00:00Things are not looking good for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who is expected to miss at least three months with a toe injury that will require surgery.
00:08So here to break it all down is Cincinnati Bengals on SI reporter and writer James Rapine.
00:13And you are obviously boots on the ground, very close to this organization.
00:18What can you tell us about this injury and how long he could realistically be out for?
00:23There's a real scenario where he could be out for the rest of the season.
00:27And that's the obviously the nightmare scenario for the Bengals and nightmare for fans.
00:32But it is a reality and something that I'm sure over the past 24 hours or so, Joe Burrow and the Bengals have started to come to that realization is that surgery for this turf toe injury happens about 2% of the time.
00:46It's a very rare thing to need surgery. And when you do, it's a tough recovery.
00:50So it would not shock me one bit if Joe Burrow is out for the rest of the 2025 season.
00:55You know, this isn't the first time that Joe has missed time with an injury.
00:59How big of a concern is this in terms of his durability as a player from your perspective?
01:04I think this injury is exactly what he certainly didn't want.
01:09And from the Joe Burrow is injury prone, that storyline.
01:14Well, that's back. And that's going to stay here.
01:16And you look at it. Let's just say he is out for maybe not the whole season, but most of the season.
01:21We were talking about three serious injuries now that you've missed significant time with in six years.
01:28So half the time your season either ends or almost ends due to going under the knife for some honestly weird surgeries.
01:35The wrist was a really weird ligament surgery.
01:37And now with this turf toe, a lot of guys don't have to have surgery.
01:42And so for him to need surgery here, it's unfortunate.
01:44And so, yeah, that injury prone label, I think that's going to follow Joe, whether that's fair or not.
01:49We can debate that all day long, but that's certainly something that's going to pop up.
01:53I do want to look ahead to Jake Browning and obviously help lead the team to a week to win over the Jaguars.
01:58But looking ahead, what do you think this team can look like with him under center?
02:02They're different. They're certainly different.
02:04Their margin for error is different.
02:06Their offensive explosiveness won't be the same.
02:09But can they get by?
02:12They can get by.
02:13And I think that's a blessing.
02:15And also it shows how unfortunate it is that Joe is out for as long as he is.
02:19If he was talking about, you know, four to six weeks being out, well, then you could probably tread water, stay alive, especially since you're 2-0 at the moment.
02:28We're talking about Jake Browning either starting for 11 or more games, maybe the entire season.
02:34That's a tough ask.
02:35So I think they'll be competitive, but they're certainly not the Super Bowl contending type team that they hope to be this season.
