00:00On this day in space. In 1949 the US launched a V2 rocket with a monkey named
00:07Albert the third on board. Albert the third was the third monkey the US
00:10attempted to launch to space. He was also the third space monkey to be killed on
00:15the job. NASA started launching monkeys into space in the 1940s to try and see
00:19what might happen to humans in space. This testing started more than a decade
00:23before any humans were launched up there. The monkeys were all given
00:27anesthetics and covered with sensors and probes that monitored their vitals.
00:30While the other five Alberts that were launched on V2 rockets were all Reese's
00:34monkeys, Albert the third was actually a long-tailed macaque. Albert the third died
00:39when his rocket exploded 10 seconds after launch. The two Alberts who came before
00:43him died differently, first by suffocation and then by a parachute that failed to
00:47deploy before landing. It wasn't until Albert the sixth flew in 1961 that a
00:51monkey survived a test launch. NASA stopped using monkeys for testing in the
00:551980s. And that's what happened on this day in space.
