh
00:11:44Shh
00:11:45Shh
00:11:46Shh
00:11:47Where are you going?
00:11:48Anywhere this will take me
00:11:51Come on
00:11:52If I have no life to live over
00:11:58Oh, it's time to get up
00:12:14Oh, boss
00:12:16Don't you know
00:12:16It's time to get up
00:12:17Boss, we're getting into St. Louis
00:12:22Yeah, yeah
00:12:23Yeah, okay
00:12:24Huh?

00:12:26Yes, sir
00:12:27St. Louis, Missouri
00:12:28What for?
00:12:29What for what?
00:12:31You mean my ticket to reach St. Louis?
00:12:32Yes, sir
00:12:33Where'd all this junk come from?
00:12:36Well, that come of all dirty
00:12:37Last night in Chicago
00:12:38I see
00:12:39Well, look

00:12:42Oh, no
00:12:43Bridal party was with you
00:12:45I said, bridal party?
00:12:47Surely you remember
00:12:48No
00:12:48I drew a blank
00:12:50Bridal party
00:12:52Well, here we are
00:12:53Yeah
00:12:54We'll have to break a dollar
00:12:56Oh, that's all right, boss
00:12:57You took care of me last night
00:12:59I give up
00:13:00Is the little lady going to meet you?

00:13:03Little lady?
00:13:05Oh, boss
00:13:06You can't fool me
00:13:08I know she was coming to St. Louis to get married

00:13:47A fella can go and get something
00:13:48For, uh, that
00:13:49You mean
00:13:51That?
00:13:52Yeah
00:13:53That
00:13:54Thanks, pal
00:14:14Okay, buddy
00:14:16What'll it be, lady?
00:14:44Oh, uh, a cup of coffee
00:14:47And some donuts
00:14:47And you?
00:14:53Uh, uh, uh
00:14:54Donuts and coffee
00:14:56Check
00:15:04Twenty cents
00:15:08Ten cents for coffee
00:15:11It's never more than a nickel
00:15:13Well, it's ten here
00:15:14And donuts
00:15:16You can get them anyplace for a nickel
00:15:17Lady, we get five cents straight

00:15:22And that's the check
00:15:23Well, look
00:15:24All I have is a nickel and five pennies
00:15:27Honestly, it is
00:15:29Lady, if I let you talk me out of this
00:15:31I'll have to pay the difference
00:15:33Well, don't you believe me?
00:15:35With all the gags they play on me
00:15:37I don't believe nobody
00:15:39Hey, buddy

00:15:55Ha, ha
00:15:55Forget it
00:15:56That won't be necessary
00:15:58I can tell a lady when I see one
00:16:00Oh, thanks
00:16:01Here
00:16:02No, no, no, no
00:16:03This is on the house
00:16:04No, no, no, no
00:16:07No, no, no
00:16:08A
00:16:25That will be 48 cents.
00:16:42I can just meet it.
00:16:44And two cents tax.
00:16:45That's what I say, I can just meet it.
00:16:47Is this name Weston?
00:16:56Yes.
00:17:01That will be 56 cents.
00:17:03I'd like to send a collect.
00:17:05What's your name?
00:17:07Any identification?
00:17:08No, but it's to my mother.
00:17:11I know, Miss, but we don't know your mother.
00:17:13And I can't accept it.
00:17:16You can't?
00:17:21Well, that's all right.
00:17:23Thanks just the same.
00:17:46Hey, girl.
00:17:47They lose this time.
00:18:05Look, isn't there something I can do?
00:18:07No, thank you.
00:18:08Well, now, don't get me wrong.
00:18:10I'm just not interested.
00:18:12That's telling me.
00:18:25Hey, where do you think are going?
00:18:27When you see fellows like that, you wish you were a judge.
00:18:30Anyone hurt?
00:18:31No. No.
00:18:33But how come you let that fellow get away?
00:18:35I whistled, didn't I?
00:18:36Officer, everything is all right.
00:18:38Everything isn't all right.
00:18:39That fellow...
00:18:40That fellow didn't give me an argument.
00:18:41He went right ahead.
00:18:42That's what burns me.
00:18:43Would you and the lady like to go to the station and make a complaint?
00:18:45We certainly would.
00:18:46Well, you need to get...
00:18:47I don't want any trouble.
00:18:48What kind of attorney...
00:18:49Whoa, whoa!
00:18:50Whoa, now!
00:18:51Don't you know that you can never win an argument with a wife?
00:18:58Yeah, but sometimes a good smack does her good.
00:19:06I'll have to carry you across the next street.
00:19:07You might throw yourself under another car.
00:19:08I appreciate very much what you did, but now I wish you'd go away and leave me alone.
00:19:21You can't be trusted out alone.
00:19:22You can tell our traffic officer how to handle his job, but don't give me any of your advice.
00:19:27That was funny that missing stuff, wasn't it?
00:19:29No!
00:19:30I thought it was.
00:19:31Oh, you!
00:19:32You!
00:19:33Do you know you're prettier than ever when you're mad?
00:19:35You'll either go away and leave me alone or I'll call a policeman and tell them that you're annoying me.
00:19:38Would you do that?
00:19:42Yes!
00:19:44I believe you would at that time.
00:19:46Well, so long.
00:19:55Miss me?
00:19:58I love your laugh.
00:20:00Is this going to keep up all day?
00:20:02Why not?
00:20:03I don't know what to do with you.
00:20:05I don't know what to do with you.
00:20:06Come on.
00:20:09You know, you're not fooling me a bit.
00:20:11You haven't any more place to go than a rabbit.
00:20:13Neither have I.
00:20:14You're broke and I'm broke.
00:20:16But I'm not going to let you go until I'm sure you're all right.
00:20:18Oh, don't worry about me.
00:20:19Well, I have to.
00:20:20Ever since that car missed you and you threw yourself in my arms.
00:20:23I did not.
00:20:24Well, look that way to me.
00:20:25Well, you grabbed me.
00:20:26Could I help that?
00:20:27No, I suppose not.
00:20:28But you didn't have to kiss me as a reward for saving your life.
00:20:30What?
00:20:31Well, you didn't think about it.
00:20:32It's okay.
00:20:33It'd be nice if you had, though.
00:20:35But on the level, you are up against it, aren't you?
00:20:39So am I.
00:20:40It's fine.
00:20:43Now, look.
00:20:44If you're willing to take a chance, I can get us both out of a jam.
00:20:48Just what do you mean by taking a chance?
00:20:52Figure there are some men in this world that know a decent girl when they see one.
00:20:56Then forget all those others and focus on me.
00:20:58Now, there you are, and here I am.
00:21:02We have one bag between us.
00:21:05That bag will get us into a good hotel.
00:21:07Now, please, please, don't get me wrong.
00:21:10I'll see that you get a good room, a good meal, good sleep.
00:21:14And incidentally, I'll get a little shut-eye myself.
00:21:17Because I won't have to be worrying about you.
00:21:19What do you say?
00:21:30Well, here comes an officer.
00:21:32Coming along with me, or are you going to turn me in?
00:21:36Nice day, officer.
00:21:37What's nice about it?
00:21:39Well, I think it's a lovely day.
00:21:50Nothing like picking the best, huh?
00:21:52Now, keep smiling, keep on looking happy.
00:21:54And if I start getting in wrong, you laugh.
00:21:56That'll kill the clerk.
00:21:58Whatever I do, you play straight for me.
00:22:00We'll get all set, have something to eat, and tomorrow's another day.
00:22:03You'll trust me, don't you?
00:22:06I trust you.
00:22:08That's great.
00:22:11Come on, turn on that smile.
00:22:14That's it, come on.
00:22:19How do you do?
00:22:20How do you do?
00:22:27Now, I can give you something very nice on the third floor with tub and shower for $10.
00:22:32You're not talking my language.
00:22:34What did the president have last time he stopped here?
00:22:37Perhaps I'd better call the manager.
00:22:39Yes, would you?
00:22:44Play straight, place.
00:22:46Mr. Clark, our manager, Mr. and Mrs. Doyle.
00:22:47Oh, how do you do, Mrs. Doyle?
00:22:50Hello.
00:22:51How do you do, Mr. Doyle?
00:22:52Mr. Clark?
00:22:53Now, what can I do for you?
00:22:54Well, what we really wanted was the honeymoon suite if it's vacant.
00:22:57Oh, honeymooners, eh?
00:22:59Yes, indeed.
00:23:03That's $35 a day, Mr. Doyle.
00:23:05That's all right, that's perfectly all right.
00:23:07Mrs. Doyle insisted upon coming here, and at least I'm starting in right.
00:23:10Whatever Mrs. Doyle wants, I want.
00:23:12Isn't that right, dear?
00:23:13My, that's wonderful.
00:23:15Mr. Shaw, the key's to 910.
00:23:18Boy, front.
00:23:20I'll conduct you to the suite personally.
00:23:21Oh, thank you. Just a moment, Mr. Clark.
00:23:23I'm expecting a very, very important wire.
00:23:26Will you phone over to the railroad station and have them forward it over here, please?
00:23:30Yeah, certainly.
00:23:34Thanks.
00:23:36Now, children, come with me.
00:23:38Listen, Mr. Clark, nice, dear.
00:23:39Yes.
00:23:44These bridegrooms get on my nerves.
00:23:47Maybe when you get one, he won't.
00:23:50Oh, wise guy, huh?
00:24:01Like this?
00:24:02Oh, it's fine.
00:24:03You ought to.
00:24:04The president did.
00:24:05Oh, we do, don't we, dear?
00:24:07She's a little tired. A good kid, but moody.
00:24:10Now, don't you hesitate to ask me for anything you desire.
00:24:15I won't.
00:24:17Goodbye, Mr. Doyle.
00:24:18Goodbye, sir.
00:24:19Goodbye, Mrs. Doyle.
00:24:21Here you are, sir.
00:24:22Oh, yes, here we are.
00:24:24Is there anything else, sir?
00:24:25Hmm? No.
00:24:26Boy.
00:24:27Hurry.
00:24:31Well, did I or did I not put that one over?
00:24:33You did.
00:24:34I told you I would.
00:24:35You told me I could trust you, and I believed you.
00:24:37Oh, kid, this is the way to do it.
00:24:39Make them think we're important people.
00:24:41Well, I prefer nice people.
00:24:42We are.
00:24:43I kept my bargain.
00:24:44I played straight.
00:24:46And now I'll go quietly, and you can explain your wife's going as glibly as you did her coming here.
00:24:52Oh, now, look, kids, you can't do this.
00:24:54I wasn't fooling you.
00:24:55I meant everything I said.
00:24:57I thought you understood.
00:24:59I told you there'd be no...
00:25:01Oh, now, look.
00:25:02There's your room, and there's mine, and here's your key.
00:25:05Boy, you couldn't be as safe anywhere in the world as you are right here.
00:25:25Miss me?
00:25:27Which key is mine?
00:25:37Hello.
00:25:38Is Mr. Clark in the office?
00:25:42Hello, Mr. Clark.
00:25:43Mr. Doyle.
00:25:45Oh, no, no, no.
00:25:46Everything is fine, yes.
00:25:47No, I wanted to order some lunch.
00:25:49Oh, uh, some pheasant, I think.
00:25:51Oh, Mr. Clark, that's too bad.
00:25:56No pheasant, dear.
00:25:58Now, she says grouse, then.
00:25:59Yes, grouse.
00:26:00Uh-huh.
00:26:01And some wine.
00:26:02Oh, I should say two bottles.
00:26:05Oh, it really doesn't matter, Mr. Clark.
00:26:07I'll leave the vintage to you.
00:26:15I don't think I've ever been so hungry in all my life.
00:26:18I got that at the station.
00:26:20You looked all in.
00:26:21I was.
00:26:23Do you know I couldn't even pay my check?
00:26:26No.
00:26:27If it hadn't been for that waiter, I don't know what I'd have done.
00:26:31He trusted me for 20 cents.
00:26:33He did say that fellow's all right.
00:26:35You'd never know it by looking at him.
00:26:37I'm gonna see that he gets that 20 cents.
00:26:39No, I'll take care of that.
00:26:41No, no, no, I'll do it.
00:26:43I'm your business manager.
00:26:45All right.
00:26:46Now, here's the idea.
00:26:48We haven't a thing to worry about.
00:26:49I've wired my old paper for $200.
00:26:51That's the wire sent from the station.
00:26:53That ought to be here tomorrow at the latest.
00:26:55I really ought to get it tonight.
00:26:56Then we pay our bill here and we're all set.
00:26:58How's that, Ann?
00:27:00Say, how'd you know my name was Ann?
00:27:03Did I hit it?
00:27:05Well, what are you...
00:27:07Now, how do you suppose...
00:27:09Oh, I know.
00:27:10You look like an Ann.
00:27:12Well, just what do Ann's look like?
00:27:16Well, just like you.
00:27:20Well, Mr. Clark.
00:27:23Just came in for Mr. Doyle.
00:27:35You know, that millionaire bridegroom up in 910.
00:27:40Can I send it up to him?
00:27:45I'll deliver it myself.
00:27:54Mr. Doyle, eh?
00:27:58Why, it's easy.
00:28:00Of course, Larry Doyle doesn't mean anything to you.
00:28:02But any good newspaper knows me.
00:28:04Now, by tomorrow...
00:28:06There you are.
00:28:07Something happening already.
00:28:10Oh, hello, Mr. Clark.
00:28:11Come right in.
00:28:12It's Mr. Clark here.
00:28:13How do you do, Mr. Clark?
00:28:14Telegram, Mr. Doyle.
00:28:15Oh, thank you.
00:28:16Well, what do you think of that?
00:28:17A wire for us.
00:28:19The telegram was for you.
00:28:21Oh, was it?
00:28:22Oh, I'm sorry.
00:28:23Yeah.
00:28:27Good news?
00:28:29Oh, yes, marvelous.
00:28:31Just a joke.
00:28:32Another comedy wire for the honeymoon couple.
00:28:34I don't know how they ever knew we were stopping here.
00:28:38Could I see you in the hall for just a minute?
00:28:40Huh?
00:28:41Oh, yes, certainly.
00:28:42Excuse us, dear.
00:28:43I want to see you, Mr. Clark.
00:28:45Mr. Clark.
00:28:52That line of talk you gave me was good.
00:28:54I don't know what your game is, and I don't care, but you've involved me.
00:28:59Now, I could put you out, but that won't do me any good.
00:29:04So I'll take a gamble.
00:29:05I'll give you just 24 hours to settle up your bill, or I'll call the police.
00:29:16Oh, thanks very much, Mr. Clark.
00:29:19Goodbye, Mr. Clark.
00:29:23He killed me.
00:29:25What did he want?
00:29:26Oh, just another joke.
00:29:27He wanted me to invest money in a new chain of hotels.
00:29:31What was in that wire?
00:29:33Oh, the wire.
00:29:35Oh, just a gag.
00:29:36It's kind of funny, though, but it's, uh...
00:29:38Well, you know, you can't read it to a girl.
00:29:39It's kind of, uh...
00:29:41You know.
00:29:42Here's a laugh from Larry Doyle, St. Louis.
00:29:58He's flat and in a jam and wires me for 200.
00:30:00What are you going to do?
00:30:01I've done it.
00:30:02I wired him nothing doing good.
00:30:03I don't even know him.
00:30:04But he's in a jam.
00:30:06He didn't yell to me.
00:30:07I'm through with him.
00:30:08I just thought you boys might be interested, that's all.
00:30:16The kid's in a jam.
00:30:21How much money you fellas got?
00:30:33I haven't got any money, but I got an idea.
00:30:36What is it?
00:30:39Oh, babies be hot for me tonight.
00:30:43Can you use them?
00:30:46I made them!
00:30:48Well, come on.
00:30:51Well, the grouse was delicious and I noticed that you enjoyed the wine.
00:30:55What do we do next, Mr. Business Manager?
00:31:00Say, you're not even listening to me.
00:31:02I've got it!
00:31:05I've got it!
00:31:06He always works the same way.
00:31:07He pulls off a job and then calls up the district attorney in the newspapers and laughs at him.
00:31:11He's just pulled his most sensational job and he's laughing at them all right now.
00:31:15Who in the world are you talking about?
00:31:17He ain't a Larry, dear.
00:31:18Read it.
00:31:19Oh, boy, is this up my alley.
00:31:20Here's where I go to work.
00:31:21I'm on my way to the news office.
00:31:23Keep me a break till I get back.
00:31:24Hello.
00:31:29Listen, I just told the district attorney where he stands.
00:31:31Now I'll tell you.
00:31:33You're editing the paper.
00:31:35We're doing everything we can, sir.
00:31:36I've got everybody out covering the case.
00:31:38As usual, he left no clues.
00:31:41You get the eel or I'll get another managing editor.
00:31:46What a piece of luck I am for you.
00:31:48Who are you?
00:31:49Larry Doyle, the best newspaper man on either side of the Rocky.
00:31:51Get out of here.
00:31:52Don't you want to catch the eel?
00:31:53Yeah.
00:31:54All right, you're looking at the original eel catcher.
00:31:57Larry Doyle, the one and only.
00:31:58Why, you know me, Larry Doyle, Chicago record.
00:32:00Oh, I know what you're thinking.
00:32:01You think I'm a lot of...
00:32:02I do.
00:32:03You think I'm a bluff, a fake.
00:32:04Right.
00:32:05All right, I'll prove it to you.
00:32:06I've got my press card right here.
00:32:07Anybody knows me.
00:32:08You're a managing editor.
00:32:09You ought to...
00:32:11Oh, I'm afraid I haven't got it.
00:32:12You see, a bunch of the fellow we, uh,
00:32:14that last night in Chicago.
00:32:16Get out of here or...
00:32:17Well, you'll try and kick me out or you wouldn't do that.
00:32:20You'd kick out the best little newspaper man you ever took a boot at.
00:32:22Besides, you'd lose the boot and the opportunity of your life.
00:32:24I'm not gonna let you do it.
00:32:25I'm gonna call up my boss and be identified.
00:32:27Charges reversed.
00:32:28Certainly.
00:32:30Get Jordan for me.
00:32:31I want to talk to Jonas, Chicago record.
00:32:33I don't care where you've looked.
00:32:34Get him.
00:32:35Why, of course, charges reversed.
00:32:36You, Errol, look in every gin mill, pool hall, dance hall,
00:32:40the river anywhere.
00:32:41And when you find him, tell him to go down to Trocadero
00:32:43and see if he can pick up anything on the eel.
00:32:45Trocadero, huh?
00:32:46Hello.
00:32:47Hello, Jonas.
00:32:48It's Larry Doyle.
00:32:49Yeah, I'm talking to Marvin, St. Louis News.
00:32:52Yeah, big stories popped and I'm telling him I'm the boy to handle it.
00:32:55He doesn't believe I'm Larry Doyle.
00:32:57Can you imagine that?
00:32:59Yeah, will you put him straight?
00:33:00Sure, I'll fix it for you.
00:33:02Put Marvin on.
00:33:03Thanks.
00:33:04There you are.
00:33:05That's my boss.
00:33:06This is Marvin.
00:33:07Give me the lowdown.
00:33:08Give me the lowdown.
00:33:09Sure.
00:33:10He's a fake.
00:33:11Why would you I turn him over to the police?
00:33:14He's lying.
00:33:15Because the real Larry is sitting here in my office right now.
00:33:19Facts.
00:33:20Well, he told you, didn't he?
00:33:21He sure did.
00:33:22That was my boss.
00:33:23Your boss says you're a fake and a liar.
00:33:24The real Larry Doyle is sitting in his office right now.
00:33:25Quit kidding.
00:33:26Why, it must be a real.
00:33:27I'm Larry Doyle honest.
00:33:28Get out of here before you tell me you're dame and run you.
00:33:29And here's one city editor you can't put anything over on.
00:33:31All right.
00:33:32You don't believe I'm Larry Doyle.
00:33:33Well, the next time I come in, I'll have the story.
00:33:34Maybe you'll believe that, Mr. Redditor.
00:33:35The charges on that call were six dollars and sixty cents.
00:34:05All right?
00:34:06Is everything all right?
00:34:07Is everything all right?
00:34:08Listen, I talked to Marvin.
00:34:09The managing editor of the news for about fifteen minutes.
00:34:10Told him I was Larry Doyle.
00:34:11He put me on the payroll.
00:34:12Oh, I'm riding on top of the world again.
00:34:13Oh, I'm so glad, Larry.
00:34:14I'm riding on top of the world again.
00:34:15I'm riding on top of the world again.
00:34:17Larry, come here.
00:34:18Look me straight in the alley.
00:34:19Oh, I'm so glad, Larry.
00:34:21Larry, come come here.
00:34:23See me.
00:34:24Look me straight in the alley.
00:34:25I'll have to see you, Neil.
00:34:26Is anything right?
00:34:27I've got to see you, come here.
00:34:28All right.
00:34:29That's a beautiful one.
00:34:30It's a beautiful one.
00:34:32Everything's got to see you.
00:34:33Let's see.
00:34:34Come here.
00:34:35Hey, you.
00:34:37How's this?
00:34:38Oh, Jimmy.
00:34:39Hey, Larry?
00:34:40How do you know?
00:34:41Hey, Larry.
00:34:42Hey, Larry.
00:34:43Look me straight in the eye.
00:34:45Are you lying to me?
00:34:50Yeah.
00:34:54I lost out.
00:34:56You see, Ann, my old boss let me down.
00:34:58I called him, told him they didn't believe I was Larry Doyle.
00:35:00He said he'd fix it. He did.
00:35:02He told him I was a fake.
00:35:04It's kind of funny.
00:35:05It's a shame.
00:35:07It's just a shame.
00:35:09It's all in the brakes, but I'm not licked yet.
00:35:12I'll show him. And I'll show that Jonas, too.
00:35:16Wait a minute. I'll go.
00:35:18It might be Mr. Clark.
00:35:24Another bar for you, Larry.
00:35:25Yeah, I know. It's from Jonas, and I don't want it.
00:35:31Well, look. Here's 50 dollars.
00:35:33Yeah, sure. What?
00:35:37Well, what does this mean?
00:35:39Sorry couldn't do better.
00:35:41The bones went cold at 50.
00:35:44Regards,
00:35:45Weyland,
00:35:46Queeks,
00:35:46and Dunn.
00:35:48Now, can you imagine pals like that?
00:35:55Hello?
00:35:56Hello?
00:35:58If this hotel can scrape up 50 dollars, get it together, because I'm coming right down.
00:36:01It's always a mistake to let a newspaper man get his hand on 50 dollars. I told you something to break.
00:36:06Well, where are you going?
00:36:08Out to spend my inheritance. Money drives me crazy.
00:36:11What's all this?
00:36:16Larry, they're beautiful.
00:36:17Put those things down, boys.
00:36:18You shouldn't have done it.
00:36:19Rather I hadn't?
00:36:20No.
00:36:21Oh, boy.
00:36:21Thank you, sir.
00:36:22The bill has paid the managers apologizing. We've got two days credit. You're a sweet kid.
00:36:24And we're broke again.
00:36:25That's it. Money. Money.
00:36:27Now, where can we get a hold of some money?
00:36:29I've got it.
00:36:30Ann, do you know where there's a good pawn shop?
00:36:31I should. Everything I own is there.
00:36:32I don't know.
00:36:33I don't know.
00:36:34I don't know.
00:36:35I don't know.
00:36:36You're a good pawn shop.
00:36:37You're a good pawn shop.
00:36:38You're a good pawn shop.
00:36:39Thank you, sir.
00:36:40The bill has paid the managers apologizing. We've got two days credit, you're a sweet kid.
00:36:41And we're broke again.
00:36:42That's it. Money. Money.
00:36:44Now, where can we get a hold of some money?
00:36:45I've got it.
00:36:55Ann, do you know where there's a good pawn shop?
00:36:57I should.
00:36:58Everything I own is there.
00:37:00What time's it closed?
00:37:01Larry!
00:37:12How much do you think they'll give you on them?
00:37:14As little as possible.
00:37:21I do.
00:37:22How much?
00:37:25What do you want?
00:37:2650 bucks.
00:37:2950.
00:37:3040.
00:37:3120.
00:37:32Best I can do.
00:37:33I wouldn't sell it for less than 35.
00:37:34Well, I wouldn't pay more than 25.
00:37:36It's yours.
00:37:3750.
00:37:3750.
00:37:38Sign there.
00:38:02Where's your money?
00:38:05Take it.
00:38:06We're rich again.
00:38:07Come on.
00:38:08Come on.
00:38:20Hello?
00:38:22This is Nate.
00:38:23Yes?
00:38:23I just got a special police 45.
00:38:25Exactly what you're looking for.
00:38:27Thanks.
00:38:27I'll be right down for it.
00:38:29$25.
00:38:30A good gambling place, I'll make it $100.
00:38:32Well, there's a trocadero.
00:38:33I hear they gamble there.
00:38:35Trocadero?
00:38:36Trocadero.
00:38:38That's the place Marvin spoke of.
00:38:39That's where we'll go.
00:38:41Larry, do you think we should?
00:38:43Listen.
00:38:44Where they gamble, they drink.
00:38:45Where they drink, I can gamble.
00:38:47All right.
00:38:48But don't you drink.
00:38:50Certainly not.
00:38:52Maybe one or two.
00:38:53I don't know where this place got a reputation for being a live one.
00:39:14It is dead tonight, but it's all right with me.
00:39:16Good night.
00:39:21Good night.
00:39:21Hmm?
00:39:22Oh.
00:39:34Wait here.
00:39:34I'll get a cab.
00:39:35What's the matter?
00:39:46A story hop right in my lap.
00:39:48Needed back to the hotel and wait for me.
00:40:08Keep this stuff overnight.
00:40:37Meet me tomorrow at 5.30 and be sure and be there.
00:40:44All right, get going.
00:40:53Attention all cars. A holdup at the Trocadero.
00:40:56Two men killed. Bandit got away and opened Turing car.
00:41:00Headed west from the Trocadero. Bring him in.
00:41:03That is all. Bronson.
00:41:07Ah!
00:41:12Huh?
00:41:18Huh?
00:41:31The man in murder car seen turning south on 8th Street.
00:41:41Oh, Larry, are you all right?
00:41:42Lady, lady, have I got a story.
00:41:45Police car 17 reports.
00:41:47Bandit car did not go beyond Elm Avenue on 8th Street.
00:41:50Keep your eyes open.
00:41:52Bronson.
00:41:53What a crazy thing to do, Larry.
00:41:54They might have killed you.
00:41:55But they didn't.
00:41:59Look at that stuff.
00:42:00Boy, with a story like this, I'll make Marvin and the news do back handsprings.
00:42:05You stay here, and this time keep your fingers crossed.
00:42:07I'm going with you.
00:42:08No, you stay here. I'll be right back.
00:42:09You'll do nothing of the sort. You're not going to get away again.
00:42:11Where you go, I go. I'm not going to stay up in this room all by myself.
00:42:13I'm going with you.
00:42:14That's what I say. You're going. Come on.
00:42:21Marvin talking.
00:42:22This is your friend, the eel talking.
00:42:24I knocked over the trocadero.
00:42:26What?
00:42:30See if you can trace that call on the other wire. Hurry, it's the eel.
00:42:37Can't you hurry? Can't you hear me? That was the eel.
00:42:39It won't do you any good because you can't.
00:42:45Hello.
00:42:46Hello.
00:42:47Hello.
00:42:48Hello.
00:42:48How would you like to eel this time?
00:42:51I haven't enough on my hands. You're going into your dance again.
00:42:55And now you've got a partner.
00:42:56Oh, I'm not a dancer.
00:42:58I'm his wife.
00:42:59Don't bring any of your children in here.
00:43:00I'm bringing the greatest story of the year in here, if you've got sense enough to grab it.
00:43:03He's a much better newspaper man than any you've got on this paper.
00:43:06He's out of his mind. Now get out of here, both of you.
00:43:08All right. I'm going over to the dispatch. They'll know a great story when they hear one.
00:43:12And you'll lose your job.
00:43:13Why, a feature story signed by Larry Doyle will bust this town wide open.
00:43:16But you're not Doyle.
00:43:17All right. Supposing I'm not, but I can turn up the eel.
00:43:19Lots of people have fallen down trying to do that.
00:43:21But they haven't seen him. I have.
00:43:23I'd believe anything if I could believe that.
00:43:24I tell you I've seen him. I could pick him out of a hundred men.
00:43:27Prove it.
00:43:27I will, but first I've got to be on the payroll.
00:43:29All right. I'll take a chance.
00:43:31How much?
00:43:32Never mind, Dan.
00:43:33Oh, no. We're not giving things away.
00:43:34All right. All right. A hundred a week.
00:43:36Get the eel and you'll get a bonus.
00:43:38It's a bet.
00:43:39Now, call up the district attorney.
00:43:40Tell him to get his men over to the trocadero.
00:43:42We'll be there before they are.
00:43:43Get me Johnson, the district attorney, right away.
00:43:46If you're kidding me, your wife will take you home in a basket.
00:43:48Get the district attorney and make a reputation for yourself.
00:43:50Come on, Dan.
00:43:51Hello, Johnson. The news.
00:43:53Marvin talking.
00:43:54I've got a hot tip on the eel.
00:43:55One of my best men is on his way down to the trocadero with the dope.
00:43:58This is hot.
00:43:59You will? Right away?
00:44:01Good.
00:44:02His name? Doyle.
00:44:03That's it. Larry Doyle.
00:44:07I hope.
00:44:12Now, this is what we know.
00:44:14Officer O'Brien was killed by the gunman in the car, and the gunman was killed by O'Brien.
00:44:18The bullets found in their respective bodies make a certain of that, right?
00:44:21Right.
00:44:22Now, which officer found the body of Detective Riley?
00:44:24I did.
00:44:25Good.
00:44:26Was the bullet found in the body?
00:44:28Yes. A .45.
00:44:29Good. Now, uh, how did you find it? I mean, uh, which way was it lying?
00:44:35The head that way? The feet this.
00:44:38Now, if the body felt like that, he must have been killed by someone who stood about...
00:44:44Here.
00:44:45Sure.
00:44:45The man in the car.
00:44:46No. The man in the car had a shotgun.
00:44:48Now, just let us suppose that the eel comes out of this door. He has the money. He stops. He hears Riley. He turns and fires and kills him.
00:44:59He steps over to the car. He hands someone in the car the money, and they beat it.
00:45:03Now, let's suppose that just to cover up, the eel starts back into the club. He still has the gun. It's hot. What does he do?
00:45:11He throws it away.
00:45:12Right. He throws it away. Now, where would he throw it?
00:45:19Here it is.
00:45:20Where did I tell you?
00:45:21Give it to me.
00:45:24No doubt about it. It's a .45.
00:45:27I tell you, no matter how clever they are, they always leave a clue.
00:45:31Now, gentlemen, you have the gun, you have the bullet.
00:45:34And the fingerprints.
00:45:36Right. Now, all you have to do is find the owner of the gun, and you've found the murderer and the eel.
00:45:41Come on, men. We have no time to lose.
00:45:49Larry, it's your gun.
00:45:56$26,000 in cash. Me left holding the bag.
00:46:02I find the killer's gun, and it turns out to be my own. What a story. What a spot.
00:46:06All right. We're the only ones that know about the money. And as for the gun, that would have the fingerprints of the killer, not yours.
00:46:13That's right.
00:46:14Larry, there's nothing more we can do about it tonight, is there?
00:46:18There certainly is. We can go down to that pawn shop and find out who got the gun.
00:46:22I've got some clothes for hours. You know that.
00:46:25Oh, that's right, too.
00:46:28Look, you're all tired out. Why don't you go in and get some sleep?
00:46:31Lie down and get your nerves all straightened out.
00:46:34What about you? You're all in yourself.
00:46:35Oh, I'm all right.
00:46:36Well, I guess you're the business manager now.
00:46:41Here.
00:46:46This is one time you need it.
00:46:48Thanks.
00:46:52You know, I nearly died when you told Marvin you were my wife.
00:46:55Nobody can call me a dancer.
00:46:58Yes, do you.
00:47:02You better get some sleep yourself.
00:47:04I will.
00:47:06Hey.
00:47:09You're cute, you know that.
00:47:12Good night.
00:47:25Well, what is it?
00:47:26It's about that eel case.
00:47:28Oh. Sit down.
00:47:30I'm a pawnbroker near that gambling joint where the policemen were killed.
00:47:41Go on.
00:47:42Well, I see by the paper about the gun that killed him.
00:47:46The number and so on.
00:47:47Anyhow, just before the murder, a young fellow come in to sell me that same gun.
00:47:54Well, that is interesting.
00:47:56What happened?
00:47:58I wouldn't buy it.
00:47:59Why not?
00:48:01He ain't got no identification.
00:48:03I get suspicious.
00:48:05Take his number, the gun, and his name.
00:48:08Here it is.
00:48:11Larry Doyle.
00:48:19Yeah.
00:48:24Do you have a girl with him?
00:48:26Sure.
00:48:27Send in Jackson and Kelly right away.
00:48:39There's no doubt about it.
00:48:41We've got a real job on our hands.
00:48:43Right.
00:48:44Come on.
00:48:47Take the money, St.
00:48:48Oh, sure.
00:48:49It's locked in the cabinet.
00:48:50Oh, sure.
00:48:50It's locked in the cabinet.
00:48:50Oh, sure.
00:48:50It's locked in the cabinet.
00:48:52Oh, sure.
00:48:52Oh, sure.
00:48:53It's locked in the cabinet.
00:48:54Oh, sure.
00:48:55Oh, sure.
00:48:56Oh, sure.
00:48:57Larry Doyle?
00:49:02Yes, what is it?
00:49:03The district attorney would like to see you.
00:49:06Okay.
00:49:07I've got to run over to the newspaper office first, and I'll be right over.
00:49:09No.
00:49:11You better come along now.
00:49:14All right, Larry.
00:49:15You run ahead, and I'll wait for you right here.
00:49:17Mm-mm.
00:49:18The district attorney said he'd like to see you, too.
00:49:20You didn't think I was really going to stay here, did you?
00:49:27Hmm.
00:49:31Sit down, please.
00:49:34Won't you sit down, Mrs. Doyle?
00:49:36Well, I'm convinced as I am of your analysis of the crime last night, I would like to make
00:49:46sure of some minor details, which may not seem important to you, but I would like to check
00:49:51up on my deduction.
00:49:53Now, as I remember, your deductions were that Officer O'Brien was killed by the gunman in
00:50:01the car, and that he was killed by O'Brien.
00:50:04Now, the bullets found in the respective bodies make that positively certain.
00:50:10Right?
00:50:11Right.
00:50:12Now, there was one thing you overlooked yesterday, something that we now know.
00:50:20Another man drove that murder car away.
00:50:24Find that man, and you'll find the eel.
00:50:27Well, isn't that a reasonable supposition?
00:50:28I suppose so.
00:50:29Now, now check me if you see me going wrong.
00:50:34But now, Doyle, it isn't possible, is it, that for the sake of a good story, you might
00:50:39be withholding something that could be construed as, well, not as deductions, but as evidence.
00:50:46A good newspaper man never reveals the source of his information.
00:50:49Right.
00:50:50Now, for the sake of my deductions, before you tell us something about your movements yesterday,
00:50:58where were you from 1 to, say, 1.30 a.m.?
00:51:04Why, I was, uh...
00:51:06You interviewed Marvin at 1.20, right?
00:51:09About that.
00:51:10Where had you been just before you interviewed Marvin?
00:51:14I was, uh...
00:51:15You went to the Commodore Hotel at 1 o'clock and left there at 1.05.
00:51:20Now, that we know.
00:51:23Most of this all may seem irrelevant to you, but it has its merits.
00:51:28At least, I think so.
00:51:31Now, where were you between the hours of 9 and 12.20?
00:51:35Oh, we went several places.
00:51:38Happened to drop in at the Trocadero?
00:51:40Yes, what time was this?
00:51:45Oh, cut this out.
00:51:46I'm not...
00:51:47Well, you have charge of the cloakroom, the Trocadero?
00:51:49Yes.
00:51:50Recognize this lady and gentleman?
00:51:52Mm-hmm.
00:51:53When did you see them last?
00:51:54At the Trocadero.
00:51:55I gave this gentleman his hat and coat.
00:51:57Lady with him?
00:51:58Mm-hmm.
00:51:59Gentleman say anything?
00:52:00He remarked to the lady that our joint was a dead one.
00:52:03Lady say anything?
00:52:04She agreed with him.
00:52:06About what time was that?
00:52:07About 12.20.
00:52:09That's all.
00:52:15Boss, the district attorney has Doyle down in his office.
00:52:18All right.
00:52:19He knows how to get out.
00:52:20Not today.
00:52:20The DA's putting the screws on him.
00:52:22What for?
00:52:23Oh, I suppose to grab our story.
00:52:26Oh.
00:52:31Let's see.
00:52:32That holdup occurred about the same time.
00:52:38Suppose it did.
00:52:39Are you accusing me of...
00:52:40Yes, sir.
00:52:40Let's see.
00:52:46Fingerprints on the wheel and those of Mr. Doyle found in the hotel room are the same.
00:52:51That's all.
00:52:51I repeat.
00:52:59Find the man who drove that car and you'll have the eagle.
00:53:04You mean you're charging me with murder?
00:53:06I do.
00:53:07You're going to talk?
00:53:09Go on, Larry.
00:53:09Tell them what happened.
00:53:11All right.
00:53:12All this evidence you have is right.
00:53:14But I only did what any good newspaper man would do in the same spot.
00:53:17We don't even know that you are a newspaper man.
00:53:20But we do know that you are not Larry Doyle.
00:53:26What are you trying to do, Johnson?
00:53:27Run my office.
00:53:28Then lay off my paper.
00:53:30What's the deal, Larry?
00:53:31I'm charged with a trocadero murder.
00:53:33Have you gone insane?
00:53:35No, I'm getting smart.
00:53:37First, who is he?
00:53:38What do you mean, who is he?
00:53:39He's not Larry Doyle.
00:53:40Who said so?
00:53:41You did.
00:53:42You kicked him out once when Chicago said he was a fake.
00:53:46What do you want to do, Larry?
00:53:48Get Chicago.
00:53:49Get Jonas again.
00:53:50That's an idea.
00:53:52Get Jonas, the Chicago record.
00:53:54Quick.
00:53:56And remember, it was your own idea.
00:53:59Get it.
00:54:00You're not thinking very fast today.
00:54:03Cut out the jokes, Johnson.
00:54:04They're not funny.
00:54:05Well, this call will be the...
00:54:09Hello?
00:54:11What do you want?
00:54:12Jonas, the Chicago record?
00:54:14Yeah.
00:54:14This is Johnson, District Attorney of St. Louis.
00:54:16I'm going to tell you.
00:54:17I'm going to tell you.
00:54:18I'm going to tell you.
00:54:19I'm going to tell you.
00:54:20I'm going to tell you.
00:54:21I'm going to tell you.
00:54:22I'm going to tell you.
00:54:23Let me talk to him.
00:54:24Hello, Chief.
00:54:25I'm in a spot.
00:54:26If you fall down, I'm at this time, it's my finish.
00:54:27I've got a great story, but it's backed up on me.
00:54:28My only order is to prove that I'm...
00:54:29Put that District Attorney on.
00:54:30Right.
00:54:31Johnson talking.
00:54:32Hello, Johnson.
00:54:33That's Doyle.
00:54:34Larry Doyle.
00:54:35He's a good boy.
00:54:36And you fellas stop kidding him out there.
00:54:37Well, he says you're him.
00:54:38Thanks, Chief.
00:54:39Now are you satisfied?
00:54:40Well, I'm sure he's Doyle all right.
00:54:41And I'm also sure I'm holding him for murder.
00:54:42Come on.
00:54:43Let me in on this.
00:54:44Well, here it is.
00:54:45Besides all this evidence, Doyle was the driver of the murder car.
00:54:47Part of the story.
00:54:48Are you right, Larry?
00:54:49If you'll stick with me.
00:54:50If you'll stick with me.
00:54:51Well, let me in on this.
00:54:52Well, let me in on this.
00:54:53Well, let me in on this.
00:54:54Well, let me in on this.
00:54:55Well, here it is.
00:54:56Besides all this evidence, Doyle was the driver of the murder car.
00:54:58Part of the story.
00:54:59Are you right, Larry?
00:55:00If you'll stick with me.
00:55:01That's good enough for me.
00:55:02We'll crack this story wide open.
00:55:03Come on, kid.
00:55:04No, no.
00:55:05He's going to stay right here.
00:55:06You'd hold up my paper?
00:55:07Well, I've got to handle my end, too, you know.
00:55:08I'm guaranteeing him.
00:55:09If you give me 24 hours, I'll produce eel.
00:55:10No.
00:55:11No.
00:55:12He's going to stay right here.
00:55:13You'd hold up my paper?
00:55:14Well, I've got to handle my end, too, you know.
00:55:15I'm guaranteeing him.
00:55:16If you give me 24 hours, I'll produce eel.
00:55:17No.
00:55:18You won't take my guarantee.
00:55:19No.
00:55:20I see.
00:55:21Well, maybe I don't pack the wallet.
00:55:22Give me four or six, three, seven, oh.
00:55:23If the managing editor can't talk sense to you, maybe the owner can.
00:55:24Now, wait a minute.
00:55:25Wait a minute.
00:55:26That's all, man.
00:55:27Hello.
00:55:28Hold it a minute.
00:55:29There's no need of calling him in.
00:55:30Oh, yes.
00:55:31He'll tell you things I haven't a heart to.
00:55:32Oh, now, gentlemen.
00:55:33We can be reasonable.
00:55:34Do I get 24 hours for you?
00:55:35No.
00:55:36No.
00:55:37No.
00:55:38No.
00:55:39No.
00:55:40No.
00:55:41No.
00:55:42No.
00:55:43No.
00:55:44No.
00:55:45No.
00:55:46No.
00:55:47Do I get 24 hours for Doyle?
00:55:50I'll play with you.
00:55:51Cancel the call.
00:55:52Now, keep your men out of this.
00:55:54Doyle gets a free hand.
00:55:55Are we set?
00:55:56I guess so.
00:55:57What?
00:55:58Yes.
00:55:59Come on, kids.
00:56:03Larry, what was it that man said to you last night when he handed you the bag?
00:56:06Well, he said, keep this and meet me tomorrow at 5.30.
00:56:09But that doesn't make sense.
00:56:10No.
00:56:11But this does.
00:56:12Let's get to that pawn shop.
00:56:13No cops will stop us this time.
00:56:15Larry, look.
00:56:20There's your 5.30.
00:56:35I'll redeem this.
00:56:46What's the matter?
00:56:47Can't you read your own handwriting?
00:56:48Everything's blurred.
00:56:50Just get me the gun.
00:56:52Jake handles this.
00:56:54Come back in half an hour.
00:56:55Yeah?
00:56:56Do I get the gun or do I come over the counter after you?
00:57:06And don't reach under there.
00:57:08Maybe it's in the safe.
00:57:13I'll see.
00:57:14So will I.
00:57:24Oh, I forgot.
00:57:25Jake's got the combination.
00:57:26Quit stalling.
00:57:27I'm not.
00:57:28No?
00:57:29No, no getting tough.
00:57:30I tell you, I haven't got it.
00:57:31Of course you haven't.
00:57:33I don't remember.
00:57:34Who'd you sell it to?
00:57:35I can't remember.
00:57:36I can't remember.
00:57:41What'd you do with that gun?
00:57:42Come on, tell me.
00:57:43You.
00:57:52He's out.
00:57:55You hear me?
00:57:56Wake up.
00:57:57There's somebody outside.
00:57:58Quick, give me something to get in the way.
00:58:00Open that door.
00:58:11Get that gun.
00:58:24You guard him.
00:58:26I'll get rid of the customer.
00:58:30It's the eel.
00:58:43What can I do for you?
00:58:45Well, I'd like to see something in revolvers.
00:58:49Anything special?
00:58:50Yes.
00:58:52A police special .45.
00:58:56I'm afraid we haven't any of those in stock.
00:58:59Well, the district attorney has.
00:59:02Really?
00:59:03So the papers say.
00:59:06What have you got in bags?
00:59:08Bags?
00:59:09Yes.
00:59:10With money and jewelry in them.
00:59:13Come on.
00:59:14Get wise, Doyle.
00:59:16Maybe the district attorney has that too.
00:59:18Oh, that's just too bad.
00:59:20Get over there.
00:59:24We're going in and call on Nate.
00:59:27I'm giving you another headline story, Doyle.
00:59:32But you won't write it.
00:59:34Nate!
00:59:36Nate!
00:59:40All right, Doyle.
00:59:42I'm giving you three to tell me where that bag is.
00:59:45Where is it?
00:59:47One.
00:59:48Where is it?
00:59:49Two.
00:59:51Where is it?
00:59:53Where is it?
00:59:55Where is it?
00:59:57Where is it?
01:00:19I'm giving you three to one.
01:00:22Good, boy.
01:00:24Good, sir.
01:00:25I'm giving you a couple of questions.
01:00:26I'm giving you two points.
01:00:27The other one is, what is it?
01:00:28Where is it?
01:00:29What?
01:00:30I am giving you three points.
01:00:32I'm giving you two points.
01:00:33I'll give you three points.
01:00:35I'll give you two points.
01:00:37I'll give you three points.
01:00:39You can give you three points.
01:00:40Well, this is Larry Doyle, the one and only.
01:00:55Larry, what's the matter?
01:00:59Well, tell me, what is it?
01:01:03Larry, what's the matter?
01:01:08After all the nice things that have happened, now comes the earthquake.
01:01:13Oh, goodness, Larry, what's happened?
01:01:16Didn't you read it in all the write-ups? They call you Mrs. Doyle.
01:01:20Is that all that's worrying?
01:01:23Is that all?
01:01:26Well, we're not married.
01:01:28So?
01:01:29But don't you understand? Now you'll have to marry me.
01:01:34Wouldn't that be awful?
01:01:37What?
01:01:38What?
01:01:40What?
01:01:42What?
01:01:45What?
