00:00Romania's former presidential front-runner has been charged with plotting to overthrow
00:04the government.
00:06Kalin Georgescu is accused, along with 21 others, plotting violence after last year's
00:12presidential election was cancelled over alleged Russian interference.
00:17According to prosecutors, the group sought to endanger national security and undermine
00:22Romania's constitutional order.
00:25One of the suspects is Horatiu Portra, a mercenary who prosecutors say formed a paramilitary
00:31group after meeting Georgescu last December.
00:35The group allegedly planned to spark clashes and carry out, quote, violent actions of a
00:40subversive nature.
00:43Prosecutors say he is now trying to seek asylum in Russia.
00:47The charges against Georgescu come after Romania's constitutional court annulled the election's
00:52first round in November, citing suspected Russian interference, a claim Moscow has denied.
00:58Georgescu was barred from entering the election's rerun in May, which was ultimately won by pro-EU
01:04candidate Nikur Sadan.
