00:06The Home Secretary will be aware of the recent horrific attack and rape of the Sikh woman in Oldbury, my constituency,
00:12during which racist abuse was reportedly directed at the victim.
00:16The case is being treated as a hate crime and a suspect is now under arrest.
00:20So can the Home Secretary tell me what steps she is taking to support West Midland Police in securing justice in this case
00:27and to addressing the wider concerns of the Sikh and our ethnic minority communities regarding the increase of racism in the public discourse
00:34which can lead to targeted violence and damage to community safety.
00:39Mr Speaker, I thank my honourable friend for his question.
00:43The horror of a sexual assault motivated by race or ethnicity is absolutely appalling.
00:48I'm sure the whole House will join me in condemning such crimes in the strongest possible terms.
00:54On the specifics of this case, it is an ongoing criminal investigation.
00:58It is imperative that we allow the justice system to do its work.
01:01I would urge anyone with any further information about the case to get in touch with West Midlands Police as soon as possible.
01:07And I hope he and the whole House will have heard my comments earlier in the session today
01:12that this government will not stand for any incitement to racial hatred or violence.
01:16and it is imperative and I think incumbent on all members of this House to make sure we all jointly, collectively hold that line.
